We Made It! Retail Therapy Guide - 9/18/2020

We did it! Beacon made it through the first week of school, being one of the few districts who is trying the Hybrid system of 2 days at school in person, and 2 days at home. Free meals for all children are prepared and provided by the district Food Services team (funded by the USDA through Dec. 31, 2020), and teachers are creating their own systems of working with their kids. Technological glitches happen, will always happen, and organizational systems will be reworked once they leave paper and are in practice.

Some families who opted for Hybrid changed their minds for health or logistic reasons to be 100% Home, and some families put children into different schools entirely.

As a community, and in the name of public school for all, we are figuring it out. So here is an all-caps HIGH-FIVE to those of you who are knee-deep in it. You deserve extra Retail Therapy this weekend!

TIN SHINGLE
Tin Shingle has launched a new initiative:  "Leave A Review Tuesday"
Tin Shingle is ALBB's sister company, and teaches businesses how to get the word out. As we hear from our small business friends of all sizes, we hear how damaging - or heartbreaking - a scathing online review can be. It cuts to the heart. So every Tuesday, Tin Shingle encourages its newsletter subscribers and social media followers to pick 1 business and leave a good review for them. It's easy to rant and rave. It's hard to remember to speak with positive thoughts.
PS: This Tuesday, if you have kids, email anyone in your district to say "Thank You. You're doing a great job. I know you are trying your best."

Happening This Weekend - 9/11/2020

THE SECOND SATURDAY GUIDE
Edited and Written By: Catherine Sweet

It’s a somber time, full of reflection but also action. Still dealing with the COVID pandemic, the country finds itself in a reckoning for racial justice, reexamining systems and traditions and practices that disproportionately benefit white people. We’re listening, and learning, and working to amplify the voices of those who traditionally haven’t had a seat at the table.

New York has been doing so well with bringing down the COVID illness rates as we move through the phases of reopening, that it feels like we’re creeping closer to The New Normal. But it’s no time to let our guards down. Phase 4 means that indoor establishments are still restricted. Most galleries are quite small and adequate ventilation continues to be an issue. So once again, the usual Main Street vigor of Second Saturday art happenings will be muted.

That doesn’t mean nothing is going on, though. If you’re heading out to a protest, get inspired to make your own sign with the chalk art created and/or shared by Moraya Seeger DeGeare (@tomyoldracistearth). Other local art happenings:

Taking precautions to protect their staff and visitors, many galleries remain closed. But there’s still plenty of art. Click here to see which venues, starting with Dia, for details on any online exhibitions we’re coming across.

Our Second Saturday Art Gallery Guide is sponsored by No. 3 Reading Room and Photo Book Works, at 469 Main Street, down toward the east end of Main Street near the Story Screen Beacon Theater. Owner Paulette Myers-Rich has set up a new exhibit in the storefront windows, and is still showing the previous artist online. Peruse it at your leisure!
Do you have an art opening coming up? Tell us about it: Drop a line to editorial@alittlebeaconblog.com with the who/what/when/where, and include a representative photo, to be considered for inclusion in this Guide.
A Little Beacon Blog is accepting long-term sponsors for the Second Saturday Guide. Please contact us if interested.

You've seen the challenge. You may have participated. The beautiful black and white photos of women, in the name of supporting women. But why this challenge? Why now? Because it is a revived trend of a challenge that the media is saying originated in Brazil, and now is in the name of Turkey - for women who are murdered by their spouses, boyfriends and other domestic violence results. The black and white represents life being snuffed out of color. If you jumped in too fast on this challenge, and didn't use the hashtags that support femicide going on in Turkey, or domestic abuse increases in the US due to COVID, then listen to Tin Shingle's TuneUp webinar on what to do when social media challenges come around. New Sustainably Farmed And Vegan Wine Store 'Dirty Bacchus' Opens On Main Street

You read that right! There’s a new wine store on Main Street specializing in wines that are low-intervention, organic or biodynamic, sustainably farmed and vegan.

On Saturday, June 27, Dirty Bacchus officially opened the doors on Main Street right next to The Beacon Pantry. Yes, an artisan cheese & charcuterie shop now conveniently placed next to a sustainable wine store- talk about a one stop shop! Whether you enjoy a fancy red, a cool white or a refreshing rosé, Dirty Bacchus has it all. The shop will soon carry Sake, Cider and Mead as well. I (Teslie) had the chance to interact with owner Steve Ventura, and immediately noticed his passion for fine wines and knowledge of his products.

He was gracious enough to share his story on “The How and Why of Dirty Bacchus” below:

So… I’ve been into wine for over four decades. In the late ‘90s and ‘00s I detoured into bourbon and then scotch and finally, very specifically, into independently bottled single malt scotch, about which, for years, I maintained a blog called The Maltfreak. Soon after moving from Southeastern Massachusetts to Beacon, I was contacted by someone opening a boutique wine and liquor store who wanted me to help choose his inventory of brown liquors. Once there, I was hired to clerk in the store and to consult on buying both liquor and wine. It was then, dealing with the reps from the different importers and wine vendors, that I started getting more deeply into natural wines - they were only a casual interest before that. Soon after, another buyer was hired at the store and she had an even stronger predilection for natural wines. I learned a great deal from her and, before long, I was drinking natural wines at home almost exclusively.

Then utterly exclusively!

As a co-owner of Quinn’s, I was never able to indulge my taste for natural wines because, well, it just never made sense to stock them in a beer-and-saki-centered rock and jazz club with a very small stock room and a Japanese menu.

One day in July last year, I was talking to a friend and Beacon business owner who was in the beginning stages of opening a small wine store at 380 Main Street - the address of Dirty Bacchus. She had run into some snags and, well, life itself, and could no longer deal with all the work and money and time involved in opening a new business. Her plate was more than full. Did I want to take over the lease and open the wine store myself, she asked? Right next to an amazing cheese shop? The landlords are friends of mine, so that was good. I told her I’d let her know in 24 hours. I talked to my wife Sue about it that night and we decided that such a project was worth the risk and might even be fun. By August 22, my application had been submitted to the State Liquor Authority and, a mere ten months later (!!!), with a global plague and an economic implosion intervening, my license was approved. It took about six or eight weeks to taste with dozens of wine reps, to decide on inventory - much of which I already knew I wanted to stock - and to open the store. My first day open to the public was June 27, 2020.

Walk-ins are limited to two customers at at time and they must wear masks and use the provided hand sanitizer before touching the bottles. Beacon being Beacon, nobody, so far, has had a problem with those restrictions.

There are three main reasons I decided to focus the store exclusively on natural, organic or biodynamic, vegan, low-intervention, sustainably farmed, non-commercial wines and wine makers. The first, of course, is the wine. The variety of textures, of gustatory surprises and pleasures, of fascinating and compelling aromas and tastes, seems endless in the category of natural wines. And to me, it just tastes better, more alive, fresher, more quenching, a beverage it is easy to imagine people drinking with their meals throughout the centuries - after all, the synthetic chemical agriculture so prevalent today is only 70 to 90 years old. Before that, all wine was organic and even, to some extent, biodynamic due to the ecological diversity of most farms before monocultural farming became commonplace.

But the second reason for the store’s narrow focus is the future. The future of the planet. My moment of utter conversion to natural wines came at the intersection of a bottle of biodynamic, zero sulfur Gamay wine made in Burgundy, France by vigneron François Ecot, and the book I was reading when I uncorked it - Cultural Insurrection: A Manifesto for the Arts, Agriculture and Natural Wine by Jonathan Nossiter. Combined, those two influences stripped wine of the exclusivity, arrogance and class pretensions that so often accompany it and revealed it for what is really is, an agricultural product, a very human product intended for common conviviality, one that must, like so much else, be made in the most sustainable manner possible if humanity is going to survive much longer on this planet. Natural wine making is a compelling, in-motion, working example of the changes in habit, materials and scale that must, as soon as possible, be applied universally.

As I state on our website (www.dirtybacchus.com): “We see Dirty Bacchus as a farm stand, as a place where farmers who devote themselves to the arduous hands-on cultivation of flourishing vineyards, and where winemakers who devote themselves to the transformation of those vineyards’ robust grapes into wine, get to display and sell the products of their toil and care.”

Which brings us to the third and final reason for the store’s focus: The types of people who are making natural wine. Nearly all of them are some combination of rock star, sage, poet, scholar and the coolest parents you knew of growing up. There are so many women, so many young people, so many husbands and wives and joyous eccentrics working together in the realms of organic and biodynamic agriculture and of natural winemaking - it is just so inspiring that it fills me with hope for the future. And hope for the future is something truly precious right now.

To end, I would like to thank all the people who have helped and inspired me, but especially these three: My wife Sue, who heard every wild idea I had for the store and patiently guided me to the ideas we could actually afford and put into place, and two of the best friends any man could have - Rob Penner (www.beaconfineartprinting.com), art photographer and printer extraordinaire, and David Smolen, artist and finest of fine woodworkers. Without their skills, their tireless work, their patience and their generosity, I could never have realized the dream come true that is now Dirty Bacchus.

Itching For Second Saturday - Happening This Weekend: 7/10/2020

We know...We know...you want your Second Saturday experience, and you want it now. So do the artists! They want to reach you. But we're still in Pandemic Land, so artists are getting creative. A Little Beacon Blog's Second Saturday Editor, Catherine Sweet has hunted around, and found a new window display from the ever-so-careful No. 3 Reading Room and Photo Book Works, who's literary and artistic experience usually invite touch or closeness with paper. This exhibit features a Beacon artist, Edwin Torres. Learn all about it here.

Phase 4 has brought back the arts with restrictions.  Museums are opening and galleries are slowly opening up on Main Street.  We have a few openings this weekend - in person, online, and even art show window displays.
CLUTTER
163 Main Street

Clutter Gallery is excited to present Silent Killer, a Mr. KumKum solo show. Says Clutter: "This event marks Mr KumKum's first US solo show!! Comprised of five micro runs of hand-painted masterpieces, the selection includes pop culture icons, a snake in disguise, explosives, insects and more!"
Clutter's Social Distancing Guidelines: "Due to the ongoing coronavirus situation we will only be allowing in ten guests at a time. NO ONE will be admitted without a mask, so please make sure you are prepared. We ask that everyone observe social distancing rules both inside and outside the gallery."

ARTIST STANLEY LINDWASSER HAS PASSED
You last saw one of Stanley's exhibits at Oak Vino. But you may have seen Stanley himself walking up and down Main Street, as he often did with his little dog. Recently, he would have had his oxygen attached to him to help him make it through the walk. In May, Stanley has passed away from pulmonary fibrosis.

The Back Together Guide - 7/3/2020

You still have many choices of things to do this weekend, even though, fireworks in Beacon have been postponed this year.  Below in our Events listings are three alternative locations you can watch fireworks from this year. You can read more about it in this article

Have you seen an increase in chalk-art today? Look for more this weekend. Moraya Seeger DaGeare, the granddaughter of Pete Seeger, is spearheading a city-wide protest project - "To My Old Racist Earth," inviting residents and local businesses to action again social injustice through street art. Whether it's chalk art, signs, posters, murals, the weather this weekend should be dry. Get the full scoop about Moraya and #ToMyOldRacistEarth in this article.

“To My Old Racist Earth Art” Project
Day

Time: All Day

Organized by the granddaughter of Pete Seeger, on July 3rd (hopefully not a rainy day) we will take to the streets, driveways, sidewalks and parking lots, to draw art that highlights marginalized groups. The name of this project is a play on the title of the Pete Seeger song, “To My Old Brown Earth." It can be chalk art, or you can paint your own signs and put them in your yards, front doors, and windows. This can mean #BlackLivesMatter-inspired art. It can also mean anything that speaks to the corrupt system we are breaking down. Here is a great example from The Studio @ Beacon

- The Beacon Pool is closed for this season. Social distancing would be too hard to enforce. Can you imagine? You know what happens when there's you-know-what in the pool and people have to wait to go back in...Enforcing 6" daily would be...a high school dance nightmare.
- Playgrounds and ball courts in Beacon's parks are now accessible.
- New enhancements to Green Street Park and Riverfront Park are happening. Get details here.

ANTALEK & MOORE
Antalek and Moore Insurance Agency wants to make sure you know about a pandemic-based credit that has been issued by several insurance companies for auto-insurance. To ease the financial burden, insurance companies like Travelers have issued a 15% Stay At Home credit for April, May and June statements to bank accounts connected with the billing system, or sent checks home. If you have questions about if you received this, or if your insurance company provided it, call Antalek and Moore today. Most credits were automatic, so there was nothing you needed to do. Please note, this only happened with participating auto insurance companies that Antalek and Moore represents. They can also help you switch carriers if you want to feel the love from a different carrier.

*Please note, if this event is in person, we cannot guarantee a listing of it, if we think the social distancing compliance is not enough, or being taken seriously.

Juneteenth Celebrations, Happening This Weekend, AND Retail Therapy Guide! - 6/19/2020

Juneteenth commemorates the emancipation of the last remaining enslaved African Americans in the Confederacy in 1865 - two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was formally issued. Juneteenth is also known as Black Independence Day, Emancipation Day, Freedom Day, Juneteenth Independence Day or Juneteenth National Freedom Day (a Union general rode to Texas to deliver the very late memo, to that state who was not enforcing the freedom law). Governor Cuomo announced he's proposing to make Juneteenth a NY State holiday beginning 2021. Mayor Kyriacou made it official in Beacon.

This weekend there will be several events to hear from your community and learn about the history of this date that is not often discussed in school.  Click on the individual fliers below for a closer view and see details below in our Events Guide listings. Tonight in Beacon at 6:30pm is a Juneteenth Celebration March/Protest that starts at Pohill Park, goes down Main Street, and ends at Memorial Park for food, beverages and a celebration.

And Happy Father's Day!

True Story:
Get the latest from the Beacon Recreation Center.

The Retail Therapy Guide - 6/12/2020

In addition to our event and retail information for you, we have been working on a police news newsletter that brings you up to speed on the developments that happened in anti-racism and police brutality in Beacon this week. That will get delivered tomorrow.

This weekend is the Phase 2 Reopening weekend. Which is on the one hand exciting (yay, stay in business! yay, see your friends!) is also one that comes with caution because the virus is still getting people sick. Even at A Little Beacon Blog, we each feel varying degrees of caution and develop our own safety plans of what feels safe or responsible to us. As you are too.

Even though we want to jump up and down for joy, we're taking the road of: "Just be careful." Businesses are starting to let customers in their doors - with new safety measures of course and limited capacity. Restaurants are getting creative with their outdoor dining options, barbershops and salons are booking appointments, and places of worship can re-open at 25% capacity

Whether you're dining out, shopping, or protesting - social distancing is still recommended as we are still in the middle of a pandemic. Don't leave home this weekend without your masks or face coverings! Businesses have the right to not allow you inside without them - just think of it like "No Shirt, No Shoes, No Service" only add masks to that too. Don't like your face mask? No problem! Start your collection by checking out our list of where you can buy masks from mask makers in Beacon and around the area.

PS: Oregon just paused their Reopening because their number of daily new infections got too high, and those Californians just really don't care that their numbers keep climbing! Stay safe, and keep the curve flat so that we can continue to make this Reopening happen and stay open :)

PTACEK HOME

Sad news from PTACEK Home: "After much deliberation, we have decided to close our Beacon location of Ptacek Home. We have loved being a part of the Beacon community, but sadly, we will be leaving as of June 15th. We will continue to sell our furniture line as well as custom furniture as we have in the past - but will have to do so without a storefront for now. For now, we will be focusing our time on our custom home building company:
Thomas Jerome Inc. www.thomasjeromeinc.com."
Beaconites: now is the time to visit their little shop down the winding path down by Mountain Tops. Clean them out of furniture inventory, and make their move-out easier.

Alas, you can always find LLTO online, and they are having a 15% off sale IRL (In Real Life). You can go into the store! Friday, Saturday & Sunday 11am-6pm. Says Tamara: "We are proud to be a Hudson Valley business and will still make local deliveries available for our Beacon, Cold Spring & Garrison Family!"
