It Doesn't Have To Be This Way & Happenings For This Weekend! | Retail Therapy Guide 6/26/2021

Things-To-Do-In-Beacon-Retail-Therapy.png
When we got the email from Homespun to sunset the wine subscription and disable the wine store of their website, our hearts sank. A Little Beacon Blog wears many hats, one of which is designing and maintaining websites for private clients.

Homespun knew that the selling of wine bottles would be temporary and was to help them increase sales during the pandemic, but no restaurant anticipated the 24hr notice they received this week when Governor Cuomo ended the State of Emergency status, which scrubbed other relief rules that the state legislature hadn't decided on yet.

There is a lot more to this story, as 38 other states in the country have approved extending the alcohol to-go business model for restaurants, while 11 states have made it permanent. Yet New York, whose governor prides itself on being ahead of the curve, gave a big 🤷🏼‍♀️ "Oh well" as the state legislature went on recess until January 2022, thereby stalling any changes.

Homespun will be just fine - you can order incredible wine by the glass now LOL, but this issue exposes the decades-long stronghold that wine and liquor lobbyists have on the state. Remember the 7pm wine store law that everyone pushed for to help Beacon wine stores be allowed to stay open until 9am? Take a read of this latest law dispute over wine bottles and spirits to-go here.

Juneteenth! And The Weekend Roundup / Retail Therapy Guide

Things-To-Do-In-Beacon-Retail-Therapy.png

For the second year in a row (see our first year!), A Little Beacon Blog is holding a Juneteenth art contest. The aim is to reserve space for the African American community to show their voices and visions during Juneteenth.

WHAT IS JUNETEENTH?

Juneteenth is a holiday of independence celebrated on June 19th by the Black community commemorating the liberation of the enslavement of Africans taken from their homes in other countries, separated from their families, and brought to America so that white Americans could have their own Independence Day from Great Britain on July 4th. Some Native American tribes in Oklahoma kept African slaves as well, as was a recent focus during the Tulsa Race Massacre in Greenwood.

Juneteenth has been celebrated for over 150 years by African Americans, but not all knew about it, as it wasn’t taught regularly in schools. Last year, during the social reckoning of 2020, Juneteenth got elevated, paid attention to, and respected by the white community and other races. On June 17th, 2021, President Joe Biden signed Juneteenth into law as a national holiday, where the government workforce and schools will observe the holiday. Several businesses have pledged the paid day off as well.
The Beacon City School District is pretty excited about it.

HOW THIS WORKS

Submit your work for consideration to be published on A Little Beacon Blog.

  • Any age is welcome.

  • People from the African American community, of any mix or origen.

  • African Americans living in the Hudson Valley of New York.

  • Any medium is welcome. If you recorded a song, send it via Spotify or something we can embed. Actually, we can embed an mp3 on our own website! Artwork that is painted, pixelized, collaged, quilted, etc.

  • Please answer these 2 questions with your submission:

    • What do you want to tell the United States about what you want changed?

    • What do you want to tell _______ your town in the Hudson Valley about what you want changed? Any wish. What is your greatest wish?

  • A Description of your artwork.

  • Selected submissions will be published on A Little Beacon Blog, along with your answers. You can elect to skip giving an answer.

  • Selected submissions will win grant money if we get sponsors. Of the sponsorship dollars, 100% will be divided among the artists.

  • Email art file to katie@alittlebeaconblog.com

  • Deadline: June 23rd. Publish Date: June 26th

100% Of SPONSORSHIP GOES TO PRIZES/GRANTS

We can offer prizes if we have sponsorships. Depending on how many submissions we get, we could award grant money to several people. Therefore, 100% of sponsor dollars will go towards these grants.

To sponsor:

  1. Visit our Reader Support page and select a dollar amount.

  2. In the Comments, please indicate if this is to sponsor this initiative, and we will set it aside. Please also indicate if you want your name or business name listed with the final publishing of all artwork.

Once all sponsorships are in, the dollar amount will be divided evenly among the selected submissions.
Thank You!

BINNACLE BOOKS
321 Main Street, Beacon

Yuri Herrera, “A Silent Fury: The El Bordo Mine Fire” - “The alert was first raised at six in the morning: a fire was tearing through the El Bordo mine. After a brief evacuation, the mouths of the shafts were sealed. Company representatives hastened to assert that ‘no more than ten’ men remained inside the mineshafts, and that all ten were most certainly dead. Yet when the mine was opened six days later, the death toll was not ten, but eighty-seven. And there were seven survivors.
A century later, acclaimed novelist Yuri Herrera has reconstructed a workers’ tragedy at once globally resonant and deeply personal: Pachuca is his hometown. His work is an act of restitution for the victims and their families, bringing his full force of evocation to bear on the injustices that suffocated this horrific event into silence.”

Beacon Queer and Trans Liberation March
Day:
June 12, 2021
Time: 2pm - 4pm
Location: Meet at Memorial Park (Beacon NY)
Organized "in response to ongoing harassment of queer and trans people in Beacon and our supporters, will gather at Memorial Park on Saturday, June 12 at 2 PM and march to Polhill Park, where we will hold a speakout," explained one of the organizers, local artist and victim of harassment, Donna Minkowitz. Beacon neighbor Richard (Dick) Murphy has proudly sent anti-gay letters to his neighbors who hang Pride flags outside of their homes, including Donna, which ALBB wrote about last year. Later in December 2020, Donna told the Highlands Current that "a creepy three-foot long doll was left staked into my lawn," and others have reported the letters arriving again in 2021. Separately, during a Beacon City Council Meeting, a regular citizen participant, Stash Yankowski, called in with his request to bar trans women and girls from girls’ and women’s sports. He was cut off by City Councilmember Amber Grant in an unusual act of interruption.

The organizers announce: "Families with young children or anyone for whom marching may present a difficulty are invited to gather at Polhill Park at 2 PM and greet the march as it arrives! There will be sign-making tables at Polhill for families with children that would like to make signs for the march. The tables are staffed by Compass Arts and Fareground. That activity will start at 2 PM. Any adults for whom marching may be difficult are also invited to gather at Polhill Park and await the main march. The route taken by the march is not public.

A reader wrote in with this question, and ALBB doesn't think you need a permit for a yard sale (you don't, right?!) and we emailed the City Administrator and the Beacon Recreation for conformation, but didn't hear back as of this publishing. Alas, maybe it went to spam. Send ALBB pics of treasures you find while you're out and about!

BAU Gallery Solo Shows: Daniel Berlin's 'Recognition' & Diana Vidal's 'Strange Invention'
Day:
June 12, 2021
Time: 12 pm - 6 pm
Location: 508 Main Street, Beacon, 12508
Daniel Berlin’s second solo exhibition at BAU, “Recognition”, consists primarily of watercolor and painting. The title references the instant in the creative process when contact is made. The moment when this poetic flash is recognized can be fleeting or elastic. Even so, it reveals a natural juncture that can connect the artist, the art, and the viewer. It is a fertile crossroad and reflects the essence of the aesthetic transaction.
Diana Vidal's 'Strange Invention' is an exhibition exploring the influence of time and light on a photograph. The use of 35mm film makes each photograph unique, a perfect document of a fleeting moment in time. Documenting these instances ensures that the sublime, which manifests itself every day, is captured in perpetuity and can be experienced over and over again.

Register babies & toddlers (and yourself for Thursdays!) by visiting Yanarella Dance online. Name a better way to spend the summer! Also,  the new "tumble bunnies" class for 4-6-year-olds will officially start on the 17th.

Yanarella has been guiding and instructing students since 1957, over 60 years ago, under the direction of CarolAnn Yanarella Miller. For 38 years she passed on her love and wisdom to thousands of students, including Angela Van Vlack. In 1996, CarolAnn stepped down and passed the privilege of nurturing students to Angela and she became the current owner and director of Yanarella School of Dance. The director may have changed, but the principles have not. Since the day they opened their doors, their philosophy has been that “every child should have the same opportunity to dance, regardless of talent or ability. There is no can’t in dance. There’s only a C-A-N”.

ANTALEK & MOORE INSURANCE AGENCY

Cyber security is all over the news right now. Antalek & Moore created a few tips for you:

"We are exposed to more information now than ever before, and in turn, our information is exposed to others more than ever. Regardless of your internet use, here are 5 tips to better ensure your personal information stays confidential.

1) Tricky Passwords: Today, many sites require certain characters and symbols when creating a new password. Follow this method on all platforms. Consider using uppercase letters, symbols and making your passwords different across your platforms.

2) Safe Clicking: Be wary of clicking on attachments or links in emails and other instant messages. If there’s any suspicion surrounding them, it’s best not to click to avoid scams and viruses.

3) Backing UP: Since computers, today have a wealth of personal information, as well as memories stored on them, consider backing up this data onto an external hard drive.

4) Protect Sensitive Information: Avoid keeping sensitive personal information on your laptops, work computers, and mobile devices.

5) Anti-Virus Protection: Only install an anti-virus program from a known and trusted source. (Norton, McAfee, etc.) a computer program used to prevent, detect, and remove malware."

Yanarella Dance Studio

312 Main St., Beacon, NY
Angela Van Vlack, owner of Yanarella, is a true Beaconite. She was born at the then Highland Hospital, raised in the Beacon City School District, built a family here, and continues to reside in Beacon to this day. Angela has had a unique opportunity to actively participate in and help shape the flourishing Beacon arts community over the past several decades with her community involvement.

Angela began dancing at the early age of four under the direction of Carol Ann Yanarella Miller. She fell in love from the very first class. Dance quickly blossomed from a passion to a lifestyle. As a child, Angela and her cousins would coordinate and choreograph dance recitals for the neighborhood. Angela was an exceptional acrobat, demonstrating tremendous skill with her ability to perform various high-level tricks including limbers, walkovers, aerials, and back handsprings. She started assisting at the age of 14, teaching at the age of 16 and now has over 40 years of experience as a dance instructor. Teaching has brought immense joy to Angela’s life and she is proud of all of the students she has taught.

Angela is celebrating her 25th year as owner and director of Yanarella School of Dance—an illustrious studio that has been in existence for over 60 years. Angela teaches all levels ranging from Mommy & Me for toddlers to adult classes with students as old as their mid-80s. She teaches all types of dance including but not limited to Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Tumbling, Contemporary, and Hip-Hop. Angela’s diverse Dance resumé is not confined solely to Yanarella. Angela studied Classical Ballet and Modern and served as choreographer for the annual Landphony Swimphony Competition at the College of New Rochelle.

Furthermore, she has studied and collaborated with a long list of dance legends including Luigi, Gus Giordano, Sheila Barker, Ginger Cox, Chio, Anthony LoCascio, Hillary-Marie, Frank Hatchett, Jason Warley, Bob Rizzo, and, one of her greatest influences, Debbi Dee mainly through her involvement with NADAA (the National Association of Dance and Affiliated Arts)—an organization for which Angela currently serves as National Vice President and New York Chapter President. Angela has also taught a preschool program for the Humpty Dumpty Nursery School, has taught throughout the Beacon City School District, and was co-coach of the award-winning Beacon High School Dance team.

Angela also had a professional career outside of the realm of dance. She earned a Baccalaureate of Science degree in Nursing from the College of New Rochelle and is licensed as a registered nurse in New York and Connecticut with a specialty in Neonatal/Pediatrics. She worked in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Danbury Hospital, was a visiting nurse and worked as a substitute nurse in the Beacon City School District before taking a leave of absence to raise her family and focus on the studio.

Is Defensive Driving Worth The Investment
To say there are distractions on the road would be an understatement.

"Between texting, GPS, finding the right song on our playlist, and perhaps even a little speeding, it is no surprise there are millions of trips to the ER due to motor vehicle accidents in New York State alone. We know what you’re thinking, “I am a responsible driver and not doing any of those things”, but does that mean you know how to defend yourself from those on the road who are distracted?

As cliche as this may sound, defensive driving courses really do save lives. It doesn’t matter how cautious or responsible YOU are when driving, accidents do happen. Many of the insurance carriers that we work with offer up to a 10% discount on all vehicle liability, PIP (Personal Injury Protection), and collision premiums for up to 3 years off the principal operator. And you may be eligible to reduce up to 4 points off of your driving record.

A good defensive driving course will teach you many tools to drive safely and strategically. Yes, we did just say strategically. When looking at driving from this approach, we are able to clearly show the different defensive driving techniques that are essential to remaining safe on the road.

TIN SHINGLE
Lena Rizkallah is a friend of Tin Shingle, and a neighbor here in Beacon, NY, where Tin Shingle is based. She advises people on financial planning, and calls herself a recovering attorney. One day, Lena walked into Tin Shingle's co-work space to consider renting it for workshops and single working days. That was the last day I saw Lena before the pandemic covered us all in stay-at-home orders.

The next time I saw Lena was when she walked by me in a Free Palestine march in Newburgh, NY. I was there to cover it as a reporter for my local publication, A Little Beacon Blog. We recognized each other from behind out masks. The march ended at Rep. Sean Maloney's district office in Newburgh, and Lena walked up the stairs to deliver her speech at the planned open mic session that usually accompanies marches in Newburgh and Beacon.

She was there to talk about what Palestine looks and feels like on the other side of the occupation wall, based on her experience as a first generation Palestinian living in America.

Lena gave Tin Shingle permission to publish her speech in full.

Sounding of Taps, by Dani Masterson
Day: Sunday - Monday, May 30, 31, 2021
Time: Start time is 3pm for 24 hours
Location: Mesier Park in the Village of Wappingers Falls
As reported in the Beacon Free Press, Dani Masterson, National bugler for the Spirit of 45 and New York State Director of Bugles Across America, will lead the sounding of Taps in a 24-hour tribute for Veterans on May 30 through May 31, Memorial Day. Beginning at 3pm on May 30, Dani will sound the 24 notes to Taps every hour and continue for the following 24 hours.

Normally she is in Washington, DC to commemorate, but wanted to do something different this year. "I learned how precious it is to have a bugler come to the grave site and honor the loved one with the sounding of live Taps. It is a ceremony where family and friends can all join together to say 'goodbye, well done and thank you!' to heir Veteran family member. It is a time to honor, and a time to mourn the ultimate sacrifice of their Veteran family member," Dani told the Beacon Free Press.

BINNACLE BOOKS
321 Main Street, Beacon

Edward Said, “Out of Place” - “From one of the most important intellectuals of our time comes to an extraordinary story of exile and a celebration of an irrecoverable past. A fatal medical diagnosis in 1991 convinced Edward Said that he should leave a record of where he was born and spent his childhood, and so with this memoir, he rediscovers the lost Arab world of his early years in Palestine, Lebanon, and Egypt.

Said writes with great passion and wit about his family and his friends from his birthplace in Jerusalem, schools in Cairo, and summers in the mountains above Beirut, to boarding school and college in the United States, revealing an unimaginable world of rich, colorful characters and exotic eastern landscapes. Underscoring all is the confusion of identity the young Said experienced as he came to terms with the dissonance of being an American citizen, a Christian and a Palestinian, and, ultimately, an outsider. Richly detailed, moving, often profound, ‘Out of Place’ depicts a young man’s coming of age and the genesis of a great modern thinker.”

This & many more good reads from Binnacle! Stop in & pick up the book you won't want to put down.

This Sun...This Weather!! The Retail Therapy Guide 5/21/2021

Things-To-Do-In-Beacon-Retail-Therapy.png
It's the weekend! The fast moving pace that is Beacon's Saturdays and Sundays. Word on the street is - people are at least paranoid now for doing U-Turns all over the place. We overheard a conversation about who was thinking they were going to get pulled over. Know how to not get pulled over? By not doing U-Turns - literally all over Beacon. On Willow Street - the rate of U-Turns last Saturday morning was 1 per minute. We have pictures, and we will start posting them.

The Mask Mandate. Beacon's businesses are posting their preferences. Most are keeping others safe by keeping masks UP. So please respect the signs when you see them. Or go home! Love ya :) Plenty of masks still for sale in Beacon's boutiques!

This adorable mask sign is in Meyer's Olde Dutch, which is OPEN starting today! Their new signage was designed by ALBB's sister company Katie James, Inc., and we are recommending whatever cold cocktail they just put on the menu.

BINNACLE BOOKS
321 Main Street, Beacon

Chimamanda Ngozi Adiche, “Notes on Grief”
“‘Notes on Grief’ is an exquisite work of meditation, remembrance, and hope, written in the wake of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s beloved father’s death in the summer of 2020. As the COVID-19 pandemic raged around the world and kept Adichie and her family members separated from one another, her father succumbed unexpectedly to complications of kidney failure.
Expanding on her original ‘New Yorker’ piece, Adichie shares how this loss shook her to her core. She writes about being one of the millions of people grieving this year; about the familial and cultural dimensions of grief and also about the loneliness and anger that are unavoidable in it. With signature precision of language, and glittering, devastating detail on the page–and never without touches of rich, honest humor–Adichie weaves together her own experience of her father’s death with threads of his life story, from his remarkable survival during the Biafran war, through a long career as a statistics professor, into the days of the pandemic in which he’d stay connected with his children and grandchildren over video chat from the family home in Abba, Nigeria. In the compact format of ‘We Should All Be Feminists’ and ‘Dear Ijeawele,’ Adichie delivers a gem of a book–a book that fundamentally connects us to one another as it probes one of the most universal human experiences. Notes on Grief is a book for this moment—work readers will treasure and share now more than ever–and yet will prove durable and timeless, an indispensable addition to Adichie’s canon.”

KATIE JAMES, INC.
Grand Rising, friends! That is the morning mantra of Nickeya Allen, the Millennial Matriarch you have seen participating in community, economic and housing development spaces. Nickeya's capacity is vast and vital, and she needed a logo to capture all that she offers. Tapping into her vibe and messaging over the years, Katie James, Inc. designed this logo for her, and are honored that it was accepted by Nickeya to represent her brand. The 3 pillars of Millennial Matriarch are: Business Development, Proposals, and Liberation Projects.

Says Nickeya: "The work is intertwined with mindset coaching for those that wish to change the trajectory of our futures, unapologetically developing a better foundation that is beneficial for younger generations to come up in by way of fostering liberating experiences in business and leading vigorous acts of change!" Today Nickeya, a mother of 2 kids, walked across the stage at Mount Saint Marry College with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management. 🤞🏾
Last month, Nickeya's project, YBG Lit Expo, was awarded the New York Council on the Arts & Arts Midhudson (administered by Arts Midhudson).

Lot's Going On! Retail Therapy Guide 5/15/2021

Things-To-Do-In-Beacon-Retail-Therapy.png
It's been quite a week, friends!

The weather is beautiful and you are probably officially moving your winter sweaters to your winter storage bin to make room for fresh spring tops (but we know of a 30% off sweater sale happening now! scroll down). Lots of major things happened this week:

ALBB's podcast has returned! And with song. What started as a planned pod about Disney presentations of female and family values, turned into an improv jazz session, if you will, covering random but important topics.

One of the wake-up calls in Beacon this week was The Accident, where a 6 year old boy and his grandmother were hit by a car while they were on the sidewalk. Our coverage of traffic on Main Street and in Beacon in general was going to dominate our news cycle this week, but then also the conflict in Palestine and Israel escalated after a neighbored protest in Palestine launched a bunch of rockets. There is a protest in solidarity with Palestine in Newburgh next week, after several have happened in NYC. With that global news localizing, we are offering some perspective on it here at ALBB's sister media company Tin Shingle.

Traffic coverage is to come next. In the meantime - please be very careful out there! Drivers are driving fast, and doing too many U-Turns.

BINNACLE BOOKS
321 Main Street, Beacon
Victoria Law, “Prisons Make Us Safer and 20 Other Myths About Mass Incarceration”
“The United States incarcerates more of its residents than any other nation. Though home to 5% of the global population, the United States has nearly 25% of the world’s prisoners—a total of over 2 million people. This number continues to steadily rise. Over the past 40 years, the number of people behind bars in the United States has increased by 500%. Journalist Victoria Law explains how racism and social control were the catalysts for mass incarceration and have continued to be its driving force: from the post-Civil War laws that states passed to imprison former slaves, to the laws passed under the “War Against Drugs” campaign that disproportionately imprisons Black people. Through carefully conducted research and interviews with incarcerated people, Victoria identifies the 21 key myths that propel and maintain mass incarceration, including:
- The system is broken and we simply need some reforms to fix it
- Incarceration is necessary to keep our society safe
- Prison is an effective way to get people into drug treatment
- Private prison corporations drive mass incarceration
‘Prisons Make Us Safer’ is a necessary guide for all who are interested in learning about the cause and rise of mass incarceration and how we can dismantle it"

Pop-Ups (Rare Shopping Opportunities), Hot Dogs, Retail Therapy Guide! 4/7/2021

Things-To-Do-In-Beacon-Retail-Therapy.png
Remember this time last year? Mother's Day Weekend? Most everything was shut down, the COVID-19 numbers in New York were high and scary, and pictures of flowers just felt weirdly depressing because they were so beautiful, but the pandemic was wreaking havoc. Do you remember how the floral industry rallied to bring you online ordering and delivery? That was the beginning of the hustle that every business owner on Main Street went through, like they had never gone through before.

Having a moment of gratitude for where we are now, and are not forgetting where we were yesterday, and where people in other regions and countries are now. Thank you for supporting everyone as you have, and we know you are going to continue.

Just when you thought things couldn't get better, the Beacon Flea Market & the Beacon Farmers Market  are BACK! Check them out every Sunday - make a day out of it! Your day may start off with a brunch at one of the delicious restaurants along Main St , treasure hunting at the Beacon Flea Market, a trip to Dia: Beacon, a later lunch/early dinner at another fine Beacon restaurant, and to finish, a walk along the Scenic Hudson’s Long Dock Park.

PS. We updated our Summer Camp Guide (again) & registrations are bringing to open up! There's even one where a mermaid theme makes an appearance (Yanarella)!
ATTN: Caregivers & parents! Start browsing ALBB's Summer Camp Guide now! We organized it with age ranges, dates, and a link for more info so you can register easily. We also created this handy dandy schedule list for you to stay organized. It's a PDF template for your weekly planning!
SPONSORSHIPS: Advertisers are still welcome to participate! Parents want to know your social distance strategy, what your camp looks like, and why your camp is the best of the best!

And, so many fun things happening in-between! Plus, parklets are back! And in order to have a safe and successful indoor dining experience for everyone involved, including staff and patrons, several restaurants are opting to keep their windows and doors open. Protecting Man's Best Friend from Antalek & Moore
They are always there for you, let us help you be sure you can be there for them!

Regardless if you identify as a dog person or cat person, have a love for horses, or smaller animals you want to be sure your furry friends are protected at all costs. However, if your pet runs ill or your concern for their health is growing a trip to a vet’s office might break your bank. This financial burden is an unfortunate reality for many pet owners. If you’ve ever found yourself making the decision between your pet’s health and your financial stability consider enrolling in pet insurance. Our consultants would be more than happy to help you find a solution that makes your pet, yourself (and bank account!) happy and healthy.

From serious illnesses, broken legs, or concerning cough, regardless of the severity any vet visit can ring in a hefty bill. Be sure your pet is covered for the treatment needed with Pet Insurance. Typical cancer treatments, for example, can run $5,000. Pet insurance is there for you and your pet in these situations. Some pet insurances include Pet’s Place, ASPCA, Embrace, and Pet Plan-just to name a few. There are insurances that cover accidents only, accidents and illnesses, preventative policies to help your pet. Pet insurance often operates in a way that will reimburse you the bill of the vet, instead of providing deductibles. There also is typically an annual limit. If you have a lower annual limit, you will have a smaller monthly payment. To explain policies and insurance procedures be sure to stop by our office to speak with a representative about what coverage plan would best suit your needs as a pet owner.

If you worry about your pet’s future and health, protect them from the uncertainties of their world. Insure them long healthy life, starting now with the help of our team.

BINNACLE BOOKS

Special Message From Binnacle Books:
Chang-rae Lee, “My Year Abroad”
“Rich with commentary on Western attitudes, Eastern stereotypes, capitalism, global trade, mental health, parenthood, mentorship, and more, My Year Abroad is also an exploration of the surprising effects of cultural immersion—on a young American in Asia, on a Chinese man in America, and on an unlikely couple hiding out in the suburbs. Tinged at once with humor and darkness, electric with its accumulating surprises and suspense, My Year Abroad is a novel that only Chang-rae Lee could have written, and one that will be read and discussed for years to come.”

Dear community! As you no doubt are aware, we’ve been looking after this community fridge and tiny food pantry over the past year, alongside @fareground and @beacon4blacklives. We are moved by the level of collaboration and the continued community support. While it’s best to help stock the fridge and pantry directly if you can, we’ve also been maintaining a Venmo account and using those funds to shop for the shelves every week, as well as covering the electric bill for the fridge. THAT FUND NEEDS REPLENISHING, so if you’ve got the means, zap a few dollars to (at) binnaclefoodjustice on Venmo and we’ll keep this good thing going, together.

Job Opps! Spring...Retail Therapy Guide 3/27/2021

NL_collage_210327.jpg
Spring! Happy Start of Passover!

It's looking like the weather is turning in the right direction - the direction of warm breezes and sunshiny days. Seems like it's safe to put away the snow boots and gloves this weekend as you start Spring Cleaning.

Your outfits may be confused, as you start to acclimate to the warmer air. Not to worry - you can get a wardrobe refresh out in the many boutiques on Main Street. See A Little Beacon Blog's Shopping Guide for ideas, like Last Outpost for the rugged look and hand-designed silver jewelry, Lucky Thirty One Clothing near BJ's Soul Food for the ultimate sexy casual-wear, and for some heavily designed bling you haven't seen in a long time, Marie Pierre Collection on the far end of Main Street near the mountain.

Meanwhile, parents and caregivers are getting on their games for Summer Camps! Yes, it's that time, and more than a few camps have opened registrations already. A Little Beacon Blog has started our Summer Camp Guide, which you can start browsing here! Advertisers are still welcome to participate. HINT: You get to promote your social distance strategy! And show pictures.

PS: There are a lot of Job Opportunities this week! See ALBB's Job Listing section at the bottom.

Cupcakes and the Retail Therapy Guide 3/19/2021

Happy Weekend To You!

We are going to kick this weekend newsletter off with a picture of...carrot cake cupcakes, because cupcakes are good and happy. These are from Homespun, and available to order online to reserve yours (we swiped 3 of them after taking this photo, so...)

Most importantly, however, we wanted to address Atlanta and what our Asian friends in Beacon are experiencing as reactions to this unfold. What hasn't been spoken about much locally is how friends whose families are from Japan, or China, or the Philippines or other areas are feeling, or what kind of encounters they have endured while walking on sidewalks since the pandemic started and a former president attempted to connect a pandemic with a region.

We are quietly hearing from our friends, and they are asking for support. They want to see their friends say supportive things in social media, and to denounce things like a police captain explaining that a murderer had a "bad day." That captain was later discovered to have posted his own belief of the region connection to the pandemic, and even supported t-shirts of it.

Not sure where to start? Try asking your friends where their families are from, to get more comfortable with regions. Next, listen to this webinar with Moraya Seeger DeGeare, a Beaconite who is Black, Japanese and white, and engages in talking about race issues in a safe space.

Elementary School Opening Info and The Retail Therapy Guide - 3/5/2021

As we head into the weekend, the Beacon City School District announced today that they have been planning for and are anticipating a re-open of the Elementary Schools to a 4-day a week schedule for those who want it, starting in April. Remote-only will continue for those who want to remain at home, while the district is hiring an additional teacher to support remote-only children, according to the Reopening Slides presented by Superintendent Landahl.

Dr. Landahl mentioned that an increase in spread in virus had not occurred with the current in-person learning model, with safety measures put into place, like masking, social distancing and contact tracing. However, he stressed that "there has been an increase of mental health concerns among our students," citing a New York Times survey of scientists and doctors who study infectious disease in young children. Access Dr. Landahl's entire presentation here, where the plan is broken down into easy bullet points.

The Label Foundation Basketball Club Fundraiser
Day
: Now
Location: GoFundMe
The Label Foundation started in the summer of 2020, at the height of the protest marches in Beacon. One of the founding members is John Galloway Jr., who back then decided to run for a vacated seat on the the Beacon Board of Education, and was appointed. The Label Foundation started with a bunch of young men who you can meet here in little videos, and has been busy every since doing clothing drives and other service initiatives.

This fundraiser is to introduce their Basketball Club, which includes people from all walks of life together, especially inner-city and underprivileged kids who have not had the opportunity to participate in extracurricular activities within a safe environment for nearly a year. Players will be educated and mentored on academic topics, including early financial literacy, with formidable role models within the area, and civic engagement. Money raised goes to fees for tournaments, equipment, jerseys, and gym time.
