Snow Scrapers and Other Things :: Retail Therapy Guide 1/28/2022

Beacon! Before you think of not venturing out tomorrow because of the forecasted blizzard, just remember that our retail friends are very good at shoveling out and clearing sidewalks so that you can come. Pro Tip: You may want to walk everywhere because it's easier, so get your snow boots on! Parking will be...why. Just walk! If you can walk. Anyone who has lived at one time in NYC will know that we walk everywhere. Wheelchair riders will need help, so reach out to friends in need. For those Beacon locals who have cars and driveways: a reminder to not park your car on the street. The plow trucks need to barrel through to clear streets. And it's a Beacon rule that when there is more than 2" of snow, you can't park on the street. You can park in the free municipal lots, which do have new signage so that you can find them better. You will need to dig your car out and move your car within a period of time. SNOW SHOVELING TIPS: Don't Put Street Snow On Sidewalk: If your car is parked in the street and you need to dig it out, don't shovel the snow onto the sidewalk. Your neighbor will be clearing the sidewalk. Citations: At a recent City Council Meeting, the current City Administrator told residents to shovel their sidewalks within a time-frame, as the city might be coming out to issue citations. Not clear on who that personnel would be, since they are so busy plowing the streets, inspecting buildings, and doing new speed traffic duty, but he's taking notice. Elderly: Offer to help your elderly neighbors. Even the neighbors who don't seem elderly, but really are 65 and could use your sprightly energy! Cold Weather: If you don't shovel all of the way, the snow might turn to slush and then freeze, like it did for Beacon's first real snowfall for 2022. Then you are stuck with mounds of ice. So frustrating. Reward Yourself: With hot chocolate from Beacon Bread, wine, chocolate cake, a fresh candle from Beacon Mercantile, anything. Shoveling is a lot of work! Retail Therapy Guide 1/7/2022

WooHoo! We typed the New Year of 2022 correctly into the subject line! Hope you had a great week, and that some of you are enjoying this Snow Day, Beacon's first school closure of the year. Last Sunday to start the big week back to school, the district distributed test kits, and on Monday reported on results. On Wednesday, Dutchess County alerted the media about the second limited supply shipment of test kits and masks to municipalities. On Thursday, the City of Beacon distributed their share at the Howland Public Library, which were gone in a few hours. There is discussion of making the next distribution at night for commuters. Giving an extra hug to all of the teachers and to any employees who are out sick with COVID-19 right now. Sending you on-the-mend vibes. Giving an extra squeeze to health care workers who are showing up to provide life-saving services during this pandemic, amid staffing shortages. Thank You. Many in-person events have been switching to virtual this week. Even the Beacon Farmers Market is closed this Sunday for upcoming weather (so order your eggs, beef, lamb and chicken now from Farmer Carrie of Eggberts Free Range Farm so she can deliver free to you!). Seems like a great time to snuggle in, order out, and stream Governor Hochul's State of the State to learn about her plan to once again allow Cocktails To Go. This Sunday is the Celebration of Life Ceremony Funeral for "Scout" Rene Vivo, the iconic Beaconite who touched so many lives - even silently and without words - who was stabbed on Christmas Day. His family has been in touch with ALBB to get the invitation to you about his ceremony. They fundraised from the community to pay for his final wishes. His rational is that the apartments can rent for a low price because they are in theory "small." Members of the public have been showing up to demand that the focus be on passing a law called Good Cause Eviction, as another layer of protection for renters. More and more, renters are being pushed out of Beacon, replaced by those who can pay higher prices. Say the organizers: "The City has been ignoring the housing crisis. WOWZERS...Did You See The Light?...Retail Therapy Guide 12/3/2021

Were you in the dark last night? Hopefully your power and heat have returned! On Thursday evening, while some people still had their Hanukkah candles lit, some in Beacon lost power when "a burst of wind toppled a tree onto the pole on Beekman Street, breaking the pole and causing it to fall," said Media Relations Director John Maserjian when A Little Beacon Blog inquired for details. Those familiar with the sculpture art Beacon 3D will recognize the art of Erica Hauser next to the fallen tree. ALBB has more details and photos from the day after, which you can read about here. While this was power outage for several due to weather, it's a useful moment to think about people who cannot afford to pay their electric bill, when they experience the power being shut off. When that happens, it's a terrifying feeling as darkness falls, and a family sits in the dark with no heat. Taking a moment to remember those who need help and advocacy during this season. The fine people at Antalek and Moore have been reminding us to stay prepared for power outages with backup batteries and placing flashlights in places we can remember them. Central Hudson reminds us to stay away from power outages, as live wires can "arc" as they fall, as they did on Beekman Street. Stay safe. Hi!!! Happy Hanukkah! Who know we'd be talking about catalytic converters at Thanksgiving? One ALBB reader had theirs stolen from underneath their car (it's part of the exhaust system, like what the muffler is a part of) the night before Thanksgiving and wrote in to ALBB with a request to spread awareness. After reading the article, another Beaconite wrote in about 2 catalytic converters stolen from cars in their parking lot. Meanwhile, a relative from Kansas City at the ALBB dinner table had just been talking about it trending in their neighborhood. This is a $2,000-$3,000 repair job if it happens to you, and it's a type of theft that is spiking during the pandemic because of 3 valuable metals located inside of the car part. Today at 1pm, all are welcome to the Family Day at the Masjid Ar Rashid Islamic Teaching Center, the mosque next door to Beacon Natural and across the street from the Post Office. During a blip of this week's City Council Meeting, Mayor Lee Kyriacou mentioned that there is a tree lighting ceremony on Saturday, November 27th at Pohill Park from 4-6pm. The Beacon Farmers Market won approval from City Council and the City Administrator to remain open outside all year. They will continue to operate from the DMV parking lot, which has proved an open and accessible place for people to pass through and congregate in during the pandemic where people continue to avoid being indoors if possible. Veterans and Main Street :: Retail Therapy Guide 11/21/2021

All 3 media outlets covering Beacon (Beacon Free Press, Highlands Current, ALBB) stopped and focused on the new mural on the Dutchess County DMV building on Main Street that is thanking veterans. It is a daily reminder to smile, say thank you, outreach to a veteran if you know one or know how. In the Beacon Free Press version of this coverage, catch an interview with the muralist as she paints it. Beacon Free Press Columnist and Veteran Tom Zurhellen writes enthusiastically almost every week about how to help veterans. In this week's column, he points out that nearly 40,000 veterans are homeless (the Military Times cites 37,252). In Beacon, one might not know who is a homeless veteran as they walk by someone. So as you walk by the Memorial Building especially, give someone a sunny "Hello." An easy way to help make veterans in this area more comfortable is to donate to their food pantry in Castle Point. Super Happy :: Let's Do This Climate And Save Ourselves :: Retail Therapy Guide 10/22/2021

In honor of Climate Solutions Week from October 17-24 held throughout the Hudson Valley to raise awareness and educate citizens on solutions to climate change everyone can support, we are bringing back an old article we did in 2020 called "The Recylcing Market That Crashed," which highlighted China's change in what they accepted as "clean" or "dirty" recycling from the world. Thanks to the change in their acceptance of what they would recycle, (ex: a dirty yogurt container or wet newspaper was rejected), lots of recycling was sitting around in trash piles. The Beacon Green Coalition and the Climate Smart Beacon Committee of the City of Beacon took an initiative to educate the community on what recycling was good, and what ruined a "batch." In other words, what might contaminate an entire can of recylcing if you threw Capri Sun juice foils into it, or plastic bags from a store. Good news! Climate Smart Beacon sent their Fall newsletter, and reported that Beaconites have a 92% success rate of submitting good recycling items (that means you clean them, and don't put in wet items). According to their newsletter: "The ReCommunity facility on Fishkill Ave in Beacon recently provided an inside look at how it sorts our recycling and prepares it for sale. Plastics are processed in the US – ReCommunity says plastic #1-7 are all recycled. Paper is exported, and glass is sent to Pennsylvania for recycling. ReCommunity had compliments for Beacon’s recycling habits – only 8% of collected items are rejected, which they said is “phenomenal.” As for "filmy" plastic bags, like bread or english muffin sleeves: you can put those into a filmy sleeve collection bin at Hudson Valley Brewery and Rite Aid. You can bring batteries to Best Buy in Poughkeepsie. Way to go, you! It's Homecoming Weekend in Beacon. If you saw or heard a beautiful display of fireworks on Thursday night, those were part of the Homecoming vibes, and were launched after the Varsity Boys Soccer game on the new field behind the Beacon High School. Friday evening is the Football game and the weather is fine. So fine that people are driving with a little too much enthusiasm. An accident occurred on Route 52 on Thursday near the Corrections driveway and Old Glenham Road. So be careful! Don't pass on the left, and don't do any U-Turns. There are sometimes a U-Turn a minute on Main Street (we've timed it). We know *you* wouldn't do that, so tell your friends!
