This event is hosted by the Veterans Memorial Building and led by the Beacon American Legion Post #203. Reveille and flags will go to half staff. All will gather at E. Main Street Bridge. This will be a service for the Navel forces. 11:00am: The service at the Memorial Building will start. The Civilian portion includes pledge of allegiance, an indication, and a speech by Marine Corp Lieutenant Colonel,  BethAnne Canero, LTC. BethAnne is also an officer of the Guardian Revival Colleagues. The Guardian Revival Colleagues started in Beacon with a few employees and now has several employees. Guardian Revival is a New York State 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization chartered to revive and preserve the mental health and wellbeing of veterans and first responders - our guardians - at no cost to them. They do this through various programs, including Guardian Encore (music program) Another Summit (outdoor adventure program), and Boots and Paws (service and companion dogs matched with a human). Happy Mother's Day! And Second Saturday! :: Retail Therapy Guide 5/12/2023

Ok, for all you people who celebrate Mother's Day! There is a good message from our friend Moraya Seeger DeGeare here at BFF Therapy (who also has a love and sex wellness column at Refinery29), that encourages us to sit with our feelings about Mother's Day, and to be honest with how we want to spend the day. As a mother (this is Katie writing), I've always enjoyed being on my own in the garden, having peace with the plants and the soil. This year, we're going to shake things up a bit and be at the Cupcake Festival (yes, THE Cupcake Festival that was in Beacon two times until it was two times too many as everyone overdosed on sweets and parking issues) at Dutchess Stadium (now called Heritage Financial Park. Sunday, May 14th, from 11am-4pm. We will be be offering face painting and hair braiding with plenty of glitter. Even Unicorn Snot! Howland Public Library Announces March Exhibit In Honor Of Women’s History Month

To celebrate Women's History Month, The Howland Public Library presents Balance, a group show. The exhibit will be on view in The Community Room Exhibit Space from March 11th - April 1st, 2023. An Artists' Reception will be held on Saturday, March 11th, from 5pm - 7 pm.

The show is the seventh annual exhibit from the group CoMFY, a collective of women artists from the Beacon area. For this show the group chose the theme of Balance. The notion of balance was one of the founding principles when Kat Stoutenborough and Jennifer Blakeslee founded the women’s group back in 2011. Blakeslee recalls that the initial discussion focused on: “How do we, as women artists, balance everyday responsibilities (jobs, parenting, families, etc.) with being an artist? How can we create a space for ourselves where making art can exist alongside those other needs demanding our attention?”

The women came together to share strategies, bounce ideas, and encourage each other. Their one rule was that they could only talk about those other competing priorities in the context of how they impacted their artistic endeavors. “That focus made it possible for us not just to seek that balance, but find it and put it into practice.”

New members are always welcome to join this informal group. Stop by the exhibit to learn more.

It Was Spring-Like Today! | Retail Therapy Guide 2/10/2023

The original title of this email was "It's Valentine's Day Weekend!" And that was written by ALBB's Retail Editor, Teslie. When ALBB's publisher Katie read it, she cringed and blocked her eyes. Because Teslie is a newlywed and so much in love with her best friend, and Katie is in...a different place. So once again, this triggers the ALBB Trivia Fact of Katie's old college newspaper column (did blogs exist then?) that was a love advice column called "Dear Trudy," where in her first column out the gate, she answered a male's question, where he asked: "I see the same girl every day on the sidewalk on our class schedule, and we always lock eyes. I just want to kiss her. Should I?" Trudy's answer was: "Yes!" which surprised most male readers. Obviously, that act could be taken the wrong way. That aside. You get to have a Love Advice column here tonight on your Friday. Because you should have love. Even if you don't have love right now. The truth is, you may have told yourself long ago that love and real life do not mix. That the logic of real life could not withstand love. That love would confuse things. And make you not able to live a logical life. If you said no to love many years ago, and closed yourself off, then I'm here to tell you that there is this thing called "working it out" and "being vulnerable," that therapists seem to know about, and people in Beacon seem to know about because they are tapped into things like that. While we don't know how love works, it can be considered that if there is something pulling you to a centered place, that results in a desire to understand instead of a desire to be angry, then you may be on to something. And if it doesn't work out. If you are from different worlds (hello, didn't anyone see The Little Mermaid?!), or if there is a block of some kind, and you can't have the love you feel, then at least you felt. And you tried. And if you cried, that's OK. Because crying, deep sobbing, is an orgasm of the heart that you needed. Wishing you the smoothest Valentine's Day. Please do treat yourself no matter if you are also treating someone else or not. What you'll find below is Teslie's original intro for this newsletter. Dear Beaconites: THE RESTAURANTS DEPEND ON YOU. If any of you complain that Beacon has become a "bedroom community" where only tourists keep it alive, ALBB can tell you right. now. that YOU have the power to sustain us throughout the week. But you might not be coming out! Silly. Lots of you complain - or give the reason - "Oh, well, I don't come out mid-week because everyone is closed! I can't remember what day they are open!" True, Dear Reader. Usually Tuesdays are the worst days in Beacon for places to be closed. But. Places like Homespun and MOD and Ziatun and Max's on Main and Hudson Valley Food Hall have been trying their best to stay open 7 days for you, and for that, they must be rewarded. By You. You really need to go to them on a Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday. Their sales need to go up on those days! The weekends are flooded, yes, but the restaurants and boutiques cannot survive alone on that. They need you! You need them! PRO TIP: Order ahead. If you are working in an office in Beacon, and you say: "But ALBB, I only get a few moments for my lunch. I take a brisk walk down Main Street, and then I'm back in my building!" ALBB can tell you: "Order ahead, silly! Duck in on that fast walk and pick up!"
