This Sun...This Weather!! The Retail Therapy Guide 5/21/2021

Things-To-Do-In-Beacon-Retail-Therapy.png
It's the weekend! The fast moving pace that is Beacon's Saturdays and Sundays. Word on the street is - people are at least paranoid now for doing U-Turns all over the place. We overheard a conversation about who was thinking they were going to get pulled over. Know how to not get pulled over? By not doing U-Turns - literally all over Beacon. On Willow Street - the rate of U-Turns last Saturday morning was 1 per minute. We have pictures, and we will start posting them.

The Mask Mandate. Beacon's businesses are posting their preferences. Most are keeping others safe by keeping masks UP. So please respect the signs when you see them. Or go home! Love ya :) Plenty of masks still for sale in Beacon's boutiques!

This adorable mask sign is in Meyer's Olde Dutch, which is OPEN starting today! Their new signage was designed by ALBB's sister company Katie James, Inc., and we are recommending whatever cold cocktail they just put on the menu.

BINNACLE BOOKS
321 Main Street, Beacon

Chimamanda Ngozi Adiche, “Notes on Grief”
“‘Notes on Grief’ is an exquisite work of meditation, remembrance, and hope, written in the wake of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s beloved father’s death in the summer of 2020. As the COVID-19 pandemic raged around the world and kept Adichie and her family members separated from one another, her father succumbed unexpectedly to complications of kidney failure.
Expanding on her original ‘New Yorker’ piece, Adichie shares how this loss shook her to her core. She writes about being one of the millions of people grieving this year; about the familial and cultural dimensions of grief and also about the loneliness and anger that are unavoidable in it. With signature precision of language, and glittering, devastating detail on the page–and never without touches of rich, honest humor–Adichie weaves together her own experience of her father’s death with threads of his life story, from his remarkable survival during the Biafran war, through a long career as a statistics professor, into the days of the pandemic in which he’d stay connected with his children and grandchildren over video chat from the family home in Abba, Nigeria. In the compact format of ‘We Should All Be Feminists’ and ‘Dear Ijeawele,’ Adichie delivers a gem of a book–a book that fundamentally connects us to one another as it probes one of the most universal human experiences. Notes on Grief is a book for this moment—work readers will treasure and share now more than ever–and yet will prove durable and timeless, an indispensable addition to Adichie’s canon.”

KATIE JAMES, INC.
Grand Rising, friends! That is the morning mantra of Nickeya Allen, the Millennial Matriarch you have seen participating in community, economic and housing development spaces. Nickeya's capacity is vast and vital, and she needed a logo to capture all that she offers. Tapping into her vibe and messaging over the years, Katie James, Inc. designed this logo for her, and are honored that it was accepted by Nickeya to represent her brand. The 3 pillars of Millennial Matriarch are: Business Development, Proposals, and Liberation Projects.

Says Nickeya: "The work is intertwined with mindset coaching for those that wish to change the trajectory of our futures, unapologetically developing a better foundation that is beneficial for younger generations to come up in by way of fostering liberating experiences in business and leading vigorous acts of change!" Today Nickeya, a mother of 2 kids, walked across the stage at Mount Saint Marry College with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management. 🤞🏾
Last month, Nickeya's project, YBG Lit Expo, was awarded the New York Council on the Arts & Arts Midhudson (administered by Arts Midhudson).

Lot's Going On! Retail Therapy Guide 5/15/2021

Things-To-Do-In-Beacon-Retail-Therapy.png
It's been quite a week, friends!

The weather is beautiful and you are probably officially moving your winter sweaters to your winter storage bin to make room for fresh spring tops (but we know of a 30% off sweater sale happening now! scroll down). Lots of major things happened this week:

ALBB's podcast has returned! And with song. What started as a planned pod about Disney presentations of female and family values, turned into an improv jazz session, if you will, covering random but important topics.

One of the wake-up calls in Beacon this week was The Accident, where a 6 year old boy and his grandmother were hit by a car while they were on the sidewalk. Our coverage of traffic on Main Street and in Beacon in general was going to dominate our news cycle this week, but then also the conflict in Palestine and Israel escalated after a neighbored protest in Palestine launched a bunch of rockets. There is a protest in solidarity with Palestine in Newburgh next week, after several have happened in NYC. With that global news localizing, we are offering some perspective on it here at ALBB's sister media company Tin Shingle.

Traffic coverage is to come next. In the meantime - please be very careful out there! Drivers are driving fast, and doing too many U-Turns.

BINNACLE BOOKS
321 Main Street, Beacon
Victoria Law, “Prisons Make Us Safer and 20 Other Myths About Mass Incarceration”
“The United States incarcerates more of its residents than any other nation. Though home to 5% of the global population, the United States has nearly 25% of the world’s prisoners—a total of over 2 million people. This number continues to steadily rise. Over the past 40 years, the number of people behind bars in the United States has increased by 500%. Journalist Victoria Law explains how racism and social control were the catalysts for mass incarceration and have continued to be its driving force: from the post-Civil War laws that states passed to imprison former slaves, to the laws passed under the “War Against Drugs” campaign that disproportionately imprisons Black people. Through carefully conducted research and interviews with incarcerated people, Victoria identifies the 21 key myths that propel and maintain mass incarceration, including:
- The system is broken and we simply need some reforms to fix it
- Incarceration is necessary to keep our society safe
- Prison is an effective way to get people into drug treatment
- Private prison corporations drive mass incarceration
‘Prisons Make Us Safer’ is a necessary guide for all who are interested in learning about the cause and rise of mass incarceration and how we can dismantle it"

Pop-Ups (Rare Shopping Opportunities), Hot Dogs, Retail Therapy Guide! 4/7/2021

Things-To-Do-In-Beacon-Retail-Therapy.png
Remember this time last year? Mother's Day Weekend? Most everything was shut down, the COVID-19 numbers in New York were high and scary, and pictures of flowers just felt weirdly depressing because they were so beautiful, but the pandemic was wreaking havoc. Do you remember how the floral industry rallied to bring you online ordering and delivery? That was the beginning of the hustle that every business owner on Main Street went through, like they had never gone through before.

Having a moment of gratitude for where we are now, and are not forgetting where we were yesterday, and where people in other regions and countries are now. Thank you for supporting everyone as you have, and we know you are going to continue.

Just when you thought things couldn't get better, the Beacon Flea Market & the Beacon Farmers Market  are BACK! Check them out every Sunday - make a day out of it! Your day may start off with a brunch at one of the delicious restaurants along Main St , treasure hunting at the Beacon Flea Market, a trip to Dia: Beacon, a later lunch/early dinner at another fine Beacon restaurant, and to finish, a walk along the Scenic Hudson’s Long Dock Park.

PS. We updated our Summer Camp Guide (again) & registrations are bringing to open up! There's even one where a mermaid theme makes an appearance (Yanarella)!
ATTN: Caregivers & parents! Start browsing ALBB's Summer Camp Guide now! We organized it with age ranges, dates, and a link for more info so you can register easily. We also created this handy dandy schedule list for you to stay organized. It's a PDF template for your weekly planning!
SPONSORSHIPS: Advertisers are still welcome to participate! Parents want to know your social distance strategy, what your camp looks like, and why your camp is the best of the best!

  • Take a walk around your house for an overall inspection.
  • Keep those gutters clean.
  • Check and clean your windows.

Things-To-Do-In-Beacon-Retail-Therapy.png
Happy weekend! Can you believe it's going to be May!? You know what that means... more flowers, more beautiful trees, more hiking, outdoor dining, walks up & down Main St, safe picnics at Long Dock Park. So many fun things to do! And, so many fun things happening in-between! Plus, parklets are back! And in order to have a safe and successful indoor dining experience for everyone involved, including staff and patrons, several restaurants are opting to keep their windows and doors open. Read more about it here.

PS. Have you been keeping an eye on The Beacon Hood Chicken aka Bea Conhood-Chykn? Between today & tomorrow, her eggs, all named Christopher, are due to hatch. There are nine eggs, three are definitely fertile- one is a question mark (the shell is too dark to see), and four looks unlikely. We will know more as time goes on! Tune in here!

Regardless if you identify as a dog person or cat person, have a love for horses, or smaller animals you want to be sure your furry friends are protected at all costs. However, if your pet runs ill or your concern for their health is growing a trip to a vet’s office might break your bank. This financial burden is an unfortunate reality for many pet owners. If you’ve ever found yourself making the decision between your pet’s health and your financial stability consider enrolling in pet insurance. Our consultants would be more than happy to help you find a solution that makes your pet, yourself (and bank account!) happy and healthy.

From serious illnesses, broken legs, or concerning cough, regardless of the severity any vet visit can ring in a hefty bill. Be sure your pet is covered for the treatment needed with Pet Insurance. Typical cancer treatments, for example, can run $5,000. Pet insurance is there for you and your pet in these situations. Some pet insurances include Pet’s Place, ASPCA, Embrace, and Pet Plan-just to name a few. There are insurances that cover accidents only, accidents and illnesses, preventative policies to help your pet. Pet insurance often operates in a way that will reimburse you the bill of the vet, instead of providing deductibles. There also is typically an annual limit. If you have a lower annual limit, you will have a smaller monthly payment. To explain policies and insurance procedures be sure to stop by our office to speak with a representative about what coverage plan would best suit your needs as a pet owner.

If you worry about your pet’s future and health, protect them from the uncertainties of their world. Insure them long healthy life, starting now with the help of our team.

BINNACLE BOOKS

Special Message From Binnacle Books:
Chang-rae Lee, “My Year Abroad”
“Rich with commentary on Western attitudes, Eastern stereotypes, capitalism, global trade, mental health, parenthood, mentorship, and more, My Year Abroad is also an exploration of the surprising effects of cultural immersion—on a young American in Asia, on a Chinese man in America, and on an unlikely couple hiding out in the suburbs. Tinged at once with humor and darkness, electric with its accumulating surprises and suspense, My Year Abroad is a novel that only Chang-rae Lee could have written, and one that will be read and discussed for years to come.”

Cupcakes and the Retail Therapy Guide 3/19/2021

Happy Weekend To You!

We are going to kick this weekend newsletter off with a picture of...carrot cake cupcakes, because cupcakes are good and happy. These are from Homespun, and available to order online to reserve yours (we swiped 3 of them after taking this photo, so...)

Most importantly, however, we wanted to address Atlanta and what our Asian friends in Beacon are experiencing as reactions to this unfold. What hasn't been spoken about much locally is how friends whose families are from Japan, or China, or the Philippines or other areas are feeling, or what kind of encounters they have endured while walking on sidewalks since the pandemic started and a former president attempted to connect a pandemic with a region.

We are quietly hearing from our friends, and they are asking for support. They want to see their friends say supportive things in social media, and to denounce things like a police captain explaining that a murderer had a "bad day." That captain was later discovered to have posted his own belief of the region connection to the pandemic, and even supported t-shirts of it.

Not sure where to start? Try asking your friends where their families are from, to get more comfortable with regions. Next, listen to this webinar with Moraya Seeger DeGeare, a Beaconite who is Black, Japanese and white, and engages in talking about race issues in a safe space.

Renowned relationship therapist, Moraya Seeger DeGeare, MA, LMFT, specializes in Emotionally Focused Therapy in gender and race identification in one's self. While she herself is Black, Japanese and white, Moraya had not been that outspoken about race, outside of her private work with clients. This year has changed that. In this Tin Shingle TuneUp webinar, Moraya speaks with Tin Shingle and ALBB owner Katie Hellmuth Martin about how to talk about race out loud, when you don't know how to talk about it. While people want a safe space in which to practice speaking, others need to feel a safe space coming from silence.

Elementary School Opening Info and The Retail Therapy Guide - 3/5/2021

As we head into the weekend, the Beacon City School District announced today that they have been planning for and are anticipating a re-open of the Elementary Schools to a 4-day a week schedule for those who want it, starting in April. Remote-only will continue for those who want to remain at home, while the district is hiring an additional teacher to support remote-only children, according to the Reopening Slides presented by Superintendent Landahl.

Dr. Landahl mentioned that an increase in spread in virus had not occurred with the current in-person learning model, with safety measures put into place, like masking, social distancing and contact tracing. However, he stressed that "there has been an increase of mental health concerns among our students," citing a New York Times survey of scientists and doctors who study infectious disease in young children. Access Dr. Landahl's entire presentation here, where the plan is broken down into easy bullet points.

SPORTS: If you organize a kids sports program and want it listed in A Little Beacon Blog's Kids Sports Guide, please email us with registration information so that we can get it all in one place for parents and caregivers to utilize. Same goes for fundraisers for all schools, no matter how small or defined a fundraiser. This listing is free.

SPONSORS: We are looking for business sponsors for the Kids Sports Guide and Fundraising Guide. Sustaining sponsors allow us to pay our staff to keep this information current, and further promoted on ALBB's social media. Thank you for your consideration.

The Label Foundation Basketball Club Fundraiser
Day
: Now
Location: GoFundMe
The Label Foundation started in the summer of 2020, at the height of the protest marches in Beacon. One of the founding members is John Galloway Jr., who back then decided to run for a vacated seat on the the Beacon Board of Education, and was appointed. The Label Foundation started with a bunch of young men who you can meet here in little videos, and has been busy every since doing clothing drives and other service initiatives.

This fundraiser is to introduce their Basketball Club, which includes people from all walks of life together, especially inner-city and underprivileged kids who have not had the opportunity to participate in extracurricular activities within a safe environment for nearly a year. Players will be educated and mentored on academic topics, including early financial literacy, with formidable role models within the area, and civic engagement. Money raised goes to fees for tournaments, equipment, jerseys, and gym time.

Look At This Dog...Retail Therapy Guide 2/26/2021

Hello Beaconites!
And Hello Other People Visiting here!
Happy Weekend.

A couple things before we get to the good shopping, eating and donating that is in Beacon:
  • Rents are on the rise in Beacon, due in part to NYC friends moving here. Which is fine! Come on up. But. This real life Beaconite dog friend is kicking off our new series on Affordable Housing, and what that means. Outside of required "affordable housing" below market units required in buildings sometimes. Pictured here is his shocked expression at receiving the news that their rent was to be increased by 12% in a Beacon apartment. Other stories are in the article.
  • Driving. Not sure who is taking what liberties with driving like crazy people on Main Street, but we don't drive around public transportation buses on Main Street while they are servicing passengers, nor do we do U-Turns anywhere. If you see my car doing it - check who is in the driver seat. Could be a hubby. If you're from NYC or NJ, please know that Beacon streets don't follow the same rules.
Classes and Camps: Spring is coming, you can feel it, right? We'll get more snow, but wheels are turning on how to plan for Spring and Summer. If you run a business that offers classes, ALBB really wants to list them for you in our Kids + Adult Classes Guides! Main Street businesses get a basic listing for free (just address and web link). As part of our advertising program starting at $100/month, businesses can have their classes with days, times and descriptions listed out. It will be one of the best marketing investments you make, and you'll be contributing to this publication, which allows us to keep publishing. Thank you to our sponsors now!

Sample Sale at New Form Perspective
Day
: Last Days: Saturday & Sunday, February 27-28, 2021
Location: NFP: Studio, 457 Main St, Beacon, NY
The @nfpstudio Sample Sale is real and no joke! Beacon is fortunate to have NFP localized in Beacon, even though they are a coveted fashion brand popular in NYC and larger markets. Located for years next to Joe’s Irish Pub, they gave homage to the pub when it closed and have been hosting their sample sale there. Open several days per week, this is your last weekend to shop the sale in the former pub.

Their mission is: "As a collective, we vow to bring people from all walks of life together in order to guide the youth in the right direction. We will complete this mission by giving back to our community, pushing the envelope creatively, using our platform to express positive content, and leading by example through our brotherhood."

This fundraiser is to introduce their Basketball Club! "We have vowed to bring people from all walks of life together to guide the youth in the right direction- and that’s what we’re doing. Due to the times, inner-city and underprivileged kids have not had the opportunity to participate in extracurricular activities within a safe environment for nearly a year.

"Here’s what we’re up to, providing an opportunity to participate in safe, welcoming, and inclusive youth development. Our players will be educated and mentored on academic topics, ranging from early financial literacy, formidable role models within the area to civic engagement. We need your help making this endeavor successful.

"Our team necessities are fees for tournaments, equipment, jerseys, and gym time."

Annual Soup For Greens Fundraiser
Day
: Sunday, February 28, 2021
Time: 10am-2pm
Location: Beacon Farmers Market, 413 Main Street, Memorial Building
From the Beacon Farmers Market: "We are so delighted to have Virginia Piazza Pottery as a regular and devoted supporter of Soup4Greens! Her work is well-loved in our community. Come find and buy her bowls this Sunday as part of the generous donations we have received for this event.

"Curious as to why all of this matters? Last summer, between the Beacon and Newburgh farmers’ markets, more than $2300 worth of fresh, free produce made it into the hands of people who need it, on top of what they were able to purchase using Snap or their expendable income.

"This effort was made possible by the #Greens4Greens program created by Green Geen Beacon and Common Ground Farm and this is the program that will directly benefit from every dollar made on Sunday. Fresh food is a universal right. Please help us bring much needed nourishment to our community."

A message from @binnaclebooks, "Just as this season is full of spring’s potential, one might think of these shelves like the ground in late winter, scattered with slumbering things and things soon to sprout. They hardly even need your tending, just a little participation. They thrive on your willingness to connect with the narratives that others have laid out at other times, some remote, some recent. One might look at these shelves and think: so much is inevitable and we’re in it, all of it, together."

BINNACLE BOOKS

321 Main Street, Beacon
Brontez Purnell, “100 Boyfriends”

“Transgressive, foulmouthed, and brutally funny, Brontez Purnell’s ‘100 Boyfriends’ is a revelatory spiral into the imperfect lives of queer men desperately fighting the urge to self-sabotage. As they tiptoe through minefields of romantic, substance-fueled misadventure—from dirty warehouses and gentrified bars in Oakland to desolate farm towns in Alabama—Purnell’s characters strive for belonging in a world that dismisses them for being Black, broke, and queer. In spite of it—or perhaps because of it—they shine.

Armed with a deadpan wit, Purnell finds humor in even the darkest of nadirs with the peerless zeal, insight, and horniness of a gay punk messiah. Together, the slice-of-life tales that writhe within ‘100 Boyfriends’ are an inimitable tour of an unexposed queer underbelly. Holding them together is the vision of an iconoclastic storyteller, as fearless as he is human.”

We have got some SNOW! And there may be more on the way so here's some friendly reminders from Antalek & Moore as you head out and shovel:

*Push rather than lift. Pushing the snow with the shovel instead of lifting can help reduce the strain on your body. Bend your knees and use your legs when possible.
*Choose your shovel wisely. Ergonomically-designed shovels can help reduce the amount of bending you have to do.
*Hit the pause button. Pace yourself and be sure to take frequent breaks. Consider taking a break after 20 to 30 minutes of shoveling, especially when the snow is wet.
*Wear layers. Dress in layers and remove them as you get warm to help maintain a comfortable body temperature.
*Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated while shoveling.

Valentine's Day Flowers; Where To Get Them In Beacon

It’s the big weekend of LOVE! 💕

Love is a theory and a feeling and exists in many forms. DO get yourself some love, and treat others with love. Could be something purchased, or really, just hanging with your loved one and doing something they love to make it really special. Give a wink. Give a nod. Give a flower. High five your pod.

As a kid, I took myself to the bookstore every Valentine’s Day to buy myself a new book. With dreams of flowers of course. If you want a flower, you need to give a flower. How else will the flowers get there? If they have any left, you have Mountain Laurel Florist, Raven Rose & Batts Florist in Beacon. And one on Spring Street on the other side of the creek.

This bouquet is from Flora Good Times and is part of their subscription program. Subscriptions are a great way to support a business, and a good way to make sure something shows up without you having to remember. But the recipient will remember!

About Last Saturday Night 😍 Thawing Out ⛄The Retail Therapy Guide - 2/5/2021

Everyone!
Are you dug out? That snowfall was intense! Maybe you are following the snow-removal methods of your old-timer neighbors now. When once they looked suspect: "What is he doing with that ice-pick? Did we move to Tom Hanks 'The Burbs'?"

No, Friends, this is you getting smarter with your snow-removal method by removing while the sun is out, before the 2' feet of snow becomes ice, or the slush becomes ice (the Slush Method has been tried before, and fails because it freezes in place like that).

Thank you for your patience on this weekend newsletter. We delayed because we have been working on a feature story on a new Black business in Beacon and Poughkeepsie since before Christmas, and wanted to get this to you on a Saturday.

Saturday nights scan be magical for business stories, and this is a good one. YOU helped this business raise $1,000 in one weekend when their only asset - an old snow blower - broke. ALBB readers did that!

Every local and national bank they went to denied them. But you didn't Beacon Community. It was unexpected and incredible. Because of you, Blue Green Lawns bought a snow blower from Brett's Hardware, and cleared snow for at least 10 families in Beacon. They are planning for the next storm. Bank lending to Black family businesses may be hard, and this article explores why - to see if systemic racism or oppression is involved for how the Black community can gain access to credit. Read about their denial journey, and their future plans.

Have you been following the GameStop stock drama that started with people at the online forum destination Reddit banding together to buy it and drive the price up 300%? Thereby impacting investors who were normally shorting (betting against) the stock? The strategy trickled over to AMC, the movie theater chain that was sinking during the pandemic, raised some money through debt, and now may have some cash from the suddenly soaring stock to erase some debt. One of their investors sold the stock, netting AMC $600 million. Some investor types are not pleased; some media covering finance is confused and concerned. How do you feel? Also, check out these funny tweets/memes coming out of this episode. And we don't recommend buying this stock. Just following the story. Do your research always and seek guidance before investing.

Where's Bernie; Retail Therapy Guide 1/22/2021

Happy Weekend, Everyone!

May this one be busy and bustling for our business friends, and for you entertainment and enrichment enthusiasts.

Bernie showed up in Beacon while the Internet reset after the Inauguration and memes of him popped up all over, like this one of Bernie in front of the man in the tumbler hat (in the building a block down from Yanarella School Of Dance). Community member Michelle Rivas created it, and ALBB reader Brianne McDowell sent it in as a Reader Tip. Michelle is a librarian at Beacon's Howland Public Library, and being the dutiful resource that she is, let us know that anyone can create a Bernie meme here!

Then, Bernie came to the mats! The yoga mats of ALBB's Managing Editor Marilyn Perez, promoting her "Digital Slow Flow" and "Digital Power Beats" yoga class on Fridays for Firefly Power Yoga. See ALBB's Fitness Guide in the Business Directory for more digital or in-person fitness outlets, like Zoned Fitness, Studio Beacon, Beacon Pilates, Evolution Grappling Academy, and many more.

Poet Amanda Gorman reciting captivated everyone this Inauguration, with several lines and phrases impacting people differently. We will leave you with one of our favorites, that speaks to the take-away from the past year, the take-away of which continues.

We've braved the belly of the beast,
We've learned that quiet isn't always peace,
and the norms and notions
of what just is
isn't always just-ice.
And yet the dawn is ours
before we knew it.
Somehow we do it.
Somehow we've weathered and witnessed
a nation that isn't broken,
but simply unfinished.

These days...in a pandemic, racial reckoning, and time of social and legislative change, staying silent as a business is a move you may not want to make. Because tensions got pushed so far (Capitol Building), to not say anything at this point, is saying something. At this point, silence as a business from a branding perspective and as a business individual, is saying a lot. Louder than you think. This interview with Beacon-based Moraya Seeger DeGeare, a light-skinned woman who identifies as Black, and is a grandaughter of Pete and Toshi Seeger, answers many questions you may have, but were too quiet to ask. This conversation is gentle, fun, and revealing. Moraya reflected: "If there's no acknowledgement...I'm talking just a simple re-share...so I'm not talking big statements here...that says to me that I'm not welcome there."

MLK; A Legal Note; And The Retail Therapy Guide; Retail Therapy Guide 1/15/2021

The life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. will be observed on Monday, January 18, 2021. During this time where you may have more down time, here is a suggested way you can observe Martin Luther King Day: with a book. By Martin Luther King, Jr. ALBB provided a book list with links here. You can always buy from our local book store, Binnacle Books, or borrow from the Howland Public Library.

If you have never read a book by Martin Luther King, Jr., this is a great time to start! If you have read a book or all of his books, you might already be turning the cover for another deep dive read.

The light is not out for the annual MLK Day Parade presented by the Springfield Baptist Church and the Beacon Sloop Club (via Pete Seeger before his passing)! Instead, you can participate from home  for the "Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Virtual Zoom Celebration on Monday, January 18, 2021 from 11am - 1pm. The theme is "Keep The Flame Alive" and all are welcome.

The City of Beacon published an article from NobelPrize.org about his life at their website here.

"WHEREAS, on January 6, 2021, there was a violent attack on the U.S. Capitol and on the U.S. Congress, described succinctly by USA Today: “As a shocked nation watched..., a pro-Trump mob battled police, broke into the U.S. Capitol, and sent members of Congress fleeing as lawmakers were counting Electoral College votes.... Now, five people are dead, including a U.S. Capitol police officer.” And

WHEREAS, this attack on the U.S. Capitol and Congress was caused by the current President, as stated by third-ranking House Republican Liz Cheney, “The President of the United States summoned this mob, assembled the mob, and lit the flame of this attack. Everything that followed was his doing.... There has never been a greater betrayal by a President of the United States of his office and his oath to the Constitution.” And...

BINNACLE BOOKS

321 Main Street, Beacon
Quite a timely book recommendation, when, according to Buzz Feed News, "the acting leader of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement abruptly resigned on Wednesday, just two weeks into the job after the agency’s previous director also stepped down unexpectedly in December, according to a source with knowledge of the situation."

Copies of Natascha Elena Uhlmann, “Abolish ICE” now available at Binnacle Books. Written with passion and eloquence, this concise philippic provides moving examples of the abuses that occur under the cold eye of ICE and sets out convincing arguments for getting rid of it. "Perhaps the greatest value of history is that it reveals to us how contingent so much of the world really is. Institutions that seem unyielding and hierarchies that seem immutable reveal themselves to be products of chance or ideology."

TIN SHINGLE
"How can businesses answer the current state of #allthefeels during this time of racial discomfort?" Or is the better question, "Should businesses be making statements? Or will it alienate their audience or customer base?" Pete Seeger fans will enjoy this interview with his granddaughter, Moraya Seeger DeGreare, who speaks with Tin Shingle's owner and A Little Beacon Blog publisher Katie, to wade through that discomfort to discuss the issues. Moraya is a person who has been a gentle but firm voice during the time of the protests. If you haven't put anything about the civil rights messages in your business branding, then this would be a great TuneUp webinar for you to listen to as you debate that. Moraya and Katie are fun and fresh - bubbly as ever! It's a safe space for you to check out.
