Normally they serve a light breakfast on the weekend, as seen in A Little Beacon Blog's Best Brunches Guide, but this special brunch opportunity is a treat. Yum.

Hot Stone Massage and Melt Those Cares Away

With all of the heavy shoveling you aren't doing this year, I know your body is worn out anyway, from getting your taxes ready, last minute Valentine's Day shopping and teacher card writing, and all of the other things during your day that make you tense. Those Howlands...they are always dancing! Every month,, the Howland Cultural Center has a dance event, and this month it is in honor of Valentine's Day on Saturday night at 8pm. Special refreshments will be served, along with chocolates. This night is also Beacon's Second Saturday, so after you see art by walking our Second Saturday Guide, drop into this dance!

Chocolate and Balloons

Sometimes you need to give balloons instead of chocolate or flowers. Maybe your recipient is not eating chocolate at the moment, or is overwhelmed by the scent of flowers. Balloons are the way to go. My secret balloon source is the little shop in the middle of town that is next door to Trendy Tots, the kids consignment shop. If you have never been inside of this little store, I know that you have walked by it several times. The window is nondescript with old flyers on it, but the woman inside is magical and very busy building flower arrangements and blowing up mylar balloons, and even has an air pump for those of you who need a sea of balloons on the floor or taped to walls for decoration. At the time of the publishing of this article, the photo of her storefront is buried in my files, but I will snap the shot and post it here.

A lot of chocolate was consumed for the writing of this Valentine's Day Gift Guide. These chocolate hearts in particular are from Alps Sweets Shop on Beacon's Main Street. The chocolate-covered Oreos below are famously from Gourmetibles.

Work off the Chocolate

http://allsporthealthandfitness.com/bootcamp.html

Maybe you forwent all of the gifts and went straight for dessert, as was recommended here in last year's Valentine's Day post with the seven sources of chocolates at that time. It's best you go to a boot camp or get some endorphin-producing exercise. All Sport's special Buddy Boot Camp is your chance to come with a friend and work out together in what will be a challenging morning, but so worth it in the end. And you can always relax in the hot sauna to sweat it out even more when complete. This is one of several special classes at All Sport that we keep track of here at A Little Beacon Blog.

Downton Abbey Tiaras - Where to Find Them on Beacon's Main Street

Tiaras these days are typically worn by brides. But really, let's be honest, Downton Abbey has inspired an upgrade to the traditional headband for us in current times. This is most pertinent on Sunday nights when watching the final season (weep) of the multi-award-winning show, while drinking a glass of champagne preferably set upon a silver tray (but any old coaster will do). Hot Tip for you: Conveniently on Sundays, Artisan Wine at 180 Main Street offers 15% off of champagne...

The big question is, where can you find a tiara for your nights of watching Downton Abbey? Turns out, there are a handful of tiaras on Beacon's Main Street right now. Seven to be precise. But just like the shrinking aristocratic class, these tiaras are mainly one-of-a-kind in each shop, so hurry in. I walked my way through A Little Beacon Blog's Shopping Guide, and here is what is available right now:

Play, located at 167 Main Street near some of your favorite art galleries and the restaurant The Pandorica, is a trusty option for having just about everything. Currently, they have this heart-shaped, rhinestone-studded tiara for $24. You will need to ask the clerk in the store about where to find the tiara, as the location of this one tiara may move around. Play has recently flipped the front of their store to feature more of their jewelry and less of the mini-stickers and candy.

Two different shops on Main Street recommended I try the After Eden Gallery, located at 453 Main Street, the antique shop on the east end of town located near Brother's Trattoria. Sure enough, this gallery too had one rhinestone-studded tiara for $19, surrounded by a lot of other bling. Shop owner Donna was sure to mention: "Every woman needs a tiara." Indeed!

http://www.lorrainetyne.com

Lorraine Tynne, one of the queens of bridal and bling at many different price-points, was sure to deliver on a tiara. Two, in fact, that could work perfectly with your champagne and remote control. These tiaras (pictured above and below) from their 2016 collection are $125. Do check out the rest of their website for a fabulous selection of designer headpieces.

http://www.lorrainetyne.com

http://www.americangypsyvintage.com/

American Gypsy Vintage, at 263 Main Street next to Audioccult and across the street from Max's on Main, has this leaf-patterned hair accessory that is similar in theme to the one Lady Mary wore to her first wedding. As you can see, this tiara is $5, and it is the only one in the shop.

http://shop.reservoirandwood.com/

Season 2 of Downton Abbey takes place during a pivotal time in the world's history - 1916 - 1922, which included the Battle of the Somme in 1916, the Battle of Amiens and the Armistice in 1918, the Russian Revolution and the Spanish flu epidemic. Tiaras become less important to the family at Downton, but are still worn. The era of the flapper style begins, bringing with it the popularity of a flat tiara. Reservoir and Wood, located at 460 Main Street, had these handcrafted "collar" necklaces from local artist Marisa Lomonaco for $650. One of these could work as a tiara if you secured it with bobby-pins or clips and sat very still.

http://www.echobeacon.com/
Echo had a few headbands for $34, with stretchy bling, similar to what you might find at Anthropologie. The nice thing about these headpieces is that you could wear them to other events too, not just to your dining room table while watching Downton Abbey.

Share with us please, if you are watching Downton Abbey in any one of these tiaras, or one you already had at home! Even if it is your 5-year-old's!

Cheers :)

NOTE: We were unable to check Nella's Bellas on the west end of town, who usually has a delightful selection of bling, or Lady Gray Bridal, in the center of town.

From Our Sleigh To Yours...Last-Minute Gifts Ideas Actually Purchased

Shopping while getting ready to head out of town can be so fun: As you are rapid-fire pulling triggers on choosing gifts for people on your list, you have no time to second-guess the decisions. Here is a rundown of what you can find on Beacon's Main Street for any last-minute gifts you need to dash to the store for:

Wool-felted soap for amazing exfoliation. We tweeted a Reader Request for where to find soaps in Beacon, and Wanderlust Gifts is one place you might find a twist on a traditional soap gift.
Find This In: Wanderlust Gifts (located on the east end, near Ella's Bellas)

A carry-on-friendly cocktail kit for the traveler on your gift list. My selection was the Champagne Cocktail, for a certain niece on my list who is flying all over the country on business.
Find This In: The Pfotoshop (located in the old train depot, formerly Hair Haven)
Editorial Note: The Pfotoshop is a Featured Business in A Little Beacon Blog's Shopping Guide, but this is not a sponsored spot! Pure editorial.

The copper mug that has exploded onto the cocktail and kitchen decor scene - copper mugs for Moscow Mules! I don't even know what a Moscow Mule cocktail is (but the recipe here calls for ginger beer, which you could inquire about at More Good); I am just a sucker for copper accents.
Find This In: Utensil Kitchenware (located on the east end of town, on the big curving bend in the road). I admit, I just cleaned out all of Utensil's copper mug stock, but more inventory will be in soon. One of the Cocktail Kits over at The Pfotoshop is for a Moscow Mule as well. You might even ask Utensil if they have a kit, since they have sugar and spice for just about everything else.

For the voracious reader on your list, Binnacle Books provides Beaconites with nearly instant access to new and used books! The requirement for this gifting mission was to find a book about the Hudson Valley region for a man who is obsessed with learning about the Revolutionary War and the Civil War, and has read just about every book on both subjects. "The Catskills" is a new release and the authors are from the Hudson Valley. Surely, this reader wouldn't have it yet! There are some signed copies still available in the store.
Find This In: Binnacle Books (located near Get Frosted Cupcakery and Subway; read our feature on Binnacle Books here)

For the avid knitter on your list, an easy pack-it-and-go gift is complementary shades of colored yarn. I am not a knitter; in fact, I have been known to verbally slip and call it "yarning," but pair these shades of gray yarn with a pop of red, and you have an instant OSU (Ohio State University)-friendly gift for someone who loves to knit spirit-wear. Many more color combos, already paired and ready for wrapping, are available in the store.
Find This In: Clay Wood & Cotton (located on the west end, near Bank Square Coffee)

"The Goonies" metal lunch box. I have been yearning to buy one of these metal lunch boxes from Play, and finally have a recipient who may appreciate it. This is for a nephew in medical school who may just be tired enough to get hooked on this lunch box as he takes snacks to and from studying.
Find This In: Play (located on the west end of town, across from Hudson Beach Glass)

For two nieces who are very different, yet really got into a sister-spat over last year's gifts: pretty wall art from Play. This year, they can play Tug-Of-War with these laser-cut floral wallets that feature tons of card slots and pockets.
Find This In: Play (located on the west end of town, across from Hudson Beach Glass)

Happy Shopping and Merry Christmas!

Come In! Audioccult for Records, Oddities and Pop Culture

True to their name, Audioccult is a place for records amidst the strange and unusual collectible items, many of which hail from the '80s. Located at 267 Main Street, next to American Gypsy and across from Max's on Main near Key Food, Audioccult is a record shop run by proprietor Sean Congdon that is as much a place to buy and sell records as it is to have a friendly experience buying those records. But records are not all that you will find in Audioccult. True to their mission of making you happy, you will find long-forgotten items from an '80s childhood, like a bright green Glo Worm (since sold), the Rainbow Brite horse, Care Bears, and G.I. Joe.

If you have never heard of the word Audioccult, that is because Sean made it up. "Audioccult is a term that encompasses our three primary passions - records (Audio), the strange, obscure, and not easily defined (Occult), and '80s pop culture (Cult)."

Normally very shy of record stores, not being a record collector or owner of a record player (yet), I challenged myself to go into the store to investigate. What I found was a delightfully playful shopping experience, which is exactly what Sean intended. "We're music and art geeks, not music and art snobs - it is our goal to make everyone feel welcome and respected, and hopefully leave the shop with a smile."

So in order to write this post and arrange these photos for your virtual walk-through of the store for A Little Beacon Blog's "Come In!" series, I unabashedly turned on Belinda Carlisle's Heaven on Earth album, and started typing.

Organized in a way that makes record browsing enjoyable, Audioccult also has a designated spot for new arrivals that just landed in the store. This is a much appreciated section for regular record crate diggers.

Vintage display cases line the wall and are filled with items that would be better for little hands not to touch, but are nice to look at.

Where else can you find a Rainbow Brite horse and original My Little Ponies on Main Street? And these might not even be here when you go into Audioccult, as things change in these white cases frequently.

Cheer Bear the Care Bear and an E.T. card game in the same shelf. Priceless.

Is your comic book collection complete without Starsky & Hutch or Dukes of Hazzard? Thought not.

Take a closer look at this picture...you are looking at collectible cards for Growing Pains and 21 Jump Street. These cards are some of the best sellers in the store.

Fievel. In his Fievel Goes West movie that can now be found in gas stations packaged with the original movie (and is a serious tearjerker), an American Tail. Available to you as a collectible card. Or pick G.I. Joe!

Back to the business of records. You can definitely listen to records while in the store.

If you wanted to take a moment to play Super Mario Brothers, Zelda, or whatever Audioccult has on hand at the moment, you could do so on their original Nintendo machine. Not that Audioccult is a store for gamers to stand around playing video games all day, but they do allow for some playing time.

Audioccult does have an online store that has a few unusual items, like a coffin key. As in the real-world shop, you just never know what you will find in there. Open from Wednesday-Sunday, you can also find Audioccult on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook at @audioccult.

Enjoy your shopping experience! Please take a picture of what you bought and tag A Little Beacon Blog in Instagram! @alittlebeacon.

Come In! Painted Furniture at HudsonGold Pop-Up Shop in Zora Dora's

Enthusiasts of reclaimed and painted furniture are rejoicing to find HudsonGold open for the holidays in Zora Dora's space on the west end of Main Street, which has become well-known for housing temporary pop-up shops during the winter season.
Painted mason jars hold roses on top of custom fabric.

Recognize the book on the table? It is one of many from Annie Sloan Home, who shares her techniques for painting furniture and even fabric.
Proprietress Laura Klehr Keyes is a furniture painter and an expert with the much-adored line of paint from Annie Sloan Home. If your heart just went pitter patter, then just wait, it gets better. If Laura finds a permanent storefront in Beacon, and if she becomes an official carrier of the line, then she intends to hold furniture-painting classes in brush, wax, sanding and painting techniques. And sell the paint! I know!!

You will find many goodies in Hudson Gold to to make for a pretty home.
Finding gifts for others is easy in Hudson Gold, as the purchases come in crafty packaging. Pick a mason jar, the raised letters of which have been sanded off, painted in a variety of colors, letting a votive candle's light shine through. For $5 each, it is an easy purchase.

Need something quick with big impact for a sister-in-law? Hudson Gold carries products from other brands, like a line of Hudson Apothecary diffusers from Fifth & Madison in lavender, linen or spa water that include the jar and scented sticks. As for the furniture, the finished pieces don't last long in the store. The light blue, heavily sanded table pictured here was gone just a week after this photo was taken.

Open hours are limited and include Saturdays and Sundays, with a "sometimes" Friday and a random day maybe during the week. In other words, if you see the lights on as you're driving by, pull over and stop in.

Their lights will be on and the store open with a special drink for December's Second Saturday.

Hudson Gold is located at 201 Main Street, in what is normally Zora Dora's in the summer.

This article is part of A Little Beacon Blog's "Come In!" series which showcases the inside of shops, stores and businesses you may have been curious about but hadn't stopped into yet.

Swapping Yarn for Wood at Clay Wood & Cotton

Clay Wood & Cotton, at 133 Main Street (on the west end near the train), was one of the first boutiques to carry handmade items in Beacon this decade, and they are getting their hands dirty this week by moving things around to make way for a new home of makers: The Hudson Valley Maker and Artisan Cooperative (HVMAC), a collective of makers and artisans working toward a shared future. HVMAC can only be satisfied when they find discarded or forgotten objects and rebuild them into pieces of beauty, most of which can be used in your home, yard, shed, wherever. The Hudson Valley Maker and Artisan Coop's new shared storefront in Clay Wood & Cotton is just the right fit!

Clay Wood & Cotton owner Kristy Carpenter is shaking up things in her space, half of which used to house shelves and shelves of yarn and knitting supplies, and the other half for silk-screened items, hand-crafted jewelry, pottery, and at one point even fabric. Her shop was known for carrying some of the hardest-to-find yarn around. Despite the selection and loyal following of knitters, many purchases were made at big box stores, which is great for the independent yarn makers who have wholesale accounts with big box stores, but not enough for this little store on Main Street. Here's the good news: Small businesses can make change! And that is what Kristy has done.

So - Hudson Valley knitters and crocheters, you're in luck - most of the yarn is 30% off right now. This is your chance to stock up, all you yarn enthusiasts! Hurry in, because Kristy is itching to yarn up new hats, scarves and gloves for the store just in time for winter! Kristy is also quite talented at using yarn for just about everything, like window displays and to organize and display jewelry, so get this yarn before she unravels all of it!

Keep your eye on the shop for its own transformation and selection of pottery, stationery, earrings, and more.

Beacon Reads Bookstore Makes Magic Happen for Howland Public Library

Beacon Reads Bookstore, Friends of the Howland Public Library

Quietly tucked away next to the Howland Public Library is Beacon Reads, a bookstore managed by Friends of the Howland Public Library. For a long time, it has been Beacon's only bookstore (and now has a new neighbor). Beacon Reads is a bookstore that you may have browsed through primarily on the sidewalk, where they put free books out on their rolling cart. But inside are a wealth of books of all kinds, from cookbooks, to finance books, to graphic design books, and many more.

What's more, however, are the contributions that Beacon Reads bookstore makes to the Howland Public Library, by way of Friends of the Howland Public Library. The bookstore exists to fund the library, and their efforts have yielded new public computers for the library by matching funds from the Gates Foundation. Beacon Reads is also a big supporter of the Beacon Bees in the Battle of the Books event, a regional teen literature competition in which Beacon has been very successful, taking first place in 2015, and third place in 2012! Friends of the Howland Public Library pays for the bus to the main regional event, which has been held all over the Hudson Valley, including in Carmel and Hudson. And that's not all: Friends of the Howland Public Library raises funds for the physical state of the library, too. Their accomplishments include matching construction grant funds to improve the library facade, and ongoing work to complete that project. (One famous friend of the library especially liked the whimsical mural: Tyra Banks gave it a shout out on Twitter!)

Best yet? Beacon Reads is open 7 days! Except when they aren't, if a personal matter comes up for the volunteer staff. Stop by on dry days, and you can take a goofy picture as a wise old owl!

Binnacle Books - A New Bookstore on Main Street!

Binnacle Books on Main Street, Beacon NY
In what used to be a hair salon, the three owners of Beacon's newest bookshop, Binnacle Books, did more sweeping of finished haircuts than they ever thought possible in order to clean up for the grand opening of Binnacle Books during November's Second Saturday. And it was a good thing too, because Second Saturday on a sunny November day drew a plethora of bookworms to investigate the new bookstore.

Save Me The Waltz, by Zelda Fitzgerald, at Binnacle Books

Adding entrepreneurship to their list of pursuits, the three partners invested in Binnacle Books have collectively been writers, editors, musicians, producers, organizers, filmmakers, and organizers. The bookstore specializes in used and new literature, poetry, literary nonfiction, political history, art, drama, philosophy, graphic novels, and children's books. They profess to offer some of the best prices around to buy your best books. And if the title in this picture, Save Me The Waltz, by Zelda Fitzgerald, is any indication, we are all in for many treats to come.

The children's nook is filled with surprises, both new and old. We picked up a new set of yoga cards and there were many books available for all ages. Initially, Binnacle Books is open 7 days! So no need to wonder which day you're going to walk through their red door. Happily, we at A Little Beacon Blog have ordered a new logo from The Things To Do In Beacon Guides designer, Allie Bopp, for a new Bookstores category in the Shopping Guide!

PS: This blogger was mildly obsessed with Zelda Fitzgerald in college during an American Literature course, when I picked Save Me The Waltz as the subject of an academic paper. However, the writing style of my paper was accidentally influenced by Zelda's tumultuous life (including some time spent at the Craig House in Beacon) and dreamy writing (and I don't mean dreamy as in sweet, I mean dreamy as in ... like how in a dream you switch scenes and emotions a lot), so the report was filled with research but was an #epicfail in terms of being on par with how research papers are written. I redeemed myself by directing Tennessee Williams' play about Zelda and F. Scott Fitzgerald, "Clothes for a Summer Hotel," which was equally dreamy (Williams called it "a ghost play" in the title). So you can imagine my surprise when I saw this old friend of a book on the shelf, which is not a common title to see in bookstores. And I don't feel so bad about my paper, because the play was dubbed a "critical and commercial failure" for Williams. I'm telling you - once those Fitzgeralds get in your head, things get confusing!

Indoor bulbs at Flora.
Fairly new to Beacon, and thus to our Beacon Shopping Guide, are two sweet shops: Flora and The PfotoShop. At Flora, you'll find plants, flowers, indoor bulbs, and gardening supplies, of course, but also unexpected touches of home decor, like giant watering cans and nightlights. Venture three-quarters of a mile down Main Street, toward Mount Beacon, to discover The PfotoShop, stocked with colorful pillows, handmade candles, frames, and other home-y elements. Fall Fashion Weekend in Beacon: Favorite Time To Shop

As New York Fashion Week wraps up its final days in the City before it heads to London, city-folk are departing the train at the Beacon station, neighbors from Cold Spring and other areas are driving up to find parking, and residents of Beacon are packing their purses to head out for a weekend of Fall shopping! And boy is there a lot to select from. For your full map on where to shop, see A Little Beacon Blog's Shopping Guide that names each shop in Women's Fashion, Men's Fashion, Kids, and so on.

But first, a look in pictures. Turns out that the yarnbombers were ahead of the curve fashion-wise, as leading some of the catwalks at New York Fashion Week wore crocheted dresses made to look handmade, from designers including Tommy Hilfiger, Custo Barcelona, and BCBG Max Azria. Trends from the 70's were in, like flare pants with tight tops. This is great news for ladies who love being comfortable. Fashion bloggers were spotted in unicorns and rainbows. Beacon based fashion blogger Nicole Alyse, vintage boutique owner of American Gypsy was there.  Overall, the trends seemed to be - do whatever you want. So here is what you will find in Beacon:

Target Up Route 9...The Happy Pill To Organizing Your Life!

"I wish I lived in Target," said my 5 year old on the eve of the First Day of Kindergarten. Little did she know that this guy did live in Ikea for a week back when people still used white pages and flip phones.

While she wouldn't find a lot of beds in Target on Rt. 9 in the Poughkeepsie Galleria, where you will also find a Best Buy, JC Penny, Macy's, and a full mall of stores like H&M, she could easily play in the "Kid Section" of Target all night, and forage for pizza and popcorn for dinner, and hopefully fruit from the back grocery area. I prefer the "Grown Up Section," which is everything else and includes these glorious organizational bins. Who knows how Target can transform your life! Need a laundry room makeover? Bring order to your office! Streamline your business!

Target is pulling out all of the stops on organizational bins, and has brought Montessori thinking to the masses. Like the phrase "Put a bird on it!", all you need to do is: "Put it in a box!" You can completely have any of these boxes in your kitchen, living room, bedroom, and even inside of your closets where only you and your cat see the chaos, yet he/she probably prefers sleeping in blended piles of sheets and towels rather than in bins of folded pillow cases.

#NoShame...peek inside my closet for the clarity that comes from bins!
Slouchy fabric containers...but of course! Maybe you will transport your laundry with a happy skip to your step. Maybe a slouchy container will live in the trunk of your car to contain the stuff thrown back there. Maybe the pretty fabric bucket holds towels for house guests in your bathroom (if you're like many in Beacon who don't have a lot of closets upstairs).

Reader take note: not every Target is the same, and the one up Rt. 9 is especially amazing for those living in Beacon and beyond. Just try to walk in without buying one little thing! When these creamy buckets are in the $1 isle (confession...they are $3), I come out with at least four buckets. You just never know when you'll need to hold toothbrushes or plastic fish from a game! In July/August, the shelves were stocked as you see them here and parents milled around with school supply lists. In early September, the shelves were actually getting bare, waiting for a re-stock after the rush from college and grade level schools cleared out the great ideas.

Easily enhance any vintage find at Beacon Flea Market with mini $3 buckets from
Target that come in a variety of colors!

Target this time of year is actually better than Christmas. #BackToSchool is really just an excuse for adults to buy organizational supplies and for wardrobe refreshs. Because really, the school supply list and all that surrounds it is the most fun part about September - whether you have kids or not!

This is the happy pill to your admin work.

Poughkeepsie Nissan is located just up Route 9, before Target.
