In your hand, this line of minimalist Japanese luxury eyewear is extremely light and precious - as precious as the metal used in the frames' design. 10 eyevan is the name of this collection (see all of the frames here) and they use solid Japanese titanium, plated with heavy metal gold and silver. Solid sterling silver is on the temple to balance the frame, and the nose pads are made from mother of pearl. Ultimate luxury. Go in to Luxe Optique to hold a pair yourself to see what we mean.

This is a special message for this issue of the newsletter, which falls on the Winter Solstice. Solstice (in the Northern Hemisphere) will be exactly at 5:23 pm.

Howling at the Edge of Chaos is closing on Saturday. Valerie J. Mitchell opened in Beacon a year and a half ago, and created a store that showcases artists' creations that "howl their truth," which is the store's motto. Valerie was diagnosed with a rare form of ovarian cancer in June. Less than three months after her treatments ended, she has learned that the cancer is back. It is in her liver and colon and she is considered terminal. Valerie says that she has chosen quality of life, and is not pursuing treatments. She will be traveling with family and being at peace with her next steps.

The lights have been on in the store on a hit-or-miss basis, in between doctor's appointments. We stopped in and made a few purchases (pictured above) yesterday, making sure to get in while the shop was open, pushing aside any other commitments that were on the calendar.

Two lessons here. First: Valerie wove into her shop's mission to get out the truth. Her storefront window was dedicated to ovarian cancer awareness, as it is one of the most silent and swift of the cancers, often going undetected. She wants more people to be aware of their bodies and to stay in front of them. A Little Beacon Blog will be sharing an ovarian cancer awareness post to help spread the word.

Second: After we hugged and laughed a lot about anything and everything at all, Valerie made sure to talk about the "Just a Card" campaign. She's very eager to sell everything in the store, so do go in, it's very festive. The "Just a Card" campaign is one that sends the message that if every person who walked into a shop and expressed their love and appreciation for it just "bought a card" - however small the purchase - it helps the store continue and prosper. A personal regret has been not buying more from Howling at the Edge of Chaos. Many times, there are lots of little treats that could have been purchased, but were "I'll treat myself to that later."

Later may not be available anymore. Out of this entire galaxy of time, we only live for 100 years of it, if that. Some only have 36 years, or 17 years, or 9 years, or 2 years. Don't wait for later. If you want this beauty in your life - these shops, these people who set up the shops and take big risks to be here - go inside. Treat yourself. Make someone happy with a gift.

HOLIDAY HOUSE LIGHTS
Y'ALL! Beacon, you outdid yourself again this year. Marilyn, ALBB's Managing Editor, points out that we have over 25 photos (so far) in the lineup. Thank you to those who emailed in their masterpieces! Says Lauren and Brent, whose house is in our collection: "My husband and I just moved to Beacon at the end of the summer, and we were SO excited to decorate our new home."

We literally drove around with Christmas music blaring from our iPhone when the radio wouldn't work, eating chocolate and snacks while collecting pictures when we could. Traffic can make it tricky to take pictures of some houses (Verplanck - you've got it going on! But we couldn't stop with cars!)

Street names are indicated where we can, but we couldn't record streets and take pics at the same time. Taking yourself on a night drive of Beacon is wonderful this time of year. Enjoy.

Antalek & Moore received a wish list from their family, and the staff went out and shopped for, wrapped and delivered the gifts. "We are so very fortunate to be able to support Astor this holiday season!"

Happening This Weekend - 12/7/2018

It's December's Second Saturday - maybe one of our most favorite Second Saturdays of the whole year! Businesses and galleries will be open later and the streets will be busy with holiday shoppers, art lovers, theater lovers checking out "A Chorus Line" by The Beacon Players, and tree-lighting spectators. See A Little Beacon Blog's Second Saturday Art Guide here.

Maybe consider taking a FREE yoga class at Firefly Yoga in Fishkill Saturday morning to get grounded first.

SEND 'EM IN!: Your Holiday House Lights. We'd love to make Beacon into its own Holiday Lights Show, but we need your tips! Sometimes we drive around hunting for house lights, but we can't get everywhere. Don't be shy - show us your inner Griswold! April Perri is a mother of three, lives in Poughkeepsie, and wanted to open a shop in Beacon - for moms. The name of her shop, in fact, is French for "the mother." Talk to her, and you'll find out: "It's not like we became moms and just died - that style doesn't matter for us anymore." April has curated a wide selection of brands that are affordable - and size-forgiving. Looking for inspiration? Let April pull some styles for you that maybe you hadn't considered. And if you need a quickie pair of sunglasses, she has those too. Follow her Instagram @lamereclothingandgoods to see what just came in.
PS: If you have a stroller and can't navigate the steps, consider parking the stroller in the front yard and bringing the baby inside. Speaking from experience, this blogging mother has gotten good at buying without trying on. The Discerning Eye has evolved.

The For Goodness Bake event is a Beacon staple, and has become an annual event throughout the years. Started by Kristen Pratt and Tara Tornello, the community-sourced bake sale raises money for one particular cause that has demonstrated an urgent need in the community. Say Kristen and Tara for this year: “We wanted to raise funds to help keep a beloved Beacon family together. For four years, this local family (who must remain anonymous) has helped to nurture a little boy who needed a home. Now his future and their family are in jeopardy as they face a difficult fight for his rights.”

Saturday: For Goodness Bake Fundraisers String Up Their Aprons Once More To Raise Money For A Family

for goodness bake 2018 flyer.jpg

The For Goodness Bake event is a Beacon staple, and has become an annual event throughout the years. Started by Kristen Pratt and Tara Tornello, the community-sourced bake sale raises money for one particular cause that has demonstrated an urgent need in the community (see below for info on how you can bake). This year, the highly anticipated bake sale is on Saturday, November 10, from 10 am to 3 pm at 145 Main St. in Beacon (aka Beacon Healing Massage and Create Space), near Bank Square Coffeehouse.

Say Kristen and Tara as to what inspired them to put on their aprons: “We wanted to raise funds to help keep a beloved Beacon family together. For 4 years, this local family (who must remain anonymous) has helped to nurture a little boy who needed a home. Now his future and their family are in jeopardy as they face a difficult fight for his rights within a legal system that consistently puts political interests above the best outcomes for children.”

How This Bake Sale Works

Bakers from around the Hudson Valley will join the fundraising efforts by donating a variety of sweet and savory baked goods. Pay-what-you-can beverages and coffee will be provided by Drink More Good and Trax Espresso Bar & Coffee Roasters.

Now in its sixth year, For Goodness Bake has previously raised nearly $15,000 for local causes, including the Beacon After School Program Tuition Assistance Fund, the Beacon Community Kitchen, Green Teen Beacon, and the Kids R Kids Feeding Program.

To learn more about the event or to get involved, call (845) 518-4194 or email forgoodnessbakebeacon@gmail.com.

To donate baked goods, sign up via this link: http://signup.com/go/jsTeNdH

INSIDER TIP! They are accepting baked goods up until the last minute. So if you have mad baking skills, use ‘em! I have done it (I am not a baker) and it was a wonderful initiative to be a part of.

Simply drop off to to Kristen and Tara tonight (Friday) at 145 Main from 6 to 8 pm, or Saturday from 7 to 8 am.

If you are reading this article after the bake sale has ended, but want to offer to bake for another one, email forgoodnessbakebeacon@gmail.com and ask to be added to their notification list.

Normally we take pictures of the cars themselves for the blog, but this year, we explored the Devil in the Details: the engines. Rhinebeck Bank | Fall Home-Buying Tips
Pro tip from Rhinebeck Bank: Just as purchasing a home is an extensive process, selling one can be as well. Most sellers do not want to enter the holiday season with interruptions and the selling process on their mind. It is not uncommon for homeowners whose houses have not sold by the fall to wait until the following spring. With this being said, sellers are worn out and may be more willing to negotiate and expedite the closing and move-in process.

Happening This Weekend 9/28/2018

Congratulations on making it through September! One of Beacon’s biggest events is Sunday, so get ready to fill yourself with Beacon spirit. The kids and parents of the Beacon City Schools, as well as many nonprofit organizations which you can see here have been working hard to present their interpretations of this year’s parade theme: “Celebrating Unity.”

SEEKING STATEMENTS FOR ARTICLE:
If you are an organizer of a float or presentation that is participating in the Spirit of Beacon Day Parade, we would like to hear from you about the meaning of your float in keeping with this year's theme. If you would like to provide a statement about how your organization is showing how it is "Celebrating Unity," please email your statement to editorial@alittlebeaconblog.com.

September is wrapping up with a bang, with popular yearly events like the Spirit of Beacon Day, the Garlic Festival in Saugerties, and the I Run Beacon 5K Run/Walk - there may still be time to sign up for the run, so get there early!

REAL ESTATE LISTINGS
Our first listing in Newburgh! Realtor Sarah Beckham Hooff reached out with very creative listings she has. Over the past few years, there's been a trend of people and businesses relocating to Newburgh, with an eye on commercial or residential properties to fix up. This multi- or single-family home is $159,900 and has lots of original details to play with, like tin ceilings.

Antalek & Moore Insurance Agency

According to the independent insurance agents at Antalek & Moore, if you have a condo in Beacon, you'll need personal insurance for it. Even though it is your home, homeowners insurance is insufficient. Therefore, you may think that you need a renters insurance policy - but unfortunately that would leave coverage gaps as well, despite some similarities. Let Antalek & Moore break it down for you.
