The Hooded Chicken Debut To ALBB + Retail Therapy Guide 1/8/2021

Hello,
It's the weekend in Beacon, which may make for the perfect timeline refresh in your social media. Get fresh air, let Beacon's restaurants do the cooking for you, treat yourself to some bling for your keychain. Now is the time when retail therapy  helps your neighbors stay in their homes and their storefronts more than ever before. So have fun! And fill up a food pantry when there are 2 for 1  sales on your favorite items.

If you need to look at a very cute chicken right now, watch this clip of the Beacon Hooded Chicken graze while her best dog friend protects her.

Regarding the insurrection on Wednesday at the Capitol Building, there have been several public statements made so far:
Attention Beacon Storefronts: ALBB is making a Gift Guide: "Favorite Things For $25" Not a penny more or less.

BINNACLE BOOKS
321 Main Street, Beacon
We'd like to share this message recently posted by our friends at @binnaclebooks :
Despite the celebrations and the optimistic aphorisms and memes, these are not easy days. The needs we are trying to meet for each other, the responsibilities we have to ourselves, the fears and the struggles, are as present today as they were six months ago, two weeks ago, yesterday. We don’t intend to tell you how to do what you need to do, but don’t forget that our problems, however dire, are not new. And so the solutions don’t come quick. And the solutions are often anything but direct. You might find reassurance in the slowness of a book, the delicate complexity of a narrative, the oblique suggestion of a poem. You might find resolve in these things. We simply have to keep working and taking care of ourselves in each other.

BRETT'S HARDWARE
18 West Main Street, Beacon

ALBB is following a story, and has now become part of it, of a Black business friend and client of our Business Directory, Bluegreen Lawns, who was looking for a loan for a commercial purchase of a snow blower or truck, could not get such a loan because of how lenders view credit history, and was out of luck during the first snow storm when their snow blower blew. For a company who does snow removal, snow is money. They started a GoFundMe, and ALBB chipped in. And then we shared it to our community. And you - the community - pulled through! They raised just over $1,000 so far. Brett's reached out to them to find a good deal on a snow blower, and the purchase was made. Stay tuned for the big reveal after the machine ships!

Toy Drives, Restaurant Act, Gifts | Retail Therapy Guide 12/18/2020

This week is your last week to contribute to several Toy Drives. A Little Beacon Blog did a roundup of a few of local ones you can easily participate in. Get the details here!

Friday night is a no-parking night on Main Street, starting at 11pm, through Saturday morning at 10am. Beacon's Highway Department will be working overnight to clear the sides of Main Street of snow, which will make it safer to drive through and walk along Main Street. Perhaps expect more of this after a heavy snowfall. Also, hopefully you didn't park on the street the night of the dump!

A Little Beacon Blog's publisher, Katie, has a monthly column in the Highlands Current newspaper. It was originally set to run last week, but Katie and some members of her family got COVID-19, and she had some writer's block. The newspaper suggested she write about her diagnosis in a play-by-play journal entry style. So she did, and it's out on newsstands now. But not to get scooped by the paper on her own story, you can find the official announcement of the COVID diagnosis on A Little Beacon Blog right now, with more details. The play-by-play in the Highlands Current is a good read also, so be sure to pick it up, and look for it posted online soon.

LATEST NUMBERS: Beacon has 54 active COVID cases as of today (was 41 last week). East Fishkill has 193 (133 last week), Fishkill has 75, and Poughkeepsie has 119 (90 last week), with Poughkeepsie City at 173 (last week 102). There are 77 cases awaiting address confirmation.

HOMESPUN
232 Main Street, Beacon, NY
and the Cafe at the Dia : Beacon

This week, Homespun shared a video on their Instagram (@homespunfoods) from Bobby Stuckey, a restaurant worker and owner from Colorado and one of the founders of the Independent Restaurant Coalition. Bobby speaks about the Restaurant Act which are two bills sitting on the desks of senate leadership since June 2020.  Watch the full video here.   Continue to support your local restaurants by ordering takeout, delivery, curbside pickup.  If available, or if the restaurant prefers it, do your best to order directly from your favorite restaurants and not go through third-parties like Grubhub or Doordash. Each restaurant will be different, depending on what kind of delivery they offer. And remember to piggy-back on your friends order of takeout if a restaurant does not offer delivery at all.

TakeOut, Beautiful Candles, More | Retail Therapy Guide 12/11/2020

In a throwback to the Bicycle Menorah, in the olden days of when sculptor Ed Benavente designed and built what became Beacon's annual nightly menorah lighting, organized by Beacon Arts, Beacon Hebrew Alliance, and the City of Beacon...Happy Hanukkah! This photo was taken in 2017, on the 7th night when the lighting was dedicated to Activists. The lights represent "a bright light into the darkness."

In New York City, Governor Cuomo has ended indoor dining for now, encouraging outdoor and takeout. Other parts of New York, including Beacon, are still able to offer some capacity of indoor dining. However, ordering takeout is crucial to these restaurants. Quinn's, for instance, announced this week that they are doing takeout only.
PRO TIP: If a restaurant does takeout, but does not deliver, tell your friends to keep you on speed-text if they are ever ordering. This way, you can also call in an order, pay for it, and your friend can do a group pickup for all of you. That's what we're going to do for Quinn's. We are putting our neighbors on high-alert, that if they place an order, tell us! Because we will piggy-back on that pickup.

Shout-out to Vogel Pharmacy, who despite moving out of Beacon when their building on Main Street went up for sale (now is home to graphic design agency Beacon Digital, next door to Homespun) still reaches Beaconites by delivering to homes. They delivered before the pandemic, and continue to do so. With extra love and a personal note. Vogel's new home on 9D, near the Dollar Store, has plenty of parking, and they will even deliver to your car if you have little kids in the car.

LATEST NUMBERS: Beacon has 41 active COVID cases as of today. That number is not going down. East Fishkill has 133 and Poughkeepsie has 90, with Poughkeepsie City at 102. There are 390 cases awaiting address confirmation. ALBB is looking into what that means.

A Temporary Closing; A Move; Gift Ideas; Great Food | Retail Therapy Guide 12/4/2020

Hop And Shop Beacon, the annual holiday event created in 2018 in effort to show off and support businesses in Beacon, continues today with special deals and offers. Some stores will be open late. When inside of a store, be sure to ask about their deal.

PSA For Boutique Shopping Main Street:
When you're out boutique shopping, if you pick up an item and think to yourself: "This is too expensive!" there are a couple of things you need to remember that goes into that price (and by the way, most of the stores on Main Street are not too expensive):
  • Experience: You are shopping in an experience. When you walk into a shop or restaurant, the owner has carefully set it up to delight you. If you want to keep them there, for you to walk past most every day because their window is pretty, you need to buy from them.
  • Health Insurance: The shop owner may be paying their employees Health Insurance. If they aren't yet, they may be working their way up. This is a major expense, and by you buying something without huffing about a price, know that you are helping to make that insurance possible.
  • Windows and Siding: Sometimes buildings get vandalized with spray paint. No matter what the message - if you agree with the message or not or are a fan of street graffiti - that business owner or building owner (sometimes the same person) needs to remove the paint, as required by City Zoning Code. Lately, businesses have been catching someone etching wording into their storefront glass. That's a problem, and something the business owner needs to pay for.
  • Give Them Another Try: If you went to a store one time years ago, and did find it too expensive, walk in again. They may have totally changed their price-point. If you went to a restaurant and thought your burger was too small, walk in again. Something may have changed.
  • Be Nice: If you are going to question a price or attempt to hold someone to an expired deal, just know that we're all just trying to get along and have nice experiences with each other. xoxo
Ok! And now you're off to the races of shopping and eating! Though if you need a reminder to achieve a $0 credit card balance, we have an article for that too!)

It's Happening - Holidays, Wreaths, The Works. Retail Therapy Guide 11/27/2020

Hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving, and props to those of you who did it for the first time - If you usually travel, and hosted it yourself this year! Word on the street is that kitchen and food stores like Utensil and Key Food were giving out lots of last minute advice.

Today is Black Friday, and it's not always about the sales (see Beacon Mercantile's approach below, where she donates a portion of a purchase during the weekend instead of offering a discount).

This year, it's about the business - keeping our shops in business because they are people just like you. Running their business is their job. This is a time when Retail Therapy feels as good for you as it does for them. Pays their rent, pays their bills, pays their paychecks.

Even if you go to the mall (we are not mall-shamers!) you are keeping someone employed who goes to work there every day or every week, stocking the shelves, answering customer's questions.

If you don't have the budget to buy this year - don't you worry! You being you here in Beacon is all that matters. Keep smiling, and keep in touch with your people. Light a candle, and have a relaxing evening.

If you are having a hard time, you are not alone. An early tinsel tree triggered a mini-meltdown 2 weeks ago for this blogger, so if you need to identify, you can read this article.

And now, on to the Things To Do!

Live Light Travel Often (LLTO)
464 Main Street, Beacon

This soap, carried by LLTO is the most slipperiest slope-y soap you will ever find. Adorable on a dish,
the Erode Soap Summit Series becomes one of desire and play, adding a different kind of beauty to the daily ritual of bathing. Each organic soap is poured and cast by hand, so that the organic scents and botanic ingredients are revealed in layers, carefully chosen to blend together. The design’s luscious and unique shape suggests its own obsolescence—the slopes are meant to be rubbed, the ridges meant to be worn off. Made in Oakland, CA. Pink grapefruit essential oil, purifying rose clay, goji berry extract, and clarifying papaya enzymes combine forces to make abrilliant bar soap. The lather is creamy, moisture rich and gentle and the scent is delicately tart and fresh. Vegan, cruelty free and wonderful for all skin types. The soap pictured here, White Grapefruit, is spotted like a dalmatian.

BINNACLE BOOKS
321 Main Street, Beacon
Available at Binnacle Books - “Feminism for the 99%”  by Cinzia Arruzza, Tithi Bhattacharya, Nancy Fraser. “Unaffordable housing, poverty wages, inadequate healthcare, border policing, climate change—these are not what you ordinarily hear feminists talking about. But aren’t they the biggest issues for the vast majority of women around the globe?

Taking as its inspiration the new wave of feminist militancy that has erupted globally, this manifesto makes a simple but powerful case: feminism shouldn’t start—or stop—with the drive to have women represented at the top of their professions. It must focus on those at the bottom, and fight for the world they deserve. And that means targeting capitalism. Feminism must be anticapitalist, eco-socialist and antiracist.”

SCHEDULE: Donations, Pie, A New Pop-Up, and More | The  Retail Therapy Guide 11/20/2020

Lots going on this Friday! The sun is shining, and hope is restoring, despite important news on all topics that continues.

First of all, there is pie. Readers want to know where to buy pie in Beacon, and we did the research. Turns out, pie order deadlines have passed, though some are going until November 22nd. We have the list for you here!

Next, there is COVID. Dutchess County joined with Putnam County and Ulster Counties, and many governors across the country, to ask you not to travel for the holidays. The Mayor of Beacon also issued a robo-call encouraging social distancing. According to data shared by the 3 County Executives in a tri-county Zoom update to the public yesterday (Thursday), the COVID spread is mainly coming from personal spheres of people letting their guard down with neighbors and friends at their homes (and not in businesses or schools), according to county's contact tracing efforts. We have the article for you here with more details. If you feel awkward wearing a mask inside of a friend's house, it's time to push past the weirdness and just wear it when visiting friends - if you must visit. Consider limiting playdates to outside only, and closing your sphere to no kid playdates in homes, no matter if friends are constantly dashing between the same houses.

Many are asking where to donate food or money to Food Pantries and Soup Kitchens (hot meals). A Little Beacon Blog keeps a list of resources in Beacon that includes email addresses of coordinators, and direct lines to churches or organizations that you may not have heard of otherwise. We are in the process of updating it, and in fact, are always updating it as new coordinators come on board and opportunities created. At moment, are are getting several updates from Fareground, a deeply resourced group here in Beacon that distributes food and takes donations. Please visit ALBB's Food Pantry and Soup Kitchen Guide when considering where to donate. And reach out and email someone if you don't see a donation link. Thank you!

Rally To End The New Jim Crow
From Beacon4Black Lives
Day
: Saturday, November 21, 2020
Time: 1:30pm
Where: Memorial Park
From the Organizers: "Decarceration. Human Rights. End the New Jim Crow. Bring Signs. Wear Masks."
If you need a refresher on what Jim Crow laws were, in order to learn more about what people mean when they saw "New Jim Crow," they were segregation laws. PBS describes it: "The segregation and disenfranchisement laws known as 'Jim Crow' represented a formal, codified system of racial apartheid that dominated the American South for three quarters of a century beginning in the 1890s. The laws affected almost every aspect of daily life, mandating segregation of schools, parks, libraries, drinking fountains, restrooms, buses, trains, and restaurants. 'Whites Only' and 'Colored' signs were constant reminders of the enforced racial order...It would take several decades of legal action and months of nonviolent direct action before these efforts achieved their intended result."

Live Light Travel Often (LLTO)
464 Main Street, Beacon

THEY'RE BACK! LLTO was a victim of the pandemic, opening on Main Street just months before the shutdown happened. They waited it out, and closed soon after. But LLTO is popping up in a new location on Main Street, next to the new Bagel Shoppe! This gives you one more chance to visit their tightly curated collection in person (always available online).

Featured this week is the crane grater. An exquisite combination of function and beauty, this grater is designed by Ooya Seisakusho.  Every "tooth" of this palm-sized copper grater is carved out and pointed upwards by craftsmen using the same technique developed in the Edo period. This technique cuts as opposed to crushes like other steel and ceramic graters (aka, is great for grating ginger). If that's not enough, the crane is a symbol of long life and happiness, bringing good luck into the home. No time to get to the store? You can order it online. ⠀

"Last Call 10pm" And The Retail Therapy Guide 11/13/2020

It's Second Saturday! The world may be changing (for the better), but Second Saturday remains. If you need to de-stress from the week, consider visiting Beacon's Beans Cat Cafe, which is open (a place to hang with cats, get a Black and White latte with whipped cream, and do you need more? ALBB's Izzy Dabashi wrote about it here).

Meanwhile, the Animal Rescue Foundation (ARF) really needs your help, as all of their in-person fundraisers have been canceled due to you-know-what. Donate here to their latest fundraiser, which is at 30% of its goal.

For humans who need groceries, ALBB just updated our Food Pantry Guide with the PayPal info to donate to Mutual Aid Beacon. They have been working since the beginning of the pandemic to bring people food and connect them with resources, and are always involved in projects.

And for this week's biggest news, the 10pm curfew imposed on the late night scene of restaurants and bars. As one 8 year old said: “Everybody knows that COVID cases are coming from people kissing at bars.” The truth may be that infections are spreading at home as people get lax in their social circles. Regardless, how are Beacon restaurants and bars dealing with it? We interviewed a bunch, and got some answers.

PS: Beacon has 8 COVID cases at moment, but there are 234 cases who are pending address confirmation according to the Dutchess County Dashboard.

THE SECOND SATURDAY GUIDE

Edited and Written By: Catherine Sweet
You guys, we need your help! A Little Beacon Blog keeps the most comprehensive Second Saturday Guide around. That is because it is actually hard and time consuming to find info from the artists! But our editor Catherine sleuths around for it, and finds it. Basically, exhibits are usually announced a day before they open LOL so this is always a crunch-time type Guide for us. But the artists LOVE it, especially those who are popping up in unusual places, like Twins Barber Shop.

Trouble is, we need at least 5 Corporate or Individual Sponsor for it. Are you in? Details are HERE for Business or Individual Subscription Sponsorships, and they are on sale now. Artists and Galleries can have their own advertising package too, for a lower price. Details on artists pricing are HERE, and includes extra photo and Instagram options.

BINNACLE BOOKS
321 Main Street, Beacon

We love to see a young one discovers a new book, like this one by Kai Kalia Yang, Khoa Le, “The Most Beautiful Thing”.

From  Binnacle Books, “Drawn from author Kao Kalia Yang’s childhood experiences as a Hmong refugee, this moving picture book portrays a family with a great deal of love and little money. Weaving together Kalia’s story with that of her beloved grandmother, the book moves from the jungles of Laos to the family’s early years in the United States. When Kalia becomes unhappy about having to do without and decides she wants braces to improve her smile, it is her grandmother—a woman who has just one tooth in her mouth—who helps her see that true beauty is found with those we love most. Stunning illustrations from Vietnamese illustrator Khoa Le bring this inter-generational tale to life.”

THE RETAIL THERAPY GUIDE
Edited and Written By: Marilyn Perez and Katie Hellmuth Martin

Story Screen RE-OPENING
Day:
Friday, November 6, 2020
Location: Story Screen Beacon, 445 Main Street, Beacon, NY
Wwwwwwat!!!?? Beacon's movie theater, Story Screen, is opening their doors to the inside! What's playing? Who knows! Does it matter? Just kidding. Here is the lineup. More importantly, here's how the Story Screen folks are running things to ensure safety. And they are being very strict! Like, stricter than usual. Basically: buy tickets online only, but if you can't buy online. You can email them for other ways of buying. Speaking of emailing them, there's no congregating in the lobby with questions for the staff. You can call them! And absolutely, positively, no sneaking in food. The End, Period.

This is what talking to a sommelier sounds like. We will let Joe describe this wine in his own words. Before we do, make note that as of now, Homespun is really only open on the weekend (Thursday - Sunday) so buy your wine, beer, and cookies now. Dine in for lunch and dinner. Here's Joe in his own words about this weekend's featured bottle:
"Les lendemains qui chantent... the tomorrow’s that sing... ‘Le temps des cerises’... The time of cherries... a French song that was a metaphor regarding what life will be like after the revolution will have changed social and economic conditions to create fairness and prosperity for all. Here’s to you. And the wine...Grenache doing what it can do with a restrained, deft touch, and also a cooler vineyard site located at 450 meters above sea level, in the forests of the Parc Naturel Regional du Haut-Languedoc."

Retail Therapy Guide 10/30/2020

Happy Halloween! The year's first snow fell in Beacon today, which according to the radio, is a result of Tropical Storm Zeta. A reader in our Instagram triggered a memory for the major winter storm in Beacon's history - October 29-30, 2011 - as it brought down so many power lines because of the heaviness of the snow on trees that most likely still had leaves on them. The following October 2012 was Hurricane/Superstorm Sandy. Scary October!

There's an easy way to trick for treats this year if you have little kids - hide the candy in your house to avoid taking from other people, and then wander around outside in costume to visit with friends. Beacon has about 18 active COVID cases right now, which includes the Beacon High School reporting 1 case, and then 1 more, and Rombout Middle School reported 1 case. Protocols and disinfecting days are being conducted. Wishing everyone health and safety. Have fun this weekend and be safe!

TIN SHINGLE
Work From Home Tip:
Some of you may have moved out of your beautiful offices or studios, and are looking around your house and are like... 👀... I need that beauty of my space. One quick, easy, and inexpensive way to instantly upgrade and warm up a room is to pick warm lighting. Florescent or LED lighting may save some cents (but be real...are you really putting that savings into something useful?) but the harsh cast of the light may be costing you happiness, as it strains your eyes and drains your soul. An easy favorite right now is at Brett's Hardware. In this video, you’ll see different size light bulbs, from tiny to gigantor! The gigantor one is being tried for a kids room to replace the standard white globe cover that came with the ceiling fan. It’s a conservative budget step to take before upgrading the ceiling fan with a more stylish look.

According to the organizers: "We have a meeting on the table. Elected and appointed officials, as well as educators and parents, are becoming familiar with the NYS Assembly Bill A03648, which appropriates $25,000,000, nearly for a lot of the essential things we’ve been demanding for, collectively. We’re proud to have organized around community, movement, and justice regarding our demonstrations and efforts to decolonize education. Since this Summer, we’ve been planning a significant disturbance of our business as a usual society because our Black lives matter." BINNACLE BOOKS

Binnacle Books are still giving away FREE COPIES of “Beyond Survival: Strategies and Stories from the Transformative Justice Movement”. Would you like to read it? Come to the store and ask for a copy. It’s as simple as that. Says Binnacle: "We want our community to read this wonderful book, and to read it together."

Transformative justice seeks to solve the problem of violence at the grassroots level, without relying on punishment, incarceration, or policing. Community-based approaches to preventing crime and repairing its damage have existed for centuries. However, in the atmosphere of contemporary criminal justice systems, they are often marginalized and operate under the radar. ‘Beyond Survival’ puts these strategies front and center as real alternatives to today’s failed models of confinement and ‘correction.’

SCHEDULE: Parking and Retail Therapy Guide 10/16/2020

Alright so it's raining...but that might not stop anyone from coming up to this region for a visit, especially during leaf season. Apparently in Cold Spring, people are parking a bit haphazardly, causing parking tickets to increase from 50 in June, to 277 in September, according to the Highlands Current. Meanwhile, in Phillipstown, officials are threatening to sue New York State over its management of visitors to local parks. Officials have discussed deputizing a tow-truck company to tow away illegally parked cars near Indian Brook Falls in Garrison.

In Beacon, The Parking and Traffic Safety Committee has been hearing from residents whose personal property and street parking have been hampered by hiker parking. The cul de sac at Exeter Circle was a place families moved to in order to use the circle for children riding bikes and playing, but can no longer due to constant hiker parking, according to a resident who submitted a complaint to the committee. A proposal for "resident only parking" has been made for Exeter Circle, as well as to Mountain Lane. The issues have made it to City Council who is holding a Public Hearing about it on October 19, 2020.

Meanwhile on Main Street, drivers do commonly not see people standing in crosswalks, and with more young and teenage children and families out during the middle of the day, it is paramount that you take notice, and drive slow enough to even notice a person standing on the side of the road. And you know how we feel about U-Turns (that includes you, Hubby of ALBB!)

WELCOME!
Special welcome to our new sponsor, Brett's Hardware! If you recall, we were so happy to have a hardware store open up in Beacon back in 2018 (it's been a while since we had one!).

BINNACLE BOOKS
321 Main Street, Beacon

Now available at Binnacle Books, David Treuer, “The Heartbeat of Wounded Knee: Native America from 1890 to Present”
“Through memoir, interviews and extensive reading, Treuer counters the familiar narratives of invisibility that have so readily frozen America’s indigenous peoples. Interweaving stories from family members, the voices of policymakers and assessments of contemporary youth culture, the book introduces alternative visions of American history. The result is an informed, moving and kaleidoscopic portrait of ‘Indian survival, resilience, adaptability, pride and place in modern life.’ Rarely has a single volume in Native American history attempted such comprehensiveness.” (NY Times)
