Clearwater To Host A Mother's Day Fundraising Concert In Memory of Toshi Seeger Sunday May 10th

Mother's Day Tribute to Toshi Seeger announcement.png

Original, folk and grassroots activist musicians have been the heartbeat of Clearwater’s musical community; and over two dozen artists from around the country will be performing in a 12-hour Mother’s Day Tribute to Toshi Seeger on Sunday, May 10th from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. The event will be curated by a favorite Clearwater Festival performer, Fred Gillen Jr.

Tribute to Toshi Seeger

This Mother’s Day event will be a special tribute to Toshi Seeger, whose creative vision and environmental work made an enormous impact in the Hudson Valley, which lives on in Clearwater’s traditions still today. Beyond being an organizer, mother, road manager, photographer, and camera woman, Pete often credited his wife Toshi as being "the brains behind the operation.” Toshi also served on the Newport folk Festival board from its inception, insisting that they bring the musicians to the stage that were the mentors to the popular folk musicians of the ‘60s. She helped found Folklore Research Films, worked on the Rainbow Quest TV Series, produced by Sholem Rubenstein. Toshi was also the Executive Producer of "The Power of Song." She booked many musicians for Clearwater’s Great Hudson Revival, started the groundbreaking Litter-Picking & Recycling initiative and ensured wheelchair accessibility and ASC Interpretative Signing at the Festival.

Story tributes to Toshi Seeger will happen throughout the day by musicians, Seeger family members and others.

Facebook Live Concert Lineup

The Facebook Live concert will raise much needed funds for Clearwater’s critical environmental action initiatives and educational programming.  Performers and presenters include: David and Jacob Bernz, Laura Bowman, Tom Breiding, Sarah Browne, Kitama Cahill-Jackson, Julie Corbalis, John Cronin, Moraya DeGeare, KJ Denhert, Emma's Revolution, Susan Fisher Wright, Lori Frazer-Gross, Fred Gillen, Jr, Shirl and Steve Kaplan of Great Blue, Manna Jo Greene, Lisa Gutkin, Reggie Harris, Markley & Balmer, Mel and Vinnie, Rick and Donna Nestler, Tinya Seeger, Carolann Solebello, Spook Handy, and Matt Turk.

Click here to see the full schedule and concert lineup  https://www.facebook.com/events/3086082568081247/

The COVID-19 pandemic is a global crisis and leaves many of us unable to be together on Mother’s Day.  We hope to bring families together and share some music in the spirit of Clearwater’s folk and grassroots tradition.

This concert and other Clearwater fundraising efforts support the important environmental work, which includes:

  • promoting safe decommissioning of nuclear power plants, including Indian Point. Clearwater sponsored the ground-breaking Fall 2019 Regional Decommissioning Forum whose information was the foundation of legislative policy in 2020 for a state-wide Decommissioning Oversight Board of New York State agencies;

  • opposing new fossil fuel plants such as the proposed Danskammer expansion;

  • participating in the investigation of industrial runoff into the Hudson River from riverfront communities;

  • promoting the cleanup of PFOS, which contaminated Newburgh’s drinking water supply, from the source at Stewart Air National Guard Base;

  • ensuring accountability in the ongoing participation in the Hudson River PCB remediation;

  • and building a renewable energy future with the development of a seven-county Mid-Hudson Regional Renewable Energy Implementation Plan.

More information about this Mother’s Day Tribute to Toshi Seeger fundraising event will be available at https://www.facebook.com/events/3086082568081247/.

READER SUPPORT
A Little Beacon Blog would not be here if it weren't for YOU, our dear readers.  And we wish to share our heartfelt thanks and acknowledge you for your continued support.

If you've been following us on Instagram (@alittlebeacon), we've been sharing messages from readers who have contributed through our Readers Support page

FUNDRAISERS - HELP IN THE TIME OF THE PANDEMIC
At the request of one of our new reader supporters, A Little Beacon Blog complied an easy list of fundraisers to contribute to whenever you want to. Some of these are date driven. Those will be posted to the top of the list. This is a live guide, so refresh the page, and give when you can!

MEET THE ARF ALL STARS

Now more than ever ARF Beacon need your support and have launched for #givingtuesday Meet The ARF All Stars!  Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, they are not able to maintain operations as normal.  The main source of funds for ARF come through fundraising events & food/supply drives which have all been postponed indefinitely.
They have many animals that have been here a long time that may never be adopted through no fault of their own, "but we love them all," says ARF.  Your donation for one will help continue to provide the care needed for that pet and all of the ARF dogs and cats until they find their forever homes or no longer need ARF. But some pets come back, like Max, who came to ARF as a 3-month pup when a high-kill shelter wanted to put him and his siblings to sleep. He's back after his adopter needed to move and surrendered him. You can select the pet you want to donate to, as well as other animals in ARF's care, as needed. To see the individual animals you can donate to, click here.
The shelter will be closed to the public until further notice. This campaign is only a week long, and there are only 6 days left! Please contact ARF at www.arfbeacon.org if you are considering adoption.

FIREFLY YOGA FUNDRAISER
Yoga is a passion for our Managing Editor, Marilyn Perez. She practices yoga, completed her teacher training, and currently teaches at Firefly Yoga in Fishkill.  They just set up a GoFundMe page in order to help with rent and utilities, continue to provide free morning meditations, free classes on Wednesdays, as well as a full digital class schedule. Check out Firefly Yoga GoFundMe Page to learn more about this community and to donate.

BEACON HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS
The Governor announced today that both grade schools and colleges were officially closed for the remainder of the school year. In his message to the community sent via robo-call, Beacon's Superintendent Matthew Landahl gave a moment of consideration for the Senior class. A fundraiser has been started for them, by way of yard signs. Buy a sign for $20 and show your support in your yard.

FOOD SECURITY

Beacon Farmer’s Market via Common Ground Farms

Beacon’s Farmer’s Market is managed by Common Ground Farms, and reaches a lot of people who want fresh food, and who live in economic hardship. They have accepted forms of payment from economic benefits programs including SNAP, and WIC and FMNP checks. During this time of COVID-19, two main setbacks have happened: 1. the open-air market closed and moved to an online ordering system, with delivery and pickup, and 2. the market is unable to take SNAP payments but is using a workaround to make that happen which you can read about here if you need to use SNAP. Donations made to the Beacon Farmer’s Market will help them continue making these leaps in technological advancements (they have already built 2 websites to take online orders), deliver to people in need, and give SNAP users money to use. You can also buy a load of produce for a family in need with allocation of your donation.

Fareground

Fareground, Inc., a charitable 501(c)(3), is a women-run food justice, anti-hunger organization, dedicated to nourishing the community by increasing access to healthy and affordable food by supporting and creating opportunities for delicious meals, education, and volunteer opportunities. They currently are part of the coordination and financial effort in making Free To Go Dinner Bags available for pickup on Mondays mornings at Beacon High School and South Avenue. These are bags of groceries designed to feed a family of 4. Fareground also delivers these To Go Dinner Bags to people who live in housing communities in Beacon. This is key, because families in housing communities sometimes cannot get out to food distribution sites if both parents are at work, or a single parent is raising the family, for examples.

The Retail Therapy Guide - 4/17/2020

Binnacle Books has teamed up with @fareground, converting their dollar book shelves into a TINY FOOD PANTRY for the time being. Take what you need, leave what you can. If you have food or funds to spare, please help Binnacle Books keep this pantry stocked for anyone who is in need. Please note, if you’re adding to the shelves please make sure the food is nonperishable, super well-sealed, and is not expired!

Safe Haven Thrift Shop & Pet Food Pantry is a nonprofit organization that has been running a pet food pantry for 8.5 years, helping Dutchess County residents feed their pets. They are also involved with the Beacon Barks Parade. Normally, the residents they assist have to meet an income requirement. However, many people right now are out of work due to the virus, and the pantry wants to temporarily help them. Pet food is available for pickup on Saturdays.
Location: New address is 1545 Route 52, Suite 8, Fishkill
Day: Saturdays only from 10 am to 1 pm
How It Works: Come on Saturday and fill out a form and receive pet food. You can return in 3 to 4 weeks for more, depending on how much food is given.
How To Donate:
1. Drop off bags of cat or dog food during the pickup hours listed here.
2. Write a check to Safe Haven Animal Shelter, P.O. Box 596, Hopewell Junction, NY 12533

The Poughkeepsie Waterfront Market will open its 2020 season one month early on Monday, May 4, to increase access for City residents to fresh, healthy food during the continuing COVID-19 pandemic. Though the main museum is closed to visitors at this time as part of “New York on Pause,” the Mid-Hudson Children’s Museum is in a unique position among museums across the nation in that part of its core program – a public farmers market – has been deemed an essential business.

The Retail Therapy Guide This Week - 3/27/2020

Happy Saturday!

Apologies on the late send... My (Katie) son's eighth birthday was yesterday (Friday), and we had an early evening drive-in birthday sing for him. Hope that was OK! Most were in their cars or across the street in their own Sphere Locks (that's what I call household social distancing).

Internally, Marilyn and myself wondered what would become of the event-based weekend newsletter? We decided to dedicate the Friday newsletter to "Retail Therapy," because gosh darnit, the beat still goes on! We still need good books, new shirts, new shoes, new bikes, and delivery.

ALL RESTAURANT + SHOP COVID-19 STATUS ALERTS REGULARLY UPDATED
Marilyn, who is A Little Beacon Blog's Managing Editor, scours the socials to find out which restaurants are still doing carry-out, curbside delivery, etc. She updates the Restaurant and Shopping Guides for every single storefront on Main Street, East Main, and West Main. If your storefront is not in these guides and your business has a storefront here, let us know. If you see a "@inkcoffeeyoga NL" in the comments of your business's social media account, it means we've been by and are going to update a Guide or feature something here in the newsletter!

NEW: Also for Main Street businesses, we have added Fitness businesses into the Business Directory to include which Beacon fitness studios are doing things online. We are doing this basic listing for free. Any other type of business who wants inclusion and promotion in the Business Directory can learn about it here. We are doing this free of charge for storefronts, as a way to support our storefronts.

SUPPORT OPTION: If you do want to support ALBB, and want to include your scheduled class times and other fun details, as well as guarantee your upcoming online Zoom class schedules are included on ALBB's website and in this newsletter, you could start an advertising campaign. Starts at $100/month. Regardless, basic listings with links to the schedules are free at this time on the website.
Special note: Studios from Fishkill, Cold Spring, etc. are welcome and encouraged to be listed in the Business Directory, but we can only extend the free listing to Beacon businesses at this time. We are buried in our workload, but want to help!

EAT CHURCH (Closed For Now)
This week, Eat Church shared a super easy recipe for making bread at home. Here's what owner Mark says: "This is the most stripped-down bread recipe I've got as it makes a great standard white loaf but requires so few ingredients and so little effort. Great one to make with kids as most folks have the ingredients in the pantry."

BARB'S BUTCHERY (Closed For Now)
Barb's Butchery announced their temporary closure this week. The orders came in fast and furious. There were many tears in the Instagram. But businesses have to sift through a lot right now, figuring out financing and other everyday big hurdles that any business hits. We are all anticipating Barb's return so that we can fill our bellies once we all bounce back on the other side of the wave.

THE BEACON HOTEL & RESTAURANT
Also announced this week, the Beacon Hotel & Restaurant is also temporarily closing. From their Instagram: "Although this was a very hard call to make, we have made the decision that it is best to close our doors including take-out and delivery to protect the health of our employees and community. We appreciate every single one of you who has been here to support us during this hard time. We will all get through this, and look forward to having you as our guests when we re-open."

Other restaurants continue to be open.

TIN SHINGLE
Every Wednesday at 1pm, Katie hosts a live webinar for small businesses. Usually it focuses on how to pitch your business to the media for publicity (still relevant... SO many articles are being produced right now!). It alternates between free and open to all, and private for members only. This week's was private, and included Hudson Valley EATS and Fluid Running (jogging in place in a pool... sells a flotation kit and an app with running routines). Both businesses are navigating how to get the word out. Fluid Running is experiencing healthy sales from states down south as people shift running routines and run in their pool. Fluid Running wants to get the word out in a sensitive way, being mindful of people who don't have pools.

The Happened Yesterday Digest - 3/25/2020

Well, hello there!

A lot happened yesterday (and the yesterday before that) in the world and in the news. As a local blogger, a new thing that we're factoring into our writing and delivery of articles to you is the national news. Now that we are all watching the same thing (pretty much) on the TV, we are all hearing the different opinions about every single subject fly across different channels. This could cause anxiety at night, or during the day if you have the news on all day in order to catch live press conferences. (Pro tip: Keep the volume down until the president finally enters the room.) And yes, I did not just capitalize his job title. Not only do I not say his name, but I am no longer capitalizing his job title.

Before we get to the recap of what hit the blog the past few yesterdays, I want to address what happened two nights ago in the news: the 70-year-old Texas Lieutenant Governor who stated that he was fine with dying as long as the economy continued, the president suggesting we all go back to work and simply avoid touching metal subway railings, while his Surgeon General presented that this would be a very difficult week, while Governor Cuomo introduced the concept of going back to work after (not before) the tsunami hits the hospitals in New York. Part of why we are all staying home is to make that tsunami a little smaller.

Two nights ago, the national news media, and the president, were panicking about the economy. Valid. We all have been. This panic comes in waves. It is why so much legislation passed last week so quickly, that we will all be working to figure out this week and in future weeks.

As a mother of three young children, I want to tell you how I get through panic, anxiety and hopelessness. The feeling of something never ending. The feeling that life as you know it is over. That your business will stop forever. That what you do is not relevant anymore. That you must resign yourself to a new life of being in your PJs, hardly showering, being stuck in your house. Walking from end to end of your house on different errands for your children, sometimes being able to go to the basement for a moment of quiet while you switch out the laundry.

What I have just described is the life of a new mother. Fresh out of the hospital, her body recovering, her emotions hitting highs and lows. It's not the pretty pictures you see on the box of diapers of happy mothers feeding their babies. Sometimes it's that, but mostly it's a rollercoaster.

When you are a new mother with a tiny baby, you are feeding that baby all of the time. If you are nursing that baby, you are the main source of food. Literally. Your body. When that baby is hungry, you have to stop what you are doing and feed the baby. And your body may not produce enough food. And as you sit there, staring at your baby, who is wiggling and uncomfortable in your arms, you are wondering what you can do to fix this. Are you drinking enough water? Have you eaten today? How will you get to the grocery store? It would be nice to peel an orange or eat some chicken, but both of your hands are holding a baby.

Your brain cycles into this place of worry. And your reserves of nutrients aren't helping you. So your brain thinks that this will never end. But.

THIS WILL END... THIS IS NOT FOREVER... TAKE THINGS DAY BY DAY
But here's the epiphany. It will end! This is not forever. Every day is different. Every bite of food brings new energy to you, and you get new ideas of how to survive. And not just how to survive, but how to be in a good mood about it. I have had to tell myself, "This Is Not Forever. It Is Only For Right Now," many, many times during the baby phases of each of my three babies (now 9, 7 [almost 8, next week!] and 2).

Alright. Let's get to what happened the last few yesterdays so that we can get to today!

COVID-19 HOPE
VENTILATORS - NY NEEDS 30,000 VENTILATORS
Governor Cuomo has been asking for ventilators for a while. Now he is begging, and demanding that the federal government send their stockpile of 20,000 now. NY needs 30,000 ventilators, and has 7,000. The federal government said that they would send 400. Cuomo flipped out.
Here's Why >
Update: The federal government later responded by saying they would send 4,000.

2 NEW COVID-19 TEST COLLECTION CENTERS
For pre-screened people only, with a doctor's written order, a specimen collection center has been set up at Dutchess Stadium. Testing is not done on site, but is sent away with a six-day waiting period. Testing is a rapidly evolving situation, so expect more updates on this.
To qualify for testing (per Dutchess County):
- You called your doctor’s office and had a consultation.
- Based on your symptoms and other information you provided, your doctor determined you meet criteria for COVID-19 testing and ordered a test for you.
- You have a scheduled appointment at the collection site. Your doctor will give you the phone number to call to schedule an appointment at the collection site.

HUNTING FOR ANTIBODIES
Governor Cuomo is pursuing testing for people who have had the coronavirus, and have self-resolved. This includes people who may have had no symptoms, or mild symptoms. When the virus is in your body, fighter antibodies get made. Cuomo and scientists want those antibodies, to learn from them, and to possibly put them into other people's plasma.
Two big goals from this:
- Possibly save lives of critically ill COVID-19 patients.
- Possibly send people back to work who have already had coronavirus.
This was explained during Governor Cuomo's press conference on Monday (3/23/2020), but a good summation is here at Forbes. This is a developing story.

A Message From The Howland Cultural Center - Art in the Time of Corona

Editor’s Note: The following is written by Craig Wolf, the President of The Howland Cultural Center. The HCC is currently closed to the public from all events and regular meetings until further notice.

THCC.jpg

Ah, so here we are, with normal life brought to a standstill as we scurry around trying to avoid a virus and cope with the civil restrictions that it brings.

With apologies to Gabriel Garcia Marquez for cloning the title of his great novel, it does seem to offer a bit of a parallel. His heroine is involved with two lovers. Here, we all have two loves. We love our arts. And we love to stay healthy.

Not much is happening publicly here at our little nonprofit. We are an arts center that normally produces and presents performances and exhibits, largely administered by volunteers. We can’t do that right now.

COVID-19 isn’t quite cholera, but it’s serious. And we are serious about getting back to business when they let us. We regret that the postponements include our now-annual gala event, which will have to be rescheduled.

Meanwhile, we continue to work behind the scenes to plan a future, so that this bulletin will once again be filled with art events. We do expect this story to have a happy ending.

But for now, the impact of not producing events is a significant loss of revenue. It is through doing what we do that we earn a good chunk of our keep. What’s left on the revenue side for now is just donations. Thankfully, many friends have recently responded to our annual campaign, which we now call Friends of the Howland Center. And we thank you again.

So, if you have yet to help, now would be a good time. A really good time.

How do you become a friend at a social distance?  Good thing we invented the internet. You just click right here.

Best to all of you from the Howland crew, and stay tuned.

On behalf of our board and volunteers.

Household Hazardous Waste Disposal Event Cancelled

publication1_original.png

For those who have inquired, Dutchess County's Household Waste and Electronics Recycling Event, originally scheduled for Saturday, March 28, has been canceled pursuant to the local State of Emergency limiting social gatherings to stem a possible community spread of coronavirus. We are unable to schedule an alternate date.

Those who registered for this event will receive a refund: Those who paid by credit card will have their cards credited; those who paid by check or cash will receive a refund check or their voided check in the mail; refund checks are anticipated to be mailed on Thursday, March 19.

As of today, the next such collection event is Saturday, June 20, with registration opening on Wednesday, May 20. Those dates may change, depending on the status of the coronavirus pandemic. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we progress as a community through this evolving health situation.

Coronavirus and Stigma: Learn The Facts- Infographic

PUBLISHED: Wednesday, March 18, 2020

The City of Beacon sent this awareness piece issued by Dutchess County out to the media, to help spread the word and increase comfort levels as people do their thing to protect themselves. You can see more information like this at DutchessNY.gov/coronavirus

From the flyer:

Viruses don’t discriminate, and neither should we. Learn more about coronavirus and the stigma that comes with it.

Coronavirus Doesn’t Recognize Race, Nationality, or Ethnicity

2019 novel coronavirus started in Wuhan, China. That’s just geography. Having Chinese ancestry - or any other ancestry - does not make a person more vulnerable to this illness.

Wearing A Mask Does Not Mean A Person Is Ill

People wear masks for a variety of reasons, including to avoid pollen and air pollution and for cultural and social reasons. We should not judge someone for wearing a mask or assume they are sick.

You Can Interrupt Stigma. Start By Sharing Accurate Information

Avoid spreading misinformation. Stay informed through reputable, trusted resources:

  • Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

  • New York State Department of Health

  • Dutchess Country Department of Behavioral & Community Health

Speak Up If You Hear, See, Or Read Misinformation Or Harassment

Gently correct the false information, and remind the speaker: Prejudiced language and actions make us all less safe. If a serious harassment occurs, consider reporting it.

Show Compassion And Support For Those Most Closely Impacted

In schools and workplaces, create learning opportunities for students and staff that dispel racist and misinformed ideas. Listen to, acknowledge and, with permission, share the stories of people experiencing stigma, along with a message that bigotry is not acceptable in your community.

More information can be found at DutchessNY.gov/Coronavirus or via the Coronavirus Hotline, (845) 486-3555

Clearwater's Community Response To COVID-19

PUBLISHED: Wednesday, March 18, 2020

This is a message from Greg Williams, Executive Director of the Hudson River Sloop Clearwater.

In the spirit of Clearwater’s founding mission, to protect the happiness and health of the Hudson River, we feel that it is just as pertinent to take precautions to promote safety and health within our community.

As you are well aware, due to the recent Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, health officials have cautioned against large gatherings to reduce any further spreading of the disease.

Clearwater is adapting and responding, so that we can continue our important work of protecting the Hudson River and advocating for a just, clean energy future.

First, we're prioritizing the health of our volunteers, activists, staff, crew and entire community. The COVID-19 pandemic is a social and economic justice issue, as well as a health crisis. and we recognize that each of us have a social responsibility to be good actors in keeping others safe, too.

Our hope is that the country’s collective participation will help change the outcome of what COVID-19 brings to the human race; and prove that together, we can do even greater things for our environment.

Here are some specific steps that Clearwater is taking:

  • To support students spending time at home and teachers working diligently to keep their students engaged and energized, we are developing online education opportunities that allow students to explore and experience the Hudson River and the Sloop from afar.

  • We anticipate that many of our upcoming education programs (Tideline, Sailing Classroom, and In-School) will be affected as we implement necessary social distancing measures to protect our community. We will be in touch directly with the groups who scheduled for upcoming programs.

  • We are canceling our Clearwater Community Celebration scheduled for June 20 and 21 at Croton Point Park. Due to caution against travel, ticket sales and travel arrangements for the Community Celebration will be severely impacted. We understand the disappointment that our Clearwater family may feel in lieu of this unprecedented situation, and appreciate your understanding.

We will be happy to hear from you.

Ways To Support

Spring is a financially challenging season for Clearwater even in our best years. For an organization designed to bring people together, isolation and social distance are especially difficult. The prospect of cutting back our events and education programs for weeks or months presents a new and perhaps greater threat than Clearwater has ever faced. To make it through this, we need your support.

Call To Action

While we are taking this time to step back from public gatherings, we will continue our efforts to keep our waters protected in the digital world. A meaningful step that you can take today to protect the Hudson and surrounding communities, is to submit comments to the Nuclear Regulatory Committee against the sale of Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant to an unqualified, untrustworthy company called Holtec.

Digital Communities

While we may not be able to meet in public, we are continuing to build a strong community online. Please follow us on FacebookTwitter Instagram or YouTube to stay connected. You can also visit our website, Clearwater.org.

We would like to express our gratitude for your continued support, and partnership in our mission toward protecting the health and wellness of both our beloved Hudson River, and our community.
