Last Sunday was a pleasant day in the Hudson Valley. Plenty of people enjoyed it outside for Memorial Day. Splash Down opened, and all felt right. Upon returning from the Lazy River, ALBB read, watched, absorbed the news that Rafah (the Israeli designated "safe zone" in Palestine that 1.5 million people were seeking refuge in (BBC) and lived in tents) was burning. Children's heads were decapitated. Palestinian people pulled charred bodies to dignity of any sort. We posted some of the photos on the blog. Then ALBB had a talk with their 6 year old, where they both decided there were 2 Americas.
Many people around the world were so shocked. The Internet broke. Some people shut down. Other people rose up. For the first time, many people posted their dissent with the genocide on Gaza by Israel, which you can learn more about on Tin Shingle's blog.
Here at ALBB, we narrowed our focus. We no longer grappled with the pendulum swing of feeling badly about incorporating Palestine into Beacon content. We went all out sharing more information from world leaders and thoughts from regular people in order to help stop this mass homicide and end this occupation. Most of what we have been posting at Instagram will be published onto the blog as well.
Over at Instagram, ALBB declared that the best way to see lots of Beacon joy, you would be seeing it from our advertisers!! Because those are the only posts guaranteed to publish. Sponsored posts also serve as a much needed break and breather for those of us following and resisting the genocide and occupation. Most importantly, Beacon business highlights are a great source of hope and inspiration!

A revival has happened after seeing the screening of "The Peekskill Riots" from filmmaker Jon Scott Bennett last evening at the Howland Public Library. This hidden Hudson Valley history is a must-see, and we recommend you spend an hour tonight or this weekend watching the first episode, which is 1 hour long. Here's what it's all about.
ALBB will be at the screening of the 2nd episode, happening possibly at the Peekskill Library on June 8th, and we will be recording a podcast with the filmmaker to learn about his experience making this film, which included getting blocked to even find out more information about the event:
"On August 27 and September 4th, 1949, violence broke out at two concerts held outside Peekskill, NY, headlined by Black singer, actor, and activist Paul Robeson. Citizens of Peekskill, galvanized by racist and anti-Semitic sentiments and disdain for Robeson’s left-wing views and campaign for civil rights, started two riots that resulted in hundreds of injuries, made national news, and unofficially marked the beginning of the McCarthy era, which would nearly erase Robeson from the public consciousness."

The movie “There She Goes,” starring Rachael Leigh Cook (“She’s All That”) and Utkarsh Ambudkar (“Pitch Perfect” and "Ghosts") filmed in Beacon on Thursday, and it caused excitement and a stir. Main Street was closed between Wolcott (Bank Square Coffee) and Cross Street (Luxe Optique). While an "intermittent closure" was announced by the City of Beacon via their website one day before, and the production company gave letters about sidewalk disruptions to local businesses, the closure of daytime walking and browsing, not to mention driving, was a surprise to some business owners. Several stores did not see foot traffic as they usually do for a Thursday.

We got to see the anticipated "throw the ice-cubes" scene, which included a surprise and unscripted duck into the witchy shop, much to our chagrin. Get the popcorn. The Beacon High School Career Fair is this month, and Guidance Counselor Michele Polhamus extended the registration deadline a few more days for you if you want to register your business, organization or person to show students what they can become. TBH, it was a tough week. We want to acknowledge that before we get to all of the good news. Pro-Palestinian Encampments popped up at universities all over the country, but Columbia's violent take-down by NYPD, as ordered by NYC's Mayor and Columbia University's President, was disturbing. Beacon/Newburgh local and photojournalist Alexa B. Wilkinson has photos.
The student protest this week at Columbia involved an occupation of Hamilton Hall, which is what also happened back in 1968. This was near the anniversary of that time. Columbia students were protesting against the Vietnam War, Columbia's association with weapon manufacturing industry, and against Columbia University's planned build of a gym in Harlem, the preparations of which had evicted many African Americans as a real estate expansion. Read all about that here.
The majority of ALBB readers appreciate this global coverage we have been providing, as traditional media has been telling a different tale, one that paints the protesters as violent. Countless videos like this one from Israelism Film have been showing Zionist Pro-Israeli people using bats, gates, fists, and fireworks against the Pro-Palestinian students. Some voluntarily walk into encampments and call the police, saying they feel scared.
Before you say: "What a waste of time," as you wonder how this relates to Beacon, please know that sentiment is extremely racist. Many, many residents of Beacon, both Jewish, Muslim, Arab Christian and Palestinian, are deeply connected to this, both with personal loss of family members and being part of the diaspora.
More than one local Beacon person has said: "I just don't want it coming here." That statement is also racist. Since "coming here" isn't a thing. Defining "it" is problematic and dehumanizing. People with histories are already here. And, American's tax dollars are already funding it - to the billions. And the money just keeps flowing. And we don't have free health care.
This week, encampments were erected at SUNY New Paltz and at Vassar. Last night, the administration at SUNY New Paltz ordered riot police to violently take down the encampment and arrest more than 140 people and throw away personal belongings including wallets, according to people who where there. The Administration told the students this in the afternoon, giving them a 7pm deadline. The police were not called in as a response to any activity, other than sitting and chanting. Today we took time to step through the soggy floor of one of the the destroyed apartments in Colonial Springs, which are next to Tompkins Terrace and the future Edgewater, all of which overlook the Hudson River.
On Tuesday, a fire raged through the attics of multiple apartments, the early smoke of which was reportedly first seen by Newburgh's fire department across the Hudson River, who alerted Beacon's fire department. Several other fire companies assisted in putting out the fire, but everyone living in Building 3 needed to evacuate the property for an undetermined amount of time. One apartment was that of Trina Mazumber, owner of Tara Fusion Cuisine at the Hudson Valley Food Hall. Today is International Women's Day, which has been a day for recognizing which women are not recognized. Beacon resident, Palestinian refugee and local business owner (Ziatun and Beacon Bread Company) Lena Jamal shared a post from The Slow Factory that we will quote here: "This International Women’s Day we call on all who identify as feminists to engage in the lifelong unlearning of their biases and to be in solidarity with Palestinian women, Sudanese women, Congolese women who are experiencing an ongoing genocide.

Nancy Brownell Has Passed Away; Will Be Honored During Parade Of Green
Nancy Brownell, wife of former auto dealer owner on Rte 52 Rick Brownell, passed away on February 7th at age 58 surrounded by family. She and Rick have two sons, Tyler Brownell and Justin Brownell. Nancy could be seen in Beacon often, and was known for her fashion and stylish shoes. She was involved with the Parade of Green, which this year, shares her birthday of March 9th, 2024.
