Ice This Time :: Retail Therapy Guide 2/5/2022

Did you venture outside or on the roads today (Friday)?. The sheet of ice made it difficult! Several places were closed as Beacon's plows were out and Central Hudson worked to restore power to over 50,000 customers (several in Ulster County, read more about it here). The strip of stores that house Beacon Dental and Sal's Pizza was open (orthodontist appointments show no mercy! but pizza after is nice) and the mail got delivered.

Because it's Black History Month every day, we have added 3 new Black Owned Businesses to A Little Beacon Blog's Business Directory: Max's Fade & Shave Barbershop, Speechless New York Auto Detail, and Zhane's Palette Studio. Read more about them here!

You can add your business at any time at different price-points as a sponsor of A Little Beacon Blog. People love coming to this directory to find who they should hire!

Sheldrake’s vivid exploration takes us from yeast to psychedelics, to the fungi that range for miles underground and are the largest organisms on the planet, to those that link plants together in complex networks known as the ‘Wood Wide Web,’ to those that infiltrate and manipulate insect bodies with devastating precision.” “A mind-bending journey into the hidden universe of fungi, “one of those rare books that can truly change the way you see the world around you.” (Helen Macdonald, ‘H is for Hawk’)

Snow Scrapers and Other Things :: Retail Therapy Guide 1/28/2022

Beacon! Before you think of not venturing out tomorrow because of the forecasted blizzard, just remember that our retail friends are very good at shoveling out and clearing sidewalks so that you can come.
Pro Tip: You may want to walk everywhere because it's easier, so get your snow boots on! Parking will be...why. Just walk! If you can walk. Anyone who has lived at one time in NYC will know that we walk everywhere. Wheelchair riders will need help, so reach out to friends in need.

For those Beacon locals who have cars and driveways: a reminder to not park your car on the street. The plow trucks need to barrel through to clear streets. And it's a Beacon rule that when there is more than 2" of snow, you can't park on the street. You can park in the free municipal lots, which do have new signage so that you can find them better. You will need to dig your car out and move your car within a period of time.

SNOW SHOVELING TIPS:
  • Don't Put Street Snow On Sidewalk: If your car is parked in the street and you need to dig it out, don't shovel the snow onto the sidewalk. Your neighbor will be clearing the sidewalk.
  • Citations: At a recent City Council Meeting, the current City Administrator told residents to shovel their sidewalks within a time-frame, as the city might be coming out to issue citations. Not clear on who that personnel would be, since they are so busy plowing the streets, inspecting buildings, and doing new speed traffic duty, but he's taking notice.
  • Elderly: Offer to help your elderly neighbors. Even the neighbors who don't seem elderly, but really are 65 and could use your sprightly energy!
  • Cold Weather: If you don't shovel all of the way, the snow might turn to slush and then freeze, like it did for Beacon's first real snowfall for 2022. Then you are stuck with mounds of ice. So frustrating.
  • Reward Yourself: With hot chocolate from Beacon Bread, wine, chocolate cake, a fresh candle from Beacon Mercantile, anything. Shoveling is a lot of work!

TWO WAY BREWING COMPANY
18 West Main St.

Rich and strong, the Darkness Squared is a full value coffee stout! Tantalizing aromas of chocolate covered coffee beans introduce complex flavors of roasted malt and caramel.  A dash of oats lends a smooth creaminess, and the whole thing wraps up with a surprisingly clean finish for a stout of this magnitude.  A respectable seven and a half percent alcohol by volume will keep you warm while a generous dose of coffee provided by friends at Bank Square Coffeehouse will keep you going.  Though warmer weather is surely on its way, there is still time to take solace in the cold and darkness squared before then.  Stop in and give it a try!

BINNACLE BOOKS
321 Main Street, Beacon

“We Owe You Nothing: ‘Punk Planet,’ The Collected Interviews” ed. Daniel Sinker available at Binnacle Books.
“The first compilation of the riveting and provocative interviews of ‘Punk Planet’ magazine, which was founded in 1994 and charged unbowed into the new millennium. Never lapsing into hapless nostalgia, these conversations with figures as diverse as Jello Biafra, Kathleen Hanna, Noam Chomsky, Henry Rollins, Sleater-Kinney, Ian MacKaye, and many more provide a unique perspective into American punk rock and all it has inspired (and confounded). Not limited to conversations with musicians, the book includes vital interviews with political organizers, punk entrepreneurs, designers, filmmakers, writers, illustrators, and artists of many different media.”

Retail Therapy Guide 1/7/2022

WooHoo!
We typed the New Year of 2022 correctly into the subject line! Hope you had a great week, and that some of you are enjoying this Snow Day, Beacon's first school closure of the year. Last Sunday to start the big week back to school, the district distributed test kits, and on Monday reported on results.

On Wednesday, Dutchess County alerted the media about the second limited supply shipment of test kits and masks to municipalities. On Thursday, the City of Beacon distributed their share at the Howland Public Library, which were gone in a few hours. There is discussion of making the next distribution at night for commuters.

Giving an extra hug to all of the teachers and to any employees who are out sick with COVID-19 right now. Sending you on-the-mend vibes.

Giving an extra squeeze to health care workers who are showing up to provide life-saving services during this pandemic, amid staffing shortages. Thank You.

Many in-person events have been switching to virtual this week. Even the Beacon Farmers Market is closed this Sunday for upcoming weather (so order your eggs, beef, lamb and chicken now from Farmer Carrie of Eggberts Free Range Farm so she can deliver free to you!).

Seems like a great time to snuggle in, order out, and stream Governor Hochul's State of the State to learn about her plan to once again allow Cocktails To Go. Hop in and out of shops in Beacon to pick up cutie things to wear and entertain yourself with (see below for suggestions!).

This Sunday is the Celebration of Life Ceremony Funeral for "Scout" Rene Vivo, the iconic Beaconite who touched so many lives - even silently and without words - who was stabbed on Christmas Day. His family has been in touch with ALBB to get the invitation to you about his ceremony. They fundraised from the community to pay for his final wishes. Read ALBB's send-off article for Rene here, as part of the healing and grief that many are feeling.

Today, there are 5,683 Active COVID-19 Cases in Dutchess County, a slight decrease from the over 6,000 there were earlier this week. There are 225 Active Cases in Beacon, and 702 in East Fishkill. There are 147 people in the hospital as of today being treated for COVID-19.

Blessings this Friday.

BINNACLE BOOKS
321 Main Street, Beacon

Jeremy Dauber, “American Comics: A History” available at Binnacle!
“In ‘American Comics’, Columbia professor Jeremy Dauber takes readers through their incredible but little-known history, starting with the Civil War and cartoonist Thomas Nast, creator of the lasting and iconic images of Uncle Sam and Santa Claus; the golden age of newspaper comic strips and the first great superhero boom; the moral panic of the Eisenhower era, the Marvel Comics revolution, and the underground comix movement of the 1960s and ’70s; and finally into the twenty-first century, taking in the grim and gritty Dark Knights and Watchmen alongside the brilliant rise of the graphic novel by acclaimed practitioners like Art Spiegelman and Alison Bechdel. Dauber’s story shows not only how comics have changed over the decades but how American politics and culture have changed them. Throughout, he describes the origins of beloved comics, champions neglected masterpieces, and argues that we can understand how America sees itself through whose stories comics tell. Striking and revelatory, ‘American Comics’ is a rich chronicle of the last 150 years of American history through the lens of its comic strips, political cartoons, superheroes, graphic novels, and more.” _

...and....GO...Retail Therapy Guide 12/21/2021

Friends!! You've been in the hustle and the bustle that is the end of December. We've seen you out there, filling the shops of Beacon with your hungry eyes, delighted at the curated experiences shop owners have created for your careful gift giving.

Last year was so crushing, yet we stuck together and  got creative and supported the heck out of our business and nonprofit friends. We have done it again this year, during the same pandemic, different stresses (like the rapid rise in demand for COVID-19 tests that arrived to the Beacon PD that will most likely arrive again at some point).

This year, you all cared hard. So hard. You love this community and you want to see it stay open and inclusive for all budgets to rent and own homes here. You are doing what you can to learn about your community and your neighbors - to broaden your life so that the goodness can expand to lifestyles you have not experienced yet.

That is the beauty of Beacon, and we here at ALBB are honored to serve you. ALBB is a free publication to all and always will be. We make money in different ways, like through website design, branding and strategy, and sponsorships. Thank you to all of our sponsors now and over the years. Thank you Poughkeepsie Day School for coming on as a new sponsor this week! All sponsors allow us to report freely and in the directions needed. ALBB does accept contributions from readers, and we really are just so grateful for all of your readership support.

Because you are so AMAZING, and you wish for more Traffic Safety, we can report that there is more Traffic Safety coming for Xmas - more Stop Signs are arriving in select back roads. Several articles are coming out in the name of Traffic Safety. Some sad. Some mad. Some glad. Thank you for being along for the ride. Pun intended.

xoxo

A Silent Night Getting Closer :: Retail Therapy Guide 12/17/2021

The countdown to Christmas is really real and if you're still trying to figure out what to get someone, Beacon is filled with the best shops, and what's better than supporting local & shopping small?! See ALBB's Shopping Guide to better organize your thoughts/find exactly what you're looking for!

This cutie-pie photo is of a Pre-K project from Glenham Elementary! See ALBB's Instagram Stories for a closeup of the little pine-cone snow-person up close!

PS: The COVID-19 count in Dutchess County has doubled what it was in the summer. In August, ALBB sent you a notice that the active case count was in the high 700s or low 800s. Today, the active case count is 1,487 people, with 68 people in the hospital, and 65 active cases in Beacon. In East Fishkill, there are 213 active cases. This article explores what Dutchess County is doing.

Have a blessed Friday :)

Show Up and Speak Out for Good Cause Eviction Protections
Day: Monday, December 20, 2021
Time: Caroling for Tenant's Rights at 6pm at Pohill Park & City Council Meeting at 6:30pm at City Hall
Location: Pohill Park & City Hall, Beacon, NY
Masks Required
The organizers of this outdoor event have been regularly showing up at City Council Meetings to pressure the administration to do more to create affordable housing situations. Beacon's Mayor Lee Kyriacou has wanted to accelerate one of his tools in the tool box - making building small apartments on one's property easier (aka Accessory Dwellings Units ADUs). His rational is that the apartments can rent for a low price because they are in theory "small." Most Councilmembers don't see how this is possible, and in fact, want Beacon to pursue enforcement of illegal Airbnbs (owners own more than one property and are short term renting those additional properties). Members of the public have been showing up to demand that the focus be on passing a law called Good Cause Eviction, as another layer of protection for renters. More and more, renters are being pushed out of Beacon, replaced by those who can pay higher prices. Say the organizers: "The City has been ignoring the housing crisis. Don't let this Be a Silent Night for tenant protections!!"

Veterans and Main Street :: Retail Therapy Guide 11/21/2021

All 3 media outlets covering Beacon (Beacon Free Press, Highlands Current, ALBB) stopped and focused on the new mural on the Dutchess County DMV building on Main Street that is thanking veterans. It is a daily reminder to smile, say thank you, outreach to a veteran if you know one or know how. In the Beacon Free Press version of this coverage, catch an interview with the muralist as she paints it.

Beacon Free Press Columnist and Veteran Tom Zurhellen writes enthusiastically almost every week about how to help veterans. In this week's column, he points out that nearly 40,000 veterans are homeless (the Military Times cites 37,252). In Beacon, one might not know who is a homeless veteran as they walk by someone. So as you walk by the Memorial Building especially, give someone a sunny "Hello."

An easy way to help make veterans in this area more comfortable is to donate to their food pantry in Castle Point. We have details on how to do this in A Little Beacon Blog's Food Pantry and Soup Kitchen Guide here.

Speaking of the Memorial Building, this Veterans Day, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Pvt Wm. B. Wilson Post 666 hosted their annual ceremony, which you can watch here on the City of Beacon's Vimeo channel. VFW Post 666 celebrated their 100th year this year, and were presented with Proclamations from New York State, which you can read about here.

HOMESPUN
232 Main Street, Beacon, NY

Homespun is a specialty wine seller as part of their regionally popular restaurant. Owner Joe Robitaille earned early experience at Montague Wine & Spirits in Brooklyn Heights, moving to a sommelier position with Il Buco in Manhattan. Joe was raised in Buffalo, NY, and educated in Charleston, SC. He moved to New York City to pursue a Master of Fine Arts in Poetry at Brooklyn College, where he discovered his love for wine. But not just wine - the agriculture of wine - after a placement with WWOOF (World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms). When the original Homespun was for sale, Joe and his wife Kate fell in love with the opportunity, and moved their family to Beacon. Joe and the staff have been developing the wine side of Homespun ever since. Find out more >

DIRTY BACCHUS
380 Main Street, Beacon

Ignasi Segul / Vinyes Singulars / Pim Pam Pink 2020 / Catalonia, Spain - While this meets every definition of biodynamic Natural Wine, it is also, remarkably, the result of the 600th grape harvest performed on this Penedes estate by the family behind Vinyes Singulars, who have lived on and worked this soil since the year 1405. Made with blend of organic, biodynamically farmed Xarel.lo, Macabeu, Parellada, Malvasia Sitges, Garnatxa Blanca, Sumoll Tinto and Sumoll Blanc, each variety added to the fermentation vat separately as it becomes ready to harvest, spontaneously fermented on skins, bottled unfined and unfiltered with no additions whatsoever, this is almost pulpy in texture with a pronounced but not aggressive acidity, some tannic grip, a nose of peaches and pink grapefruit, earth and slate, herbs and the brighter cooking spices, with surprisingly soft flavors of citrus and stone fruits and a very long finish. Natty refreshment! Follow @dirtybacchus for all wine reviews!

BINNACLE BOOKS
321 Main Street, Beacon

Ai Weiwei, “1000 Years of Joys and Sorrows,” trans. Allan Barr from Binnacle!
“Remembering, too, is a form of resistance. In documenting the past, he is also repudiating the country’s generations of imposed amnesia. ‘After all the convulsions that China had experienced, genuine emotions and personal memory were reduced to tiny scraps and easily replaced by the discourse of struggle and continuous revolution,’ Ai writes. In ‘1000 Years of Joys and Sorrows,’ Ai does not allow his own scraps to remain buried. To unearth them is an act of unburdening, an open letter to progeny, a suturing of past and present. It is the refusal to be a pawn — and the most potent assertion of a self.” -The New York Times _

Immersive Climate Theater Experience Comes To Long Dock Park: "Climate Change Theatre Action 2021"

SOON IS NOW is an immersive climate theater experience paired with activism presented in Scenic Hudson's Long Dock Park Beacon, NY on Saturday afternoon October 23rd, as part of the Climate Solutions Week (October 17-24) sponsored by Sustainable Hudson Valley. Theatrical performers showing their activism through spoken word and movement, and many of your favorite climate justice and education groups have come together to present solutions in a theatrical way called Climate Change Theatre Action 2021.

Hudson Valley and NYC based artists will read a selection of plays commissioned by Climate Change Theatre Action, a worldwide series of performances of short climate change plays presented biennially to coincide with the United Nations COP meetings. In addition, actors will read a portion of full length play and eco-parable, Escapegoat, by May Treuhaft-Ali. There will be poetry readings by Edwin Torres and Tom King, music by Elizabeth Clark (Seeds Under Nuclear Winter: An Earth Opera) and visual art and activism. Additional participants include: Hudson River Playback Theatre, Katiana Rangel, Twinkle Burke, Andrew Brehm, Chloé Hayat, abigail jean baptiste, Eric Magnus, Jean Brennan. Beacon Conservation Advisory Committee, Sustainable Hudson Valley, Fareground, Clearwater, Climate Reality Hudson Valley & Catskills chapter and others will be present to provide ways for the community to take action.

Schedule:

1pm Activism & Art: Environmental groups present to provide actions & Beacon based artist Jean Brennan will share FRUIT&ROT, an imprint centered around art and ecology.

2:00pm Performance Walking Loops: Sign ups begin at 1:30pm for the 3 walking tours of micro-performances that will take you along the wooded paths, tall grasses, and beach areas of the park. Tours start at 2pm, 2:15pm, and 2:30pm and last approximately one hour. 20 ppl max each tour and first-come, first-served. These tours are not catered towards young children. We can provide masks. Wear comfortable shoes!

2:15pm Sitting/Standing Performances: performances by Hudson River Playback Theatre, Edwin Torres, and Twinkle Burke will take place around the perimeter of the green field next to the Long Dock. These 3 performances are open to all including young children! They will take place in a loop and last until approximately 3:30pm. Bring your folding chair!

Parking Recommendations

Parking in Long Dock is limited. Walking, carpooling and the Free Beacon Loop Bus are encouraged. The Loop Bus drops you at the train station, and you can walk over to Long Dock. The best place to park is in the train station on the side closest to the Hudson River, where all spots are free on the weekends!

Remembering and Seeking :: The Retail Therapy Guide 9/10/2021

Things To Do In BeaconGuide.png
Tomorrow (Saturday) is 9/11, the culmination of September days leading up to this moment, mixed with first day of school excitement and raw emotions that come with that for parents, kids, educators and staff. Happy Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year that happened this week, and Happy Muḥarram, the Islamic New Year that happened in August.

This year is the 20th Anniversary of 9/11, and circumstances are very different. Americans and the world watched the departure of American troops from Afghanistan, and have been learning about the varied emotions that is bringing to veterans and people who have been investing in Afghanistan to be part of building infrastructure and societal systems in Afghanistan. American women watching Afghan women protest the Taliban is opening a new chapter in this "war on terror." Does the war on terror include all skin colors, including those on January 6th at the U.S. Capitol?

Seeking a perspective from other people this year might be something to consider when deeply reflecting on the loss that occurred that day. Consider reading this article on Deadline from the makers of "Ramy," a show on Hulu starring Ramy Youssef (winner of a Golden Globe and Peabody Award) and producer Maytha Albassen: "‘Ramy’ Star & Producer On 9/11 Aftermath, Arab American Muslims & A Real Bite Into “Strawberries”"

Local Beaconite author Olivia Abel has been working at Guidposts, and just published a story on the Fireboat McKean that saved hundreds of people that day, has the strangest history of always being in the right place at the right time, despite being decommissioned. The fireboat is being turned into a floating museum. Maybe we'll see it up here in Beacon?

Olivia starts the article out with: "I heard lots of stories on 9/11. I was a reporter at People magazine in New York City then; that day we scrapped the weekly issue that was slated to close that night and put out a special commemorative 9/11 issue instead. I reported on the phone, hearing harrowing tales of regular people on hijacked planes calling to say goodbye to their loved ones. I reported from the streets in midtown Manhattan, where dazed New Yorkers milled about telling me about narrow escapes, missing loved ones and amazing stories of strangers taking people into their cars and their homes. By the time I left the office at 5:30 a.m. the following day, the sun was dawning on a city—and a world—that would never be the same. My mind was full of incredible stories of unimaginable tragedy, as well as unimaginable heroics.

"But until recently, I had never heard a story about an amazing boat that rescued hundreds of people on that fateful day." The firefighters on boat rescued people in the darkness of the fallen towers, and was able to pump water from the Hudson River when water main pipes had broken. It could pump the equivalent of 18-20 fire engine trucks. Read her article on the Fireboat here.

Cupcakes and the Retail Therapy Guide 3/19/2021

Happy Weekend To You!

We are going to kick this weekend newsletter off with a picture of...carrot cake cupcakes, because cupcakes are good and happy. These are from Homespun, and available to order online to reserve yours (we swiped 3 of them after taking this photo, so...)

Most importantly, however, we wanted to address Atlanta and what our Asian friends in Beacon are experiencing as reactions to this unfold. What hasn't been spoken about much locally is how friends whose families are from Japan, or China, or the Philippines or other areas are feeling, or what kind of encounters they have endured while walking on sidewalks since the pandemic started and a former president attempted to connect a pandemic with a region.

We are quietly hearing from our friends, and they are asking for support. They want to see their friends say supportive things in social media, and to denounce things like a police captain explaining that a murderer had a "bad day." That captain was later discovered to have posted his own belief of the region connection to the pandemic, and even supported t-shirts of it.

Not sure where to start? Try asking your friends where their families are from, to get more comfortable with regions. Next, listen to this webinar with Moraya Seeger DeGeare, a Beaconite who is Black, Japanese and white, and engages in talking about race issues in a safe space.

BUSINESS FEATURE - HOME INSPECTIONS IN REAL ESTATE
A Little Beacon Blog's Business Directory contains categories in Real Estate for business features like Staging, Realtors, Mortgage Lenders, and House Inspections. People can find businesses on Google, but ALBB readers like going to our directory to see which businesses have listed themselves in this space. Help your business stand out by advertising your business in ALBB's Business Directory.

Featured Business: Rizzi Home Inspection Services, Inc. is who you can call to inspect a house before you buy it. If you're a first-time home-buyer, the House Inspection is part of the process. Says owner Louis Rizzi Jr.,: "As Owner and Operator, I provide professional Home Inspections while educating you on the condition of the home by answering any questions or concerns you may have, relieving you of stress and allowing you to make an informed buying decision."

TIN SHINGLE
Renowned relationship therapist, Moraya Seeger DeGeare, MA, LMFT, specializes in Emotionally Focused Therapy in gender and race identification in one's self. While she herself is Black, Japanese and white, Moraya had not been that outspoken about race, outside of her private work with clients. This year has changed that. In this Tin Shingle TuneUp webinar, Moraya speaks with Tin Shingle and ALBB owner Katie Hellmuth Martin about how to talk about race out loud, when you don't know how to talk about it. While people want a safe space in which to practice speaking, others need to feel a safe space coming from silence.

KATIE JAMES, INC.
Sneak Peek! Meyers Olde Dutch is "refreshing" their Main Street Location (that's an understatement...we've seen pictures of the concrete being poured) and connected with Katie James, Inc. to give their print and website branding a refresh too. We are so thrilled, because in between eating their fried chicken sandwiches, we get to test new designs on them. Like this one for their future "Cocktails" menu!
