The Time Is Now (and did you check under your car?)...Retail Therapy Edition 11/28/2021

Hi!!! Happy Hanukkah!
Who know we'd be talking about catalytic converters at Thanksgiving? One ALBB reader had theirs stolen from underneath their car (it's part of the exhaust system, like what the muffler is a part of) the night before Thanksgiving and wrote in to ALBB with a request to spread awareness.

After reading the article, another Beaconite wrote in about 2 catalytic converters stolen from cars in their parking lot. Meanwhile, a relative from Kansas City at the ALBB dinner table had just been talking about it trending in their neighborhood. This is a $2,000-$3,000 repair job if it happens to you, and it's a type of theft that is spiking during the pandemic because of 3 valuable metals located inside of the car part. Read all about it here.

Yesterday was the City of Beacon's Holiday Lighting. Today at 1pm, all are welcome to the Family Day at the Masjid Ar Rashid Islamic Teaching Center, the mosque next door to Beacon Natural and across the street from the Post Office. Then at 6pm, the Beacon Bicycle Menorah is back! Details are all below!

PS: This pesky pandemic just won't kick! You've probably heard of the new variant, Omicron. COVID-19 cases in kids in Beacon was trending up before the Thanksgiving break, along with the rest of the country. This article contains links on how to easily find and book COVID-19 vaccination appointments, Boosters, and new shots for kids ages 5-11. Read it here.

Beacon's Holiday Wreaths Went Up!
As ALBB spotted this year's Holiday Wreaths being hung by Beacon's Highway Department (always an exciting event completed before Thanksgiving), we learned 2 new pieces of Beacon Trivia you will find out about in this article. One involves the design of the new parking signs, and the other involves a small business.

One Week Away........Retail Therapy Guide 11/19/2021

And just like that, we're less than a week away from Thanksgiving! During a blip of this week's City Council Meeting, Mayor Lee Kyriacou mentioned that there is a tree lighting ceremony on Saturday, November 27th at Pohill Park from 4-6pm. We don't know any more details than that, as there don't seem to be any postings about it anywhere online yet.

How we miss the grand and creative bicycle tree and bicycle menorah lighting from Beacon Arts! But alas.

NEWSFLASH! After we sent this blog post as a newsletter to our subscribers, a reader wrote in to let us know that the bicycle menorah lighting is ON! The Beacon Hebrew Alliance is hosting the once annual Illumin8: Lighting The Beacon Bicycle Menorah

What is back for its 4th year is Hop & Shop! Organized by retail elves in shops on Main Street, Hop & Shop was created to encourage people to travel the entire length of the mile-long Main Street to shop from as many stores as possible. And are there a lot of stores!  From pottery making to hand-crafted rings to fast fashion for men and women. From stickers to poppets to kitchen-wear, to everything. See our latest article on Hop & Shop for this year. ALBB's Shopping Editor Teslie Andrade put together a few features for you to check out.

And do take the free bus! Beacon's Loop Bus, organized in part by Kelly Ellenwood for Beacon Arts, Dutchess County, and Mayor Casale's administration, the bus can pick you up from designated points on Main Street and other points on its route between the Mount Beacon and the MTA train station.

The Beacon Farmers Market won approval from City Council and the City Administrator to remain open outside all year. They will continue to operate from the DMV parking lot, which has proved an open and accessible place for people to pass through and congregate in during the pandemic where people continue to avoid being indoors if possible. It has allowed the market to accept more vendors, and keep a spacious shopping experience.

Questlove, “Music is History” available at Binnacle!
“Focusing on the years 1971 to the present, Questlove finds the hidden connections in the American tapes- try, whether investigating how the blaxploitation era reshaped Black identity or considering the way disco took an assembly-line approach to Black genius. And these critical inquiries are complemented by his own memories as a music fan, and the way his appetite for pop culture taught him about America.  A history of the last half-century and an intimate conversation with one of music’s most influential and original voices, ‘Music Is History’ is a singular look at contemporary America.”

A Warm, Cozy Feeling... :: Retail Therapy 11/5/2021

How is it already November?! Did October feel like it didn't happen...or...?! Those parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles who did the Trunk or Treat outdoor events at Beacon's elementary schools did feel the October excitement, and we have an article coming to you soon on those results.

But in November, Hudson Valley Restaurant Week begins! It's a big time for food, as we get cozy for winter. Which is why we are bringing you this pub food review of Two Way Brewing's partnership with the Flying Jib. Written in July, it still stands, and has us very hungry as we produce this weekend edition for you.
Note To Self: Ordering on Saturday.

DIRTY BACCHUS

Benoit Courault / La Coulée 2019 / 100% Grolleau / Faye D’Anjou, Loire Valley - Deep, textural, earthy and rich - cherry, blackberry and black plum aromas and flavors dominate - with firm structure arising from well-integrated tannins and a scintillating acidity. "After 30 minutes in a broad bottomed decanter, the balance between fruit and structure is ideal. And it stays that way, slowly evolving, for a very long time. In a word, this is a rich wine, r-i-c-h but medium bodied, textured and energetic, with a very long finish" Get your hands on one of these bottles! Sure sounds delish!

Super Happy :: Let's Do This Climate And Save Ourselves :: Retail Therapy Guide 10/22/2021

In honor of Climate Solutions Week from October 17-24 held throughout the Hudson Valley to raise awareness and educate citizens on solutions to climate change everyone can support, we are bringing back an old article we did in 2020 called "The Recylcing Market That Crashed," which highlighted China's change in what they accepted as "clean" or "dirty" recycling from the world. Thanks to the change in their acceptance of what they would recycle, (ex: a dirty yogurt container or wet newspaper was rejected), lots of recycling was sitting around in trash piles.

The Beacon Green Coalition and the Climate Smart Beacon Committee of the City of Beacon took an initiative to educate the community on what recycling was good, and what ruined a "batch." In other words, what might contaminate an entire can of recylcing if you threw Capri Sun juice foils into it, or plastic bags from a store. Good news! Climate Smart Beacon sent their Fall newsletter, and reported that Beaconites have a 92% success rate of submitting good recycling items (that means you clean them, and don't put in wet items).

According to their newsletter: "The ReCommunity facility on Fishkill Ave in Beacon recently provided an inside look at how it sorts our recycling and prepares it for sale. Plastics are processed in the US – ReCommunity says plastic #1-7 are all recycled. Paper is exported, and glass is sent to Pennsylvania for recycling. ReCommunity had compliments for Beacon’s recycling habits – only 8% of collected items are rejected, which they said is “phenomenal.”

As for "filmy" plastic bags, like bread or english muffin sleeves: you can put those into a filmy sleeve collection bin at Hudson Valley Brewery and Rite Aid. You can bring batteries to Best Buy in Poughkeepsie.

Way to go, you! And now, for your list of things to do:

Monira Foundation & The KuBe Art Center Present A Two-Day Exhibition of Contemporary Portraiture:
“Artist As Subject”

Days: Saturday + Sunday, October 23 + 24, 2021
Time: 12-6pm
RSVP: Free, but Online RSVP Is Required
Location: KuBe, 211 Fishkill Avenue (The Old Beacon School), Beacon NY
You are in for a treat: the KuBe Art Center with Monira Foundation are open this weekend for a special exhibition. This gallery is located inside of the Old Beacon High School, that big brick building on the corner of Fishkill Avenue and Verplank. Here is what the exhibition is about: "How do we make sense of Yayoi Kusama, Aboudia, Ida Applebroog and Yigal Ozeri splayed together on one wall? By re-orienting the artist as the subject. By re-orienting the artist as a willing subject, we can draw a likeness to the origins of painting - specifically the myth of Narcissus. The artist is transfixed by--and transfixes us via--their own vision as it appears upon a flat surface. The KuBe Art Center and Monira Foundation invite the public to contemplate the notion of portraiture as a quasi-distorted reflection of reality, the canvas as a mirror, the subject as reified by the gaze of the artist. The exhibition spans several floors of the former public high school; however, it is on view for a very limited time."
Masks and Social Distancing will be respected.

It was painted by Elin Lundman, aka Super Happy Ghost. Elin creates wearable art for sale, like on shoes, upcycled leather art, monster jackets, skirts (all at Hyperbole) and coasters (at Solstad House). This weekend only, neighboring shops Hyperbole and Solstad House, are exhibiting Elin's work. It will feature wine, snacks and special sales. You may even get to meet the artist!

DIRTY BACCHUS
380 Main Street, Beacon

Adriana Gonzáles / Lichtenberger-Gonzáles / 100% Welschriesling / Tres Cuartos 2018 / Burgenland, Austria from Dirty Bacchus - There were only 300 bottles of this amazing elixir, in total, ever produced! This wine is a convergence of the best of natural wine practices with the best of the Jura/Jerez traditions of exploitation of evaporation, oxidation, and aging under flor - or, in Jura terms, sous voile, under a veil of yeast. This was Adriana’s passion project, comprising a single neutral oak barrique of organic Welschriesling aged for two years without topping up - “Tres Cuartos” refers to the barrel being one-quarter evaporated at the end of the twenty-four month élevage - and bottled without fining or filtration and just a dusting of So2. The result is amazing - salty, nutty, bright and alive, with resonant acidity and gripping tannins, while still preserving the fluid fruitiness and aromatics of the grape. An astounding, exciting, deeply satisfying wine. Stop in!

BINNACLE BOOKS
321 Main Street, Beacon

“The Essential June Jordan,” ed. Jan Heller Levi and Christopher Keller - available at Binnacle Books!
“The Essential June Jordan honors the enduring legacy of a poet fiercely dedicated to building a better world. In this definitive volume, featuring an afterword by Pulitzer Prize-winner Jericho Brown, June Jordan’s generous body of poetry is distilled and curated to represent the very best of her works. Written over the span of several decades―from ‘Some Changes’ in 1971 to ‘Last Poems’ in 2001―Jordan’s poems are at once of their era and tragically current, with subject matter including racist police brutality, violence against women, and the opportunity for global solidarity amongst people who are marginalized or outside of the norm. In these poems of great immediacy and radical kindness, humor and embodied candor, readers will (re)discover a voice that has inspired generations of contemporary poets to write their truths. June Jordan is a powerful voice of the time-honored movement for justice, a poet for the ages.”

Is It Summer? :: Retail Therapy Guide 10/16/2021

Happening-This-Weekend-Email Logo.png
It's Homecoming Weekend in Beacon. If you saw or heard a beautiful display of fireworks on Thursday night, those were part of the Homecoming vibes, and were launched after the Varsity Boys Soccer game on the new field behind the Beacon High School. Friday evening is the Football game and the weather is fine. So fine that people are driving with a little too much enthusiasm. An accident occurred on Route 52 on Thursday near the Corrections driveway and Old Glenham Road. So be careful! Don't pass on the left, and don't do any U-Turns. There are sometimes a U-Turn a minute on Main Street (we've timed it). We know *you* wouldn't do that, so tell your friends!

PS: The weather is so unusual, thank goodness for the Beacon Green Coalition working hard to make and keep changes in Beacon. Check them out here.

380 Main Street, Beacon

Frédéric Simon & Catherine Bélanger / Pinard et Filles / Frangine Québec White 2020 / 100% Le Crescent / Québec, Canada from Dirty Bacchus! Anyone who knows Steve or is familiar with Dirty Bacchus knows how much he loves the wines - the very idea - of Frédéric Simon & Catherine Bélanger and their Quixotic winemaking adventure in frigid Québec. Fermented naturally and spending three months on the skins, the organic Le Crescent (a hybrid grape introduced to the agricultural industry in 2002 that is also used by La Garagista, Jason Herr, and many others) is gently pressed, aged in neutral barriques and bottled without fining or filtration and with a light dusting of So2. "The result is a mouth-filling, energetic cornucopia with prominent, fresh flavors of apricot, mango and peach, stony minerality and strong but purposeful acidity that wraps the whole thing up like a perfect plot, punctuated by active but very gentle tannins." Stop in! Try something new this weekend!

BINNACLE BOOKS
321 Main Street, Beacon

Vanessa Veselka, “The Great Offshore Grounds” available at Binnacle Books.
*Longlisted for the National Book Award!*
“Awildly original, cross-country novel that subverts a long tradition of family narratives and casts new light on the mythologies—national, individual, and collective—that drive and define us. On the day of their estranged father’s wedding, half sisters Cheyenne and Livy set off to claim their inheritance. It’s been years since the two have seen each other. Cheyenne is newly back in Seattle, crashing with Livy after a failed marriage and a series of personal and professional dead ends. Livy works refinishing boats, her resentment against her freeloading sister growing as she tamps down dreams of fishing off the coast of Alaska. But the promise of a shot at financial security brings the two together to claim what’s theirs. Except, instead of money, what their father gives them is information—a name—which forces them to come to grips with a long-held family secret. In the face of their new reality, the sisters and their adopted brother each set out on journeys that will test their faith in one another, as well as their definitions of freedom. Moving from Seattle’s underground to the docks of the Far North, from the hideaways of the southern swamps to the storied reaches of the Great Offshore Grounds, Vanessa Veselka spins a tale with boundless verve, linguistic vitality, and undeniable tenderness.”

Second Saturday! :: Retail Therapy Guide 10/8/2021

Happening-This-Weekend-Email Logo.png
Cuddly weather is getting closer! The mornings are misty and the evenings are cool, while the afternoons still tease us with the balmy 72 degrees for a bit longer. The darker mornings and evenings mean one thing: reading under a blanket just got easier. Ever at your service, ALBB's author of our Writerly Happenings series, Phoebe Zinman, has collected many places you can find literary inspirations in the Hudson Valley this October.

As New York City and now LA require proof of vaccination at restaurants, bars and gyms, some Beacon restaurants are voluntarily wanting proof of vaccination. The Roundhouse announced their proof policy last week for people dining.

Shortly after announcing their pausing, Quinn's has announced that they are indeed reopening with live performances, but with a few differences this time: there will be a required cash admission price (versus the donation-based method used prior) and a proof of vaccination with masks.

Restaurants in Beacon have been adjusting their safety policies since the beginning, with the most recent shift being losing their outdoor dining parklets early in the Fall season.

A reminder to happy customers: restaurants often get hammered by bad online reviews for a variety of reasons. If you love an establishment, go ahead and leave a review. While most detest Yelp, it still holds weight in the media and with some readers. During coffee or tea one morning, do the rounds for someone on Google, Yelp, FB, and others to offset any grumpycats.

Wishing you a thoughtful Indigenous People's Weekend. Here is what is happening in the City of Niagra Falls. Find good reading recommendations for Native Americans in the Hudson Valley at Binnacle Books.
These Second Saturday Highlights are made possible by the sponsorship of No. 3 Reading Room & Photo Book Works.

at No. 3 Reading Room & Photo Book Works
469 Main Street, Beacon, NY 12508

On view are four works-on-paper selected from the larger body of this work from Mariam Aziza Stephan. The originals are small, intimate 6 x 18″ India ink drawings on paper that has been cut open and reassembled with additions and deletions, like the sacrifice zones they represent.

(bottom left) Teron Wright & Flu Season
at Twins Barbershop
349 Main Street, Beacon, NY 12508

Teron Wright returns with his friend, Flu Season, for more mixed media work from the two Beacon natives. Teron's art is centered around portraits with an abstract twist or feel. Teron likes to recreate all kinds of portraits or famous events that contain a message or powerful statement. The colors used represent the message or mood of the subject he's creating; the colors give the painting an abstract vibe. Flu Season's pieces consist of dark comedy, iconic cartoon characters/celebrities, politics, current events and such. His mediums are copic markers, inks, colored pencils, acrylic, oil on paper or canvas.

Fruma Shrensel's work examines our human selves as they exists in a world of form. Fruma says: "Our Being is an indefinable essence that expresses itself in countless ways. These works offer visual interpretations of only a few parts of Being. There are so many more. Come and share. What does Being mean to you?"

Time: 10am - 7pm
Location: Ann Street Studios
Join art-based networking community Women of Culture for a full day trip to the beautiful Hudson Valley, featuring artist studio visits & a private guided tour at Dia: Beacon, on Saturday, October 9th. Fall is one of the most beautiful times of year in the Hudson Valley, and our Art-full day trip combines the natural beauty of the area with two special art experiences. Some attendees will be traveling together from NYC but Hudson Valley locals are also encouraged to join for the non-transportation option (those not traveling to the area in the rental car will also need to provide their own transport in between Newburgh and Beacon). We will start our day by visiting the studios of three female artists (Theresa Gooby, Kirsten Kucek & Jackie Skrzynski) located in Newburgh, just across the Hudson from Beacon, NY. We will have the chance to learn about each artist’s process and inspirations, seeing works in progress as we go. We will then have a delicious lunch at Ms. Fairfax in Newburgh, followed by a private guided tour of Dia: Beacon. Take time to explore the galleries on your own after the tour, or take a walk along the Riverfront Trail.

Eve’s Cidery / Sparkling Perry 2020
Matt Moser-Miller, a former intern at Eve’s Cidery, foraged wild pears throughout the 2020 growing season in the Finger Lakes region for his former employer. This perry is made entirely of those wild foraged pears, which were wild yeast fermented and aged in both stainless and neutral oak, then tiraged to induce a secondary fermentation in bottle. Steve shares "the result is stunning, smelling of lilacs and beach grass and birch beer and stone, tasting of blanched almonds and unripe peaches. The mousse is full and luscious, giving body, while soft tannins and fully integrated acidity offer shape and a pleasing, flavorful finish that lingers. Good stuff!"

It's October 1st! :: Retail Therapy Guide 10/1/2021

Happening-This-Weekend-Email Logo.png
Vibes on the street say that October 1, 2021 was pretty spectacular! There is LOTS going on. All sorts of things. Scroll slowly so you don't miss it.

Saturdays for some are traditionally Sports Saturdays. There's a morning rush of some parents headed to different mini-games. Two weeks ago, a tragedy happened at Arlington High School during a Friday Night Lights kind of evening. Parents were talking about it in folding chairs the next day during a Beacon Bears game, and other games throughout our community.

A 16 year old, Quraan Smith, was stabbed at a football game at 9pm and was forever lost from his family and this region. Last week, he was remembered during a vigil at Waryas Park in Poughkeepsie for the "beautiful energy" he brought to people. Read more about him and the community response here.

While it's not Second Saturday, we are using this logo to represent the Art section and the artist who sponsored it for their exhibit!

The Fishkill Historical Society will provide a concession of culinary delights like made-to-order Dutch apple fritters, soups, chili, hot dogs and wonderful baked goods. Enjoy a tour of the museum during your visit and hear about how craftspeople of the past kept Fishkill humming while it served as a supply depot in the Revolutionary War.

DIRTY BACCHUS
380 Main Street, Beacon

“We either glean our apples from derelict orchards in West Sonoma County or work with local farmers who steward the old orchards of bygone California” - planted by historical characters like Luther Burbank, Felix Gillet, Albert Etter and others - “for the specific climate of Northern California.” The man who wrote that is Aaron Brown, the cider maker at Bardos Cider. These are ciders for Situationists, you might say, as they directly satisfy an authentic desire for natural quench! And while we all have to wait for the arrival of the three ciders Steve tasted, he does have some of the 2019 vintage of the ‘Mestizo Green Label’ remaining in stock. Stop in!

Spooky Hudson River Boat Tours On The "Solaris" From The Maritime Museum Throughout October

Hudson River Maritime Museum, located in Kingston on the Rondout Creek, is offering boat tours to hear local tales of legends and lore aboard Solaris on Friday and Saturday evenings throughout October. Passengers will explore the Hudson River and Rondout Creek by spooky searchlight and listen to legends and lore of the Hudson River from the pages of Washington Irving or straight from newspaper headlines of centuries past.

Guides will share stories including the tale of the serpent of the Hudson River, the terrible crime of William Salisbury, and Rondout's barge graveyard. Tickets range from $20-$25 and all proceeds support the museum’s educational programs.

Solaris Is A 100% Solar-Powered Boat

Solaris is the museum's 100% solar-powered tour boat and floating classroom. The boat was built on campus at the Wooden Boat School and is the only solar-powered boat in operation on the Hudson River. This quiet vessel does not require any fossil fuels to operate. The lantern cruises are part of over a dozen themed tours happening this season, including visits to local shipwrecks, Indigenous history events, and trips to the Rondout Lighthouse.

All boat tickets include general admission to the museum, open Thursday-Sunday, 11 am to 5 pm. This event is one of over a dozen themed boat tours happening on the Rondout Creek and Hudson River this season. Find details and a calendar at www.solarboattours.org or call 845-338-0071.

About The Hudson River Maritime Museum

The Hudson River Maritime Museum is dedicated to the preservation and interpretation of the maritime history of the Hudson River, its tributaries, and related industries. In addition to extensive collections documenting maritime transportation, industry, recreation, and natural science, the museum offers classes and programs at its Wooden Boat School, Sailing and Rowing School, and aboard Solaris, the 100% solar-powered tour boat and floating classroom. The museum is located along the historic Rondout waterfront in downtown Kingston. Visit www.hrmm.org for more information.

Sunday Is A Big Day :: Retail Therapy Guide 9/24/2021

Happening-This-Weekend-Email Logo.png

Sunday is Beacon's annual Spirit of Beacon Day! This 44 year old event, run entirely by dedicated volunteers (this is a City-blessed event, but not a City-sponsored/organized event), began in 1977 after racial tensions between Beacon students and the community escalated into days. In trying to come together to understand one another, this day was born.

Normally celebrated as a grand parade with a route lined with information tables from organizations, faith-based organizations, non-profits, and food, the first year of the pandemic brought that public parade to a pause, and instead, the organizers re-routed a mini-parade throughout the city.

This year, with businesses open, yet safety measures still in place with the Delta variant surge, the Spirit of Beacon Day Committee has coordinated opportunities for organizations and businesses to hold opportunities in their spaces. Get all of the details here at the Spirit of Beacon Day Website. Additionally, ALBB has also listed the events with a brief historic intro here.

It should be noted, that while this day is celebratory, the housing situation in Beacon is not. Several of our families with children of all ages have had to move out, or stay in place in small apartments or houses in order to stay here. Renters of all ages have little protections, and are also being forced out due to rising prices.

After being pressed by the community to develop a solution, this topic is being discussed at City Council. You can hear the latest public opinion on it during last week's City Council Meeting. This public comment was partially in response to the City's vision of having "poor people" ride e-scooters and public transportation everywhere, instead of needing or wanting cars, as the City recommends reducing parking requirements in order to build more housing. While the parking issue has pros and cons, it has sparked debate and brought renters' stories into the forefront.

DIRTY BACCHUS
380 Main Street, Beacon

Raphael Lyon / Enlightenment Wines Meadery / The Athanor - This is among Enlightenment’s driest meads and it is a new category for Raphael Lyon, Dirty Bacchus' favorite mead maker, who ferments caramelized local wildflower honey for several months before aging it for two years in used whiskey barrels. A complex mix of cooking spices, allspice, cedar and browned butter keep one’s nose busy in the glass unfolding layer after layer of olfactory excitement. On the palate, strong black coffee, caramel, rum and brown butter balance well with a fine acidity that lifts the whole experience and carries it to a very long finish. Stop in this weekend! Try something new.

BINNACLE BOOKS
321 Main Street, Beacon

Gayl Jones, “Palmares” available at Binnacle! “First discovered and edited by Toni Morrison, Gayl Jones has been described as one of the great literary writers of the 20th century. Now, for the first time in over 20 years, Jones is ready to publish again. ‘Palmares’ is the first of five new works by Gayl Jones to be published in the next two years, rewarding longtime fans and bringing her talent to a new generation of readers.
Intricate and compelling, ‘Palmares’ recounts the journey of Almeyda, a Black slave girl who comes of age on Portuguese plantations and escapes to a fugitive slave settlement called Palmares. Following its destruction, Almeyda embarks on a journey across colonial Brazil to find her husband, lost in battle.  Combining the author’s mastery of language and voice with her unique brand of mythology and magical realism, Jones reimagines the historical novel. The result is a sweeping saga spanning a quarter century, with vibrant settings and unforgettable characters, steeped in the rich oral tradition of its world. Of Gayl Jones, the New Yorker noted, ‘[Her] great achievement is to reckon with both history and interiority, and to collapse the boundary between them.’ Like nothing else before it, ‘Palmares’ embodies this gift.”

Music :: Beer :: Chai :: Pumpkins :: Retail Therapy Guide 9/18/2021

Things To Do In BeaconGuide.png
Hello and good Yom Kippur (Thursday) to those who practice! G'mar Chatima Tovah. Yom Kippur is the most solemn religious fast of the Jewish year, the last of the 10 days of penitence (showing repentance) that begins with Rosh Hashanah (the Jewish New Year). We asked a local reader and columnist, Bruce Apar (TapInto and River Journal), about what Yom Kippur means to him:
"Yom Kippur is a very solemn holy day for the Jewish faith, but it is the only day on which we fast. What’s little known outside the faith is that the Sabbath (Saturday) is considered the most holy day," he said.

"In Hebrew (and in theory), to great someone for Yom Kippur, it’s G’mar Chatima Tova, which means “may you be sealed for good” because the belief is that our fate for the coming year is written on Rosh Hashanah (Jewish New Year) and sealed on Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement, where we ask to be absolved of our sins from the past year). In practice, on Yom Kippur, most Jews tend to greet each other saying, “Easy fast” and “Have a sweet year.”

With Sukkot right around the corner, most visibly celebrated in Beacon by the Beacon Hebrew Alliance at Pohill Park on Main Street and Wolcott, the setup in that park will not happen again this year as they wish to respect safety measures during the pandemic, and are instead having something different, a little bit like blind dating.

Today (Saturday) is the 100th celebration of Slaterpalooza, the music event fundraiser for the Slater Chemical Fire Company, the firehouse in Glenham. Learn all about it here.

Meanwhile, Quinn's, the jazz music venue featuring Japanese comfort food, has announced their temporary closure starting last week. Read all about that here.

BINNACLE BOOKS
321 Main Street, Beacon

Kaveh Akbar, “Pilgrim Bell” available here! Along with many more hidden gems.
“With formal virtuosity and ruthless precision, Kaveh Akbar’s second collection takes its readers on a spiritual journey of disavowal, fiercely attendant to the presence of divinity where artifacts of self and belonging have been shed. How does one recover from addiction without destroying the self-as-addict? And if living justly in a nation that would see them erased is, too, a kind of self-destruction, what does one do with the body’s question, ‘what now shall I repair?’ Here, Akbar responds with prayer as an act of devotion to dissonance—the infinite void of a loved one’s absence, the indulgence of austerity, making a living as a Muslim in an Islamophobic nation—teasing the sacred out of silence and stillness. Richly crafted and generous, ‘Pilgrim Bell’s linguistic rigor is tuned to the register of this moment and any moment. As the swinging soul crashes into its limits, against the atrocities of the American empire, and through a profoundly human capacity for cruelty and grace, these brilliant poems dare to exist in the empty space where song lives—resonant, revelatory, and holy.

Ida In Beacon :: Retail Therapy Guide 9-3-2021

Things-To-Do-In-Beacon-Retail-Therapy.png
September is known to be one of the most beautiful months in the year - the crispest blue sunny skies surrounding the back-to-school season. September is the time to begin again. After 2001, that changed when optimism was ripped into by the planes hitting the towers, exposing our vulnerability.

Crisp blue skies in September are the result of humidity clearing after a hurricane passes through. The most devastating days the morning after a hurricane are often the most beautiful. Beaconites in Beacon, as well as those commuting in, and those who went away for college, or careers were impacted differently as ALBB began to document here. If you have a story you wish to share, please submit it to editorial@alittlebeaconblog.com so that we can help document what happened.

Weekend train service along the Hudson line has been suspended, and the MTA says they hope to have limited service running next week.

Governor Kathy Hochul declared a State of Emergency for 14 counties in Downstate New York, and Dutchess County is one of them. County Executive Marcus Molinaro encouraged residents and businesses to document damage in preparation for applying for FEMA money.

COVID-19 numbers in Dutchess County are holding steady with an increase (hovering at 795 Active Cases), with 32 of those Active Cases in Beacon, leaving the week with a rise in hospitalizations (42 people in the hospital), and prayers for two more deaths since we last wrote (467 people who have died). Former Albany councilperson Ronald Bailey has passed from complications due to COVID-19.

In times of uncertainty, comfort can be found in preparations. Like cleaning the gutters, trimming trees, reviewing home insurance policies, investing in that sub-pump, and tightening your estate planning. A Little Beacon Blog's Business Directory can be a place to start to find a resource to partner with.

Meanwhile, keep your spirits up with knowledge, plenty of good food, veggies, and seeing friends. Move your body (see ALBB's Adult & Kids Classes below) and more ideas on how to do that are below!

All hearts and eyes are with Afghanistan as troops and veterans work to save as many Americans and Afghans as possible. Coverage in national media including the Washington Post, the BBC and NPR have been following different details as events unfold. New stories, like this one are coming out: "An army of veterans and volunteers organizes online to evacuate Afghans, from thousands of miles away"

ALBB is looking for local resources who are helping with refugee resettlement so that we can promote it. If you know of a local group who is helping, please also let us know.

ALBB's poetic writer, Izdihar Dabashi, shared a fundraiser from a local resource, Columbia Muslim Students Association (MSA). Izdihar is a graduate of Marist in Psychology and Neuropsychology, and a Masters student at Columbia studying Psychology, Neuroscience, and Deaf and Hard of Hearing.

Columbia MSA says:

"In response to the disastrous earthquake in southern Haiti and political/humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan, Columbia MSA is raising funds to support response & recovery in Haiti and Hazara refugees fleeing Afghanistan. The proceeds from this fundraiser will be evenly distributed to charity organizations Hope for Haiti and GIFT Organization's Refugee Sponsorship services.

"GIFT Organization is a CRA registered charity in Ontario, Canada. In light of the Canadian government allowing 20,000 Afghan refugees to settle in the country, a coalition of Canadian Hazara community organizations and North American Islamic Centers have made a goal to sponsor 20 Hazara families to settle in Canada, using GIFT as an intermediary fund. This fundraiser is focused on sponsoring Hazara Afghans, an ethnic minotiry that has long been persecuted by the Taliban. Hazaras are targeted because 1. many are Shia Muslims, 2. they have distinctive ethnic roots and 3. they have separate economic and political origins."

Yanarella Dance Studio
312 Main St., Beacon, NY
Teacher Spotlight

Sue has been dancing since she was 5 years old.  Her first dance lesson was at Yanarella School of Dance and that is where she spent all of her dancing years.  She attended many dance conventions, NADAA, Dance Caravan, and was even a guest teacher at some of those conventions. She continued her dance education at Cortland State where she studied under Gus Giordano.

She studied all forms of dance; ballet, tap, jazz, acrobatics and modern.  She even did Tap Dancing on Pointe but her love and greatest accomplishment as a young dancer was Acrobatics!  Sue had many solos throughout the years at Yanarella – using top hats, glasses of water, stairs – anything that the director could imagine.

She and her partner at that time, Eric Villani, entered the Dutchess County Fair Talent Show and won first place.  This sent them to the Syracuse State Fair where they competed as well.  This was back in 1969!!

Sue continues to teach and her love for tap dancing shines as she teaches the Adult Tap Classes.  She enjoys the comradery of the adults and their eagerness to learn something new in their life.  She is full of energy and it shows!

As You Go Out And About...Weekend Guide For 8/20/2021

Happening-This-Weekend-Email Logo.png
As the last days of summer are here, you are wanting to enjoy them at fairs, festivals, movie nights under a pavilion, and more. When you do, we are recommending you be mindful of the high positivity rate of COVID-19 right now in Dutchess County. During the decline in June 2021, there were 56 Active Cases in Dutchess County, according to Dutchess County Executive Marcus Molinaro during an address this week. As of August 18, 2021, there are 732 Active Cases. As of today, there are 30 Active Cases in Beacon.

To help you track it, ALBB has revived our publishing of local Active Case and Hospitalization Numbers. You can read today's here.

When you go out, try to create social distancing for yourself, even if it is not being provided for you. Like at a fairground or amusement park. Use your body language to make your space big. Only 55% of residents in Dutchess County have been fully vaccinated with all of the recommended doses of their brand (meaning, a good handful did not get their second shot).

Back2School Block Party from I Am Beacon
Day: August 21, 2021
Time: 12pm - 4pm
Location: South Avenue Park (by Loopers Basketball Court)
I Am Beacon and Key Food Marketplace announce the return of the “Back 2 School Block Party” on Saturday, August 21st at South Avenue Park in Beacon.

Organizers say the purpose of the event is to support students as they head into the 2021-2022 school year by connecting families to local organizations, youth services and resources. President of I Am Beacon, Reuben Simmons, shares his sentiment for youth activities - “My Mom had me in many different programs growing up that helped shaped me into the person I am today. From playing sports to joining Boy Scouts and even being a part of Yanerella School of Dance. I believe it is important to keep our kids busy and active.”

The free event will also provide people with an opportunity to donate school supplies to local children in need. The Back 2 School Block Party will have a free giveaway of  drawstring backpack to the first 100 students, which include informational material and a starter kit of supplies provided by Staples. The event will also have airbrush tattoos, activities, and music by DJ King Cyrus. There will be live performances throughout the day put on by The Beacon Players Club, Cub Scouts Pack 1, and Howland Chamber Music Circle.

Additionally, a friendly basketball game between Beacon Hoops Coaches vs. City of Beacon Police Department and Dutchess County Sheriff’s Department followed by the Beacon Hoops All Star game is scheduled to begin at 12:30PM.

DIRTY BACCHUS
380 Main Street, Beacon

Gregoire & Judicaëlle Perron / La Combe Aux Reves / 100% Jacquère / Jack Erre Dans Les Abimes 2019 - Jack Erre “in the depths” offers a stunning example of that mouthwatering Alpine acidity that can transform a wine from very good to truly great by way of a kind of earthy transubstantiation that arises when grapes from generous mountainside soils are tended by committed, scrupulous vignerons. Here, that acid functions as a fine mesh purse to hold the rest of the experience - citrus and other tree fruits, a hint of dried banana chips, a rock dust minerality that has the sharpness of fresh early morning mountain air - together in thrilling harmony. $33. Such a beautiful bottle! Might buy - might save and use as a flower vase.

Friday The 13th...What It Really Means...& The Retail Therapy Guide 8/13/2021

Things-To-Do-In-Beacon-Retail-Therapy.png

Well...well...well...It's Friday the 13th! This day has never felt particularly scary (unless you were a Knights Templar in 1307...eeks, King Phillip the IV of France!), and now we possibly know why, thanks to the consistent posting of Beacon-based soul healer, clairvoyant and seer, Shannon Brandt, owner  of The Raven and The Wolf Spiritual Services.

During November 2020's Friday the 13th, Shannon shared this post that might give you something different to think about today. Shannon combines it with the possible root of the word "Friday," where some believe the last day of the week was named after the goddess Freya. According to some scholars, Friday is named after two goddesses: Venus (goddess of love) and Freya (goddess of love, fertility, battle, death, and magic).

The number 13, according to some in spiritual circles, is connected to a woman's cycle as pulled by the moon, which used to be, and still is by some, celebrated openly. Usually in a society or community with a patriarchal edge, a woman's cycle is viewed as shameful and/or something to hide or hate, rather than encouraging a woman to realize "their amazing potential to create and hold space for new life," says author Tanaaz Chubb.

Therefore, Shannon encourages, Friday the 13th was considered the day of the Goddess. Yet was hindered by people like Heinrich Kramer in 1400s who felt threatened by a woman's power or healing knowledge, and developed trials to have women burned at the stake.

For Friday the 13th, we're going to go with the celebration of the female energy version, and take this moment to suggest that you consider period panties that are keepers instead of disposable pads or tampons. Read all about the best ones in Good Housekeeping! And consider donating some to a Tiny Food Pantry near you.
