Happening This Weekend - 1/10/2020

You know what is the most convenient cool thing you have right now? The knowledge of what is going on inside of each art gallery in Beacon this weekend for Second Saturday - all. in. one. place.

That's right. A Little Beacon Blog's Second Saturday Guide Editor Catherine Sweet hunts and gathers for what is opening where, and then tells you the inside story about it. She even knows what gallery might have disappeared into a hiatus (like Mother Gallery this month), but who is showing upstairs at Parts & Labor Beacon at 1154 North Avenue (next to the twinkly lit windows of Giannetta Salon Spa when you're coming up from the train). Catherine even knows which coffee shops are hosting an artist on their walls (like Bank Square and Big Mouth Coffee Roasters this month). And even what brewery.

How do we do this? With the support of sponsors like No. 3 Reading Room & Photo Book Works located in the coziest little spot on Main Street near Brothers Trattoria. With sponsor support of our Guides, we can bring you these projects. Thank you to all of our advertisers!

No. 3 Reading Room & Photo Book Works
WRITTEN BY: Catherine Sweet

TOP LEFT: Industrial Arts Brewing Co. keeps pushing the boundaries of what we expect when visiting a brewery. First, they scored a resident food truck with Eat Church. Now, there’s art up on the walls. Industrial Arts welcomes Casey Inch, who was born in Brooklyn and raised in Connecticut. He went out to Colorado to earn his BFA in Painting, then in 2007 he moved to Brooklyn to deepen his painting and drawing studies pursuing an MFA at Pratt Institute. Inch exhibits his work nationally, and continues to work in his Brooklyn studio.
TOP RIGHT: The River, pastels from Croton-on-Hudson artist Evan Turk continues at Clarkson University’s Beacon Institute for Rivers & Estuaries in their Main Street gallery. Turk created the series of more than 150 pastel paintings in the span of an entire year, through all four seasons, reflecting on continuity, impermanence, and change.
BOTTOM LEFT: A trio of pretty-new openings at Dia: Better known for her work with sculpture and light, Marian Zazeela instead brings to Dia her works on paper, which ”showcase the range of materials and motifs that stem from the artist’s deep interest in calligraphy and ornamental forms,” according to Dia’s press release. It’ll be interesting to see how those more ornate pieces leap out from the less-decorative works that Dia’s known for.
BOTTOM RIGHT: Whispers from the Castle Keep, an exhibit of memorabilia from the Bannerman Castle Trust is on display at the Beacon Historical Society. It includes small artifacts from the Civil and Spanish American wars. Paintings, photographs, catalogs, and rare artifacts will tell the story of the Bannerman arsenal and castle.

It's FRIDAY! The calendar is back!
It's a new year, with a new mayor (watch the swearing-in ceremony here and read about his thoughts for Beacon), a new plastic bag ban that is happening (just ask Key Food), and there's a new but same homespun. We met and interviewed the new owner, Joe, for his vision, and got a wonderful note from Homespun's creator Jessica on Life After Homespun. For those who like wine in a really comfortable setting with really good but easy food, you're in for a treat.

PS: Our column Writerly Happenings is coming back! In these cozy times, you need to know about the reading and the writing. If you have anything writerly related, submit it here. Antalek & Moore Insurance Agency
The official start of winter is Saturday, and Antalek & Moore is here to share some tips to help keep everyone safe on the road:
*Slow it down - adjust your speed down to help with the lower traction you have when driving on ice and snow. Don't try to take off in a hurry and take extra time to stop for lights.
*Give extra room - increase your following distance to 5 to 6 seconds. The longer distance will allow for the extended time needed to stop.
*Keep moving - don't stop if you can avoid it. It takes a lot less effort to get moving while still rolling vs. from a full stop. This is true, especially with hills to help carry you to the top.

Baby, it's gray outside, but it's bright inside the shops who are staying open late for your holiday shopping! Pictured here is a photo from a person who used to live in New York, Rachel Calvelli, and loves coming back to visit, especially Beacon. She says: "One of my favorite little towns upstate. I love how much it's grown since I moved. And I especially love how the community supports the small businesses."

Tonight (Friday) is the last night of Hop & Shop, where participating stores are staying open until 9 pm. Will stores stay open later during the rest of the season? Perhaps... Only you will know when you drive or walk down - don't let Googling hours fool you! Get your answers IRL.

It's Second Saturday this weekend! Here is a peek at the opening or closing exhibits you don't want to miss.

A friendly reminder from Antalek & Moore: As you are checking off items on your holiday shopping list this year, they wanted to share a few tips to make it a safe and enjoyable time. 🎄Watch out for porch pirates. It is becoming pretty common to order a present or two online these days and many times your packages are delivered during the day while you are not at home. Take advantage of real-time delivery alerts to help ensure your items are received.

Until next week!

This is it! 3... 2... 1... Shop! The best part is, you live local, and you live among some pretty amazing shops with some pretty amazing clothes, earrings, paintings, sweaters, gloves, toys, hair color, nail polish, air plants, kitchen gadgets that solve your life's problems, tattoos, and more. Yeah - Beacon! One mile of retail solutions that you can feel good about because the shops are owned by your friends and neighbors.
PS: Speaking of air plants, there is a new furniture design store in town where you can find such holders, tables, shelves and more...

Even if those friends/business owners live in Poughkeepsie or Hopewell Junction and commute to Beacon each week to serve you up with a delightful shopping experience, you are helping them. And helping yourself because you bought something awesome.

Embrace the season, but safely: Turn on that Christmas carol station. Let it snow. Drive safe. Pump the brakes. Don't pass on the left if a car has stopped in front of you to turn left (biggest pet peeve about Beacon drivers especially in the snow).

Let's help ourselves out and hit up this Black Friday and beyond! Some deals await you in this issue of The Things To Do In Beacon Guides:
Sponsored by Antalek & Moore for car insurance.

Sleepwalker Pop-Up
Days: Saturday, October 12 to Sunday, November 10, 2019
Time: 6 to 8 pm
Location: 480 Main St., Beacon, NY (inside The Chocolate Studio)
Human consumerism and globalization has led to unsustainable living wages for the American working class and the precipitous decline of our planet. Sleepwalker challenges this apparent inevitability by posing a challenge. Is is possible to create and sell products within a community, priced within $5 of a comparable product found at a big-box store, while providing a $20/hour wage?

Happening This Weekend - 10/11/2019

This weekend is October's Second Saturday in Beacon, and wow, is it a big one. The No. 3 Reading Room and Photo Book Works, down near Brother's Trattoria, has opened again after taking a summer hiatus. This is your chance to step inside the mysterious destination, where at times they have the blinds drawn to protect the work inside. Maria Lago has new work in her gallery, with Cartas a Mi Madre.

While you're exploring, do step inside the Marion Royael gallery. Go allllll the way to the back to experience Mr. Yard, as we did yesterday. Here's a walk-through.

Darryl's Women's Clothing Boutique
155 Main Street

Meow! The faux animal print is in at Darryl's Clothing Boutique! The boutique is loving fall, and you will love the jackets you see in there, both cropped and shaped. This off-the-shoulder dress from designer Eva Varro is a show-stopper, as are the other dresses - and the black belts with cool hardware that you can decorate with. Do check these out in person...

Luxe Optique
183 Main Street

Look up close at the white side of this frame: it is granite, from the Hong Kong-based design house Rigards. Available now in white or black at Luxe Optique. Usually the side eye shade is soft, but not this rock-hard design. As delicate as they look, Rigards are created to be collector's items, to be worn and handed down to the next generation.

HEADLINE NEWS FROM OUR SPONSORS

Antalek & Moore
Antalek & Moore Insurance Agency has a special reminder for you regarding kid and bus safety now that school has started: "Share the road with school buses. We know the first few days take a little longer to get the kids loaded, but be patient! Who doesn't love a good first day back-to-school picture with their kids waving from the bus? According to the National Safety Council, the most dangerous area for children is within 10 feet of their bus. So give them space to load and unload. This is especially true in the first few weeks of school as kids are excited and getting used to this year's routine."
