Happy Second Saturday, Beacon! We hope you get out and about - socially distanced, of course - to enjoy this (probably) last warm day for a while. It’s perfect weather for strolling Main Street and peeking into galleries, or enjoying the art mounted in their storefront windows.

The pace of art openings has slowed a bit compared with the past couple of months. Still, you’ll find new shows at Clutter Gallery (they have two openings!), Twins Barbershop, No. 3 Reading Room and Photo Book Works, the Howland Cultural Center and Bau Gallery (where several artists are showing).

Shows continuing from last month include exhibitions at Mother Gallery, Parts & Labor and Clarkson University’s Beacon Institute, along with the longer-running shows at Dia, Marion Royael, Morphicism and others. We've got it all covered in Beacon’s most comprehensive Art Gallery Guide.

This month’s Second Saturday Art Gallery Guide is sponsored by No. 3 Reading Room and Photo Book Works, at 469 Main Street, down toward the east end of Main Street, where you’ll find not just rotating exhibits, but cool collections of handmade books that the public is encouraged to peruse. Owner Paulette Myers-Rich has found new veins of creativity, coming up with ways to engage readers and consumers of art via her storefront windows.

Second Saturday greetings, Beacon! Somehow we find ourselves in September - time is a funny thing these days, emerging from the cocoon of “stay home” and the urgent acts of speaking out in the Hudson Valley. Make sure you’re taking good care of yourself - and one another.

There are at least seven new art shows opening this month around town, but other galleries are still taking extra precautions to protect staff and visitors, and they're remaining closed for now. In between those ends of the spectrum, there are beautiful window installations to look at (like the one at No. 3 Reading Room and Photo Book Works, over on the west end of Main Street).

Peruse our Second Saturday Art Gallery Guide for details on all these shows, as well as tips for where to grab a bite while you're out. Wherever you find yourself, give everyone a hula hoop (or more!) of space and wear your mask!

New shows have popped up at Mother Gallery, Parts & LaborClutter Magazine GalleryHudson Beach Glass (featuring Beacon Open Studios!), Clarkson University, Beacon Institute for Rivers and Estuaries (welcome back!), the Howland Cultural Center, and BAU: Beacon Artist Union. Shows continue at Dia Art Foundation (weekend tickets are extremely limited) and Marion Royael Gallery.

A giant thank you to BeaconArts for promoting this day in our city for years, and thanks to the sponsors of A Little Beacon Blog, who make it possible for us to share the goings-on around town. August 2020 continues the return, kind of, of Second Saturday. Eight venues have in-person openings, whether on windows or in very strictly spaced indoors. Clockwise from top right: Nancy Woogen in the Howland Cultural Center’s annual member-artist show; Carla Goldberg’s FIZZ at Bau Gallery; Slippage as Form, works by Edwin Torres in the storefront windows of No.3 Reading Room and Photo Book Works; one of Karl LaLonde’s trees paintings at RiverWinds Gallery, who will close at the end of this month; and a creature from They Came From Planet Rainbow Sparkles at Clutter Gallery, one of three shows opening there.

It’s Second Saturday, and more galleries around town are tiptoeing into holding in-person events. Last month, five Beacon venues celebrated (re)opening with live indoor events, and this month it looks like we’re up to eight (Dia, Clutter, RiverWinds, Marion Royael, Bau, Howland Cultural Center, Mother, Parts & Labor), as well as the big windows installation at No. 3 Reading Room and Photo Book Works. If you do head out to Main Street, please, please follow each gallery’s rules about masks and distancing.

While galleries were closed, we focused on online exhibitions, social justice/protest art (there’s another protest and evening of action in Beacon), and taking care of the general health of those close to us. But if you plan to keep staying home, local galleries (especially Dia, Mother, and Clutter) are offering lots of digital alternatives to explore. We've got it all covered in Beacon’s most comprehensive Art Gallery Guide.

The biggest news this month is the impending closure of RiverWinds Gallery, Beacon’s longest-running gallery highlighting dozens of Hudson Valley artists over 17 years. See our writeup of the gallery and its backstory in our article here.

July's Second Saturday Art Openings (Yes, Really) - A Cautious Tiptoe Toward Normalcy

July 2020 brings the return, kind of, of Second Saturday. Seven venues have in person openings, whether on windows or in very strictly spaced indoors. Clockwise from top right: Mr. Kum Kum’s Silent Killer at Clutter Gallery, one of three shows there; Mother Altar by Chie Fueki at Mother Gallery, in the windows or by appointment; My Way, Gee’s Bend quilting and abstract works at Parts & Labor; an entry in Help Feed Beacon, a fundraiser and show at Bau Gallery; and Slippage as Form, works by Edwin Torres in the storefront windows of No.3 Reading Room and Photo Book Works.

It’s Second Saturday, when in the Before Times, Beacon would throw a big party with lots of art and wine and snacks. It was really fun. But it’s been a few months since in-person things mostly closed down (thanks, corona) and we’ve focused on online exhibitions, social justice/protest art, and taking care of the general health of those close to us.

So, to be honest, the seven in-person exhibitions this week caught us at A Little Beacon Blog a little off guard. Some shows are windows-based (Mother Gallery, No.3 Reading Room and Photo Book Works); others are indoors, with strict plans and rules on capacity (Parts & Labor, Clutter, Bau, Howland Cultural Center, RiverWinds Gallery). The shows do look pretty neat, but if you plan to keep staying home (the forecast isn’t great), local galleries are offering lots of digital alternatives to explore. We've got it all covered in Beacon’s most comprehensive Art Gallery Guide.

Antalek & Moore Confirms Progressive Insurance Is Open To Flexibility Regarding Billing During COVID-19

PUBLISHED: Wednesday, March 18, 2020

In this time of coronavirus/COVID-19, people are looking at their bill pile, as they socially distance or deal with any emerging health situation, especially if they were one of the many people in this country who were forced to temporarily close their business or leave a job. Among those everyday bills: insurance. A Little Beacon Blog reached out to Susan Antalek Pagones, of Beacon’s Antalek & Moore insurance agency to see if they had heard anything, and indeed they had.

“It is a case-by-case situation,” Susan says. “Currently, Progressive has stated they will work with customers regarding bills but we need to call them directly on behalf of customers. I am awaiting answers from other companies, but we are at their mercy as they decide how they want to handle.” Here is Progressive’s full statement about the position they are taking, and developing in an ongoing way.

Pictured here is Susan in her socially distanced position, behind the door. Antalek & Moore is currently closed to the public, but is allowing customers to open the first of two doors to pay a bill to whatever insurance carrier they use. The staff is inside, socially distanced from each other.

Editor’s Note: Antalek & Moore is a sponsor of A Little Beacon Blog, but this article is totally unrelated to their campaign. Because we know them and work with them so often, they were a quick source to go to as we pursued this story. Additionally, we have always tried explaining what an insurance agency does, compared with directly dealing with the insurer company . This seemed like a pretty good example!

March 2020 Art Gallery Guide to Second Saturday in Beacon, NY - On Hold

Published Date: Saturday, March 14, 2020

Once things get back to normal, you’ll have an extra-lot of art to catch up on. Some of the shows that were set to open on Second Saturday, March 14 (clockwise from top right): Alaina Enslen at RiverWinds Gallery; Carl Craig’s soundscape at Dia Beacon; Rick Rogers at Hudson Beach Glass; Kaiju group show at Clutter Magazine Gallery; and the sixth annual CoMFY show at the Howland Public Library.

Well, it’s Second Saturday weekend, and normally we wish all Beaconites and visitors a happy one. But there’s nothing normal about this month’s edition. As you’ve surely heard by now, the spread of COVID-19 (aka coronavirus) and efforts to knock it down are leading to lots of cancellations, in the interests of public health and not overwhelming medical facilities. Dutchess County government issued guidelines Friday that prohibit gatherings of more than 20 people for at least the next five days.

With luck, hard work, and patience by all, the public health emergency will pass soon, and we can get back to the spirit-soothing effects of visiting galleries and creating community. We’re keeping our comprehensive Second Saturday Art Gallery Guide live and updated, so you can keep tabs on all the artists and galleries we love, and get right back into supporting them as soon as is safe for everyone to do so. Even if we can’t have the usual openings, with luck we’ll be able to enjoy the exhibitions at each venue.

Beacon art venues with postponed or close notices as of 3/13 (check the individual venue for specifics):
Dia Beacon: Closed until further notice.
Clutter Gallery: Closed for the Kaiju Kanibal opening; online-only exhibition will happen.
Gallery at Beacon Institute for Rivers and Estuaries (Clarkson University): Closed until further notice.
Howland Public Library: We Persist! CoMFY show reception is canceled, but the library remains open.
No. 3 Reading Room and PhotoBookWorks: Closed for now, until this passes.
Mother Gallery: March 21 Jenny Morgan opening canceled; gallery closed until further notice.

Take care of yourselves and one another!

Happy Second Saturday weekend, Beacon! In between the many musical events happening this weekend, take some time to pause and reflect on the quieter arts. Get comprehensive Beacon gallery listings in one place in our handy Guide right here.

February is Black History Month, and two exhibitions honor that. At the Howland Public Library, the Southern Dutchess NAACP is showcasing historical art, and ties local figures with the ongoing civil rights movement. At the Howland Cultural Center, check out art in a variety of media by African American artists from around the Hudson Valley. Elsewhere, new exhibitions are opening at Parts & Labor, Clutter Magazine Gallery, RiverWinds Gallery, No. 3 Reading Room and Photo Book Works, and Bau Gallery. Two talks today at Dia:Beacon include the artists themselves: Barry Le Va and Mel Bochner. This isn’t scheduled again until Friday, February 14, but is notable and worth seeking out by appointment: Theo Ganz Studio’s exhibition of Inuit stonecut prints. Find detailed descriptions of these shows and so many more in our Second Saturday Art Gallery Guide!

Thank you to No. 3 Reading Room and Photo Book Works for sponsoring this Guide. Thank you to BeaconArts for promoting the arts and our little city for more than 15 years. Big, big thanks to the sponsors of A Little Beacon Blog, who make all of this possible! And thank you, readers, for supporting the businesses that support us.

The first Second Saturday of the year is a busy one! Clockwise from top right: Thomas Van Winkle’s exquisitely cut paper art at Oak Vino Wine Bar; Jo Ann Chaus in Sympathetic Eye at the Howland Cultural Center; Evan Turk at Clarkson University’s Beacon Institute for Rivers and Estuaries; Casey Inch at Industrial Arts Brewing Co.’s taproom out on Route 52; and Aaren Vittoria Connolly’s many media, including paintings, at Big Mouth Coffee Roasters.

Happy Second Saturday weekend, Beacon! You might expect the first #2Sat of 2020 to be sleepy, but it's actually quite busy! A couple of galleries are mostly hibernating (including Mother Gallery and No. 3 Reading Room and Photo Book Works; call them for details) but other venues (Beacon Historical Society, Bank Square Coffeehouse, Big Mouth Coffee Roasters and Oak Vino Wine Bar) have surprise shows to make up for it. Looking to plan your itinerary? We’ve got the whole roundup in our Second Saturday Art Gallery Guide.

Art abounds! Some highlights (clockwise from top right): Thomas Van Winkle's exquisitely cut paper; group show of portraiture at the Howland Cultural Center; Evan Turk at Clarkson University, Beacon Institute for Rivers and Estuaries; new paintings and works on paper from Casey Inch; and the many media of Aaren Vittoria Connolly at Big Mouth Coffee Roasters. There’s so much more, stretching from the train station to the mountain, including closing receptions at Catalyst Gallery and Bannerman Island Gallery.

Some of the art gallery happenings for December 2019, clockwise from top right: a figurine by Little Lazies in Clutter Magazine Gallery’s Gift-Wrapped; Maria Lago packs Studio 502 with new paintings in Ideograph Materica; RiverWinds Gallery has many, many Hudson Valley artists but is spotlighting ceramic vessels like this mug from Lynn isaacson; Beacon Historical Society opens its vault of vintage holiday ephemera, with cameos from long-running Beacon businesses; and closing weekend for the work of video art pioneer Shigeko Kubota at Mother Gallery.

Happy Second Saturday, Beacon! Don't let dreary weather keep you at home. Rather, head out to Main Street (and well beyond) to enjoy one of our favorite Second Saturdays of the year. At least 10 brand-new exhibitions are opening, almost as many are continuing, and one show, at Mother Gallery, is closing. New venue alert! Daniel Aubry Gallery and Industrial Arts Brewing Company have openings this month. Get all of the details here in Beacon's most comprehensive Second Saturday Art Gallery Guide.

The big theme this month seems to be diverse group shows of small-scale works, often from Hudson Valley artists, at Clutter Magazine Gallery, Catalyst Gallery, RiverWinds Gallery, BAU: Beacon Artist Union and Bannerman Island Gallery. These shows are a great way to learn about lots of artists, find styles you like, maybe pick up a ready-to-gift piece for a loved one, or even jump on a New Year's resolution to support the arts locally by choosing something for your own collection.

Speaking of supporting the arts locally - big thanks goes out to BeaconArts for their tireless work around town over the years. Happy Second Saturday weekend, Beacon! We're diving head-first into the cozy, bundled-up season. Keep warm by moving briskly among the art galleries! Up and down Main Street, and points beyond, get inspired by at least 17 openings (and a gallery closing - but you can bring home a piece from there!). Get all the details in Beacon's most comprehensive Second Saturday Guide.

Jeffrey Terreson Fine Art, who opened a gallery in Beacon in 2016, has decided to move it closer to his home in Westchester. Beacon's loss is potentially your gain; he's trying to move as little inventory as possible, so there's a big sale at the gallery this weekend. While you're on that end of town, wrap yourself in the warm words of No.3 Reading Room and Photo Book Works right next door.

A new art spot in Beacon is live, with Jo Rigol's work at King + Curated! Closing soon: The Beacon Photography Group's Vintage exhibition is in its last days at the Howland Public Library, and Global Art Museum's first show, Eustatia, is wrapping up soon, so make sure you at least see these!

Thanks to BeaconArts for all the work that goes into producing Second Saturday. And thanks to the galleries and shops that host art!
