Spirit Of Beacon Day On Sunday; The Retail Therapy Guide - 9/25/2020

Everyone!

It's Spirit of Beacon Day this weekend! With a city-wide drive-by parade on Sunday! That's right - pandemic birthday party style. The Spirit of Beacon Day Committee has been hard at work imagining how to have a festive day for the 43rd year, and select organizations have begun decorating their cars. Details on how the day works are listed below.

It should be noted that the Spirit of Beacon Day started after racial unrest between Beacon students and the community in 1977. Many organizations came together to figure out how to address the discomfort, and it was decided that people needed to come together to get to know each other better and listen to one another. Read an older newspaper article about it here.

The Jewish community will observe Yom Kippur on Sunday at sundown, the day of atonement. You can read about how the Beacon Hebrew Alliance has been observing in alternative ways during the pandemic, which included kayaks at one point.

We Made It! Retail Therapy Guide - 9/18/2020

We did it! Beacon made it through the first week of school, being one of the few districts who is trying the Hybrid system of 2 days at school in person, and 2 days at home. Free meals for all children are prepared and provided by the district Food Services team (funded by the USDA through Dec. 31, 2020), and teachers are creating their own systems of working with their kids. Technological glitches happen, will always happen, and organizational systems will be reworked once they leave paper and are in practice.

Some families who opted for Hybrid changed their minds for health or logistic reasons to be 100% Home, and some families put children into different schools entirely.

As a community, and in the name of public school for all, we are figuring it out. So here is an all-caps HIGH-FIVE to those of you who are knee-deep in it. You deserve extra Retail Therapy this weekend!

TIN SHINGLE
Tin Shingle has launched a new initiative:  "Leave A Review Tuesday"
Tin Shingle is ALBB's sister company, and teaches businesses how to get the word out. As we hear from our small business friends of all sizes, we hear how damaging - or heartbreaking - a scathing online review can be. It cuts to the heart. So every Tuesday, Tin Shingle encourages its newsletter subscribers and social media followers to pick 1 business and leave a good review for them. It's easy to rant and rave. It's hard to remember to speak with positive thoughts.
PS: This Tuesday, if you have kids, email anyone in your district to say "Thank You. You're doing a great job. I know you are trying your best."

Happening This Weekend - 9/11/2020

THE SECOND SATURDAY GUIDE
Edited and Written By: Catherine Sweet

It’s a somber time, full of reflection but also action. Still dealing with the COVID pandemic, the country finds itself in a reckoning for racial justice, reexamining systems and traditions and practices that disproportionately benefit white people. We’re listening, and learning, and working to amplify the voices of those who traditionally haven’t had a seat at the table.

New York has been doing so well with bringing down the COVID illness rates as we move through the phases of reopening, that it feels like we’re creeping closer to The New Normal. But it’s no time to let our guards down. Phase 4 means that indoor establishments are still restricted. Most galleries are quite small and adequate ventilation continues to be an issue. So once again, the usual Main Street vigor of Second Saturday art happenings will be muted.

That doesn’t mean nothing is going on, though. If you’re heading out to a protest, get inspired to make your own sign with the chalk art created and/or shared by Moraya Seeger DeGeare (@tomyoldracistearth). Other local art happenings:

Taking precautions to protect their staff and visitors, many galleries remain closed. But there’s still plenty of art. Click here to see which venues, starting with Dia, for details on any online exhibitions we’re coming across.

Our Second Saturday Art Gallery Guide is sponsored by No. 3 Reading Room and Photo Book Works, at 469 Main Street, down toward the east end of Main Street near the Story Screen Beacon Theater. Owner Paulette Myers-Rich has set up a new exhibit in the storefront windows, and is still showing the previous artist online. Peruse it at your leisure!
Do you have an art opening coming up? Tell us about it: Drop a line to editorial@alittlebeaconblog.com with the who/what/when/where, and include a representative photo, to be considered for inclusion in this Guide.
A Little Beacon Blog is accepting long-term sponsors for the Second Saturday Guide. Please contact us if interested.

Completing an online course can be done on your time and in your home, not only saving you money on your liability, personal injury protection, and collision premium but also help keep you safer on the road. Register for Online Defensive Driving Here >

Apps! We Got Apps! And The Return To Gyms. Retail Therapy Weekend 8/21/2020

NL_collage_8212020.png
Hey Hey!
So many things. Gyms are open! Your favorite yoga, pilates, fitness centers have been struggling, and Governor Cuomo has been reluctant to open. But an agreement has been reached, and Marilyn at A Little Beacon Blog has written all about it, so you can know what to expect.

Meanwhile, if you go to a bar, and the bartender insists your order some kind of delicious app, even if it's on the house, this is why. Governor Cuomo clarified guidelines in July that require bars, restaurants, breweries and tap rooms to offer food to customers, in order to encourage people to sit down/still in one place and not mingle and shoulder rub, as is usually the case in a bar. Syracuse.com wrote a great article about it with lots of details.

Scroll down for the rest of your Retail Therapy for the weekend in Beacon...

PS: If you're visiting Beacon and forgot your mask (totally saw you today!), you can buy one in town! So many boutiques here carry them. Check A Little Beacon Blog's Shopping Guide for ideas.

BINNACLE BOOKS
321 Main Street, Beacon

Copies of Colin Dickey’s latest book,  “The Unidentified” might just have some eerie doodles by none other than the unidentifier himself, @colindickey. If you haven’t picked this up a copy yet, do so today. “With the same curiosity and insight that made ‘Ghostland’ a hit with readers and critics, [in ‘The Unidentified,’] Colin looks at what all fringe beliefs have in common, explaining that today’s Illuminati is yesterday’s Flat Earth: the attempt to find meaning in a world stripped of wonder."

The fragrance diffuser is back, baby! A fresh batch has just been made here in Beacon by Lewis and Pine. We know you missed them (we did too!) and wondered where they went. They were out of stock for ages simply because the creator Yali was pregnant, but the baby has arrived, and the batch-making has resumed. Pictured here is the Hygge scent, which is great for coy home vibes as we enter cooler Fall weather.

BINNACLE BOOKS
321 Main Street, Beacon

Every so often, you'll see a call for sponsorship of a single book for a prisoner. It's the Prison Books Project that Binnacle Books started, and it's growing in popularity. We got the scoop from Binnacle Books on how it works, and why it might be growing in popularity. Read all about it here! "There are approximately 1,700 people incarcerated at Fishkill Correctional, which is in the City of Beacon. Between 200 and 250 of those people are in solitary confinement at any given time. Incidentally, people in solitary confinement can and do request books from us. According to one person who is currently in solitary, reading is one of the only things he can do to keep himself occupied. We sent him a bunch of books."

TIN SHINGLE
You've seen the challenge. You may have participated. The beautiful black and white photos of women, in the name of supporting women. But why this challenge? Why now? Because it is a revived trend of a challenge that the media is saying originated in Brazil, and now is in the name of Turkey - for women who are murdered by their spouses, boyfriends and other domestic violence results. The black and white represents life being snuffed out of color. If you jumped in too fast on this challenge, and didn't use the hashtags that support femicide going on in Turkey, or domestic abuse increases in the US due to COVID, then listen to Tin Shingle's TuneUp webinar on what to do when social media challenges come around. For instance: what did you do on Blackout Tuesday?

SCHEDULE: Happening This Weekend - 7/17/2020

The upcoming days and weeks are going to be hard(er) for everyone as Pandemic Unemployment Insurance runs out, and businesses have gone through their PPP loans. A Little Beacon Blog was fortunate enough to have been granted a PPP loan, and that payroll has come to an end. We remain committed to promoting Beacon and informing our readers as best we can, but several of our advertising accounts went on pause during the pandemic (THANK YOU to our current advertisers who have been able to support us throughout!).

Therefore, you're going to see us push our own business model a bit, which is the exciting advertising package we created for businesses small and large. You might be thinking: "Create a GoFundMe account!" and the reason we aren't is because: 1. Our website can take contributions directly! 2. We want our business model to be sustainable even during a pandemic. To do that, we need sponsor support. We think we can do it! And we sell tote bags!

WHERE YOU COME IN:
Main Street: When things shut down, we threw advertising out the window, and promoted shops and restaurants in this newsletter by way of these fun features you see below. Readers love them, and we love singing the praises and promoting great finds.
Promotion Package For Main Street Retail: For $200/month, your boutique or restaurant can be featured here too. With a new message each week. Get into the lovely details of what you got going on! Did you just put up a parklet? Did scaffolding just come down? We want to talk about it. But don't worry...if you don't sign up for advertising, we still pay attention and promote things when we can. We value your investment in advertising very much, and encourage you to support any local media, even if it's not us. A Little Beacon Blog will continue to promote online classes for fitness studios, who remain closed.

Boscobel - Now Open For Scheduled Social Distancing
"Boscobel Reimangines Its Experience; Waves $50K Rent Of Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival; Opens For Outdoor Social Distancing"

Location: 1601 Route 9D, Garrison, NY, 10524
Like many farms, camps, and museums, Boscobel was getting ready to launch its spring season into summer when the pandemic hit and mandates shut down every business. Back in March, thinking that warmer weather outdoor gatherings would be safe, they tried to move forward with an Open Air Flex Pass ticket program for their popular tenant, the Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival (HVSF), so that customers could buy tickets to the upcoming Shakespeare performances. However HVSF was unable to hold any performances due to rehearsal and gathering restrictions out of safety. Boscobel waved the HVSF rent of $50,000, and moved forward with re-imagining how it can continue. Additionally, they will begin researching and incorporating the histories of Boscobel’s early Black inhabitants, funded by a Humanities New York grant. Walking the grounds is free for households of healthcare workers, and tickets are now available for the public. Scheduling in advance is required for both types.

Itching For Second Saturday - Happening This Weekend: 7/10/2020

We know...We know...you want your Second Saturday experience, and you want it now. So do the artists! They want to reach you. But we're still in Pandemic Land, so artists are getting creative. A Little Beacon Blog's Second Saturday Editor, Catherine Sweet has hunted around, and found a new window display from the ever-so-careful No. 3 Reading Room and Photo Book Works, who's literary and artistic experience usually invite touch or closeness with paper. This exhibit features a Beacon artist, Edwin Torres. Learn all about it here.

Phase 4 has brought back the arts with restrictions.  Museums are opening and galleries are slowly opening up on Main Street.  We have a few openings this weekend - in person, online, and even art show window displays.

Clutter's Social Distancing Guidelines: "Due to the ongoing coronavirus situation we will only be allowing in ten guests at a time. ARTIST STANLEY LINDWASSER HAS PASSED
You last saw one of Stanley's exhibits at Oak Vino. But you may have seen Stanley himself walking up and down Main Street, as he often did with his little dog. Recently, he would have had his oxygen attached to him to help him make it through the walk. In May, Stanley has passed away from pulmonary fibrosis.

The Back Together Guide - 7/3/2020

You still have many choices of things to do this weekend, even though, fireworks in Beacon have been postponed this year.  Below in our Events listings are three alternative locations you can watch fireworks from this year. You can read more about it in this article

Have you seen an increase in chalk-art today? Look for more this weekend. Moraya Seeger DaGeare, the granddaughter of Pete Seeger, is spearheading a city-wide protest project - "To My Old Racist Earth," inviting residents and local businesses to action again social injustice through street art. Whether it's chalk art, signs, posters, murals, the weather this weekend should be dry. Get the full scoop about Moraya and #ToMyOldRacistEarth in this article.

“To My Old Racist Earth Art” Project
Day
: Friday, July 3, 2020 and into the weekend (and beyond?)
Time: All Day
Location: Your sidewalk, Beacon, NY
Organized by the granddaughter of Pete Seeger, on July 3rd (hopefully not a rainy day) we will take to the streets, driveways, sidewalks and parking lots, to draw art that highlights marginalized groups. The name of this project is a play on the title of the Pete Seeger song, “To My Old Brown Earth." It can be chalk art, or you can paint your own signs and put them in your yards, front doors, and windows. This can mean #BlackLivesMatter-inspired art. It can also mean anything that speaks to the corrupt system we are breaking down. Here is a great example from The Studio @ Beacon

ANTALEK & MOORE
Antalek and Moore Insurance Agency wants to make sure you know about a pandemic-based credit that has been issued by several insurance companies for auto-insurance. To ease the financial burden, insurance companies like Travelers have issued a 15% Stay At Home credit for April, May and June statements to bank accounts connected with the billing system, or sent checks home. If you have questions about if you received this, or if your insurance company provided it, call Antalek and Moore today. Most credits were automatic, so there was nothing you needed to do. Please note, this only happened with participating auto insurance companies that Antalek and Moore represents. They can also help you switch carriers if you want to feel the love from a different carrier.

Juneteenth Celebrations, Happening This Weekend, AND Retail Therapy Guide! - 6/19/2020

Juneteenth commemorates the emancipation of the last remaining enslaved African Americans in the Confederacy in 1865 - two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was formally issued. Juneteenth is also known as Black Independence Day, Emancipation Day, Freedom Day, Juneteenth Independence Day or Juneteenth National Freedom Day (a Union general rode to Texas to deliver the very late memo, to that state who was not enforcing the freedom law). Governor Cuomo announced he's proposing to make Juneteenth a NY State holiday beginning 2021. Mayor Kyriacou made it official in Beacon.

This weekend there will be several events to hear from your community and learn about the history of this date that is not often discussed in school.  Click on the individual fliers below for a closer view and see details below in our Events Guide listings.
