Welcome to another installment of Friday Snow Day In Beacon! You needed another winter workout, right? Just as the daffodils were beginning to shoot out of the ground, a snow-sleet blanketed them. Dutchess County announced its preparation, and the Beacon City School District closed. Don't think this is it - there were a couple years in a row when snowfall withered the magnolia blossoms. Meanwhile, Beacon's Annual Parade of Green is back on the event schedule! This annual parade marked the first parade that was closed days after the pandemic was being declared (read about that memory lane here). Beacon has not approved any parade in the two years of the pandemic. The first one to launch was the inaugural Beacon Spring Celebration Of Light sidewalk parade last weekend, which was cold and blustery but very warm in spirit and fun. The Beacon Parade of Green is a symbolic come-back. A Gift Guide! :: Retail Therapy + Things To Do Guide 2/11/2022

It's here! A Little Beacon Blog's first Gift Guide in quite some time. For Valentine's Day, this one focuses on some shops on Beacon's East End near the mountain. There is some very serious shopping down there, from high end to vintage, to world famous chocolate to marshmallows to even rentable fashion. In other news, Beacon is warming up to events as the indoor mask mandate in business comes down (for now) and the ice melts (before another snowfall?), with the introduction of a new lantern celebration concept is introduced from a group calling themselves the Beacon Spring. Snow Scrapers and Other Things :: Retail Therapy Guide 1/28/2022

Beacon! Before you think of not venturing out tomorrow because of the forecasted blizzard, just remember that our retail friends are very good at shoveling out and clearing sidewalks so that you can come. Pro Tip: You may want to walk everywhere because it's easier, so get your snow boots on! Parking will be...why. Just walk! If you can walk. Anyone who has lived at one time in NYC will know that we walk everywhere. Wheelchair riders will need help, so reach out to friends in need. For those Beacon locals who have cars and driveways: a reminder to not park your car on the street. The plow trucks need to barrel through to clear streets. And it's a Beacon rule that when there is more than 2" of snow, you can't park on the street. You can park in the free municipal lots, which do have new signage so that you can find them better. You will need to dig your car out and move your car within a period of time. SNOW SHOVELING TIPS: Don't Put Street Snow On Sidewalk: If your car is parked in the street and you need to dig it out, don't shovel the snow onto the sidewalk. Your neighbor will be clearing the sidewalk. Citations: At a recent City Council Meeting, the current City Administrator told residents to shovel their sidewalks within a time-frame, as the city might be coming out to issue citations. Not clear on who that personnel would be, since they are so busy plowing the streets, inspecting buildings, and doing new speed traffic duty, but he's taking notice. Elderly: Offer to help your elderly neighbors. Even the neighbors who don't seem elderly, but really are 65 and could use your sprightly energy! Cold Weather: If you don't shovel all of the way, the snow might turn to slush and then freeze, like it did for Beacon's first real snowfall for 2022. Then you are stuck with mounds of ice. So frustrating. Reward Yourself: With hot chocolate from Beacon Bread, wine, chocolate cake, a fresh candle from Beacon Mercantile, anything. Shoveling is a lot of work! Retail Therapy Guide 1/7/2022

WooHoo! We typed the New Year of 2022 correctly into the subject line! Hope you had a great week, and that some of you are enjoying this Snow Day, Beacon's first school closure of the year. Last Sunday to start the big week back to school, the district distributed test kits, and on Monday reported on results. On Wednesday, Dutchess County alerted the media about the second limited supply shipment of test kits and masks to municipalities. On Thursday, the City of Beacon distributed their share at the Howland Public Library, which were gone in a few hours. There is discussion of making the next distribution at night for commuters. Giving an extra hug to all of the teachers and to any employees who are out sick with COVID-19 right now. Sending you on-the-mend vibes. Giving an extra squeeze to health care workers who are showing up to provide life-saving services during this pandemic, amid staffing shortages. Thank You. Many in-person events have been switching to virtual this week. Even the Beacon Farmers Market is closed this Sunday for upcoming weather (so order your eggs, beef, lamb and chicken now from Farmer Carrie of Eggberts Free Range Farm so she can deliver free to you!). Seems like a great time to snuggle in, order out, and stream Governor Hochul's State of the State to learn about her plan to once again allow Cocktails To Go. This Sunday is the Celebration of Life Ceremony Funeral for "Scout" Rene Vivo, the iconic Beaconite who touched so many lives - even silently and without words - who was stabbed on Christmas Day. His family has been in touch with ALBB to get the invitation to you about his ceremony. They fundraised from the community to pay for his final wishes. Today, there are 5,683 Active COVID-19 Cases in Dutchess County, a slight decrease from the over 6,000 there were earlier this week. There are 225 Active Cases in Beacon, and 702 in East Fishkill. Beacon's Mayor Lee Kyriacou has wanted to accelerate one of his tools in the tool box - making building small apartments on one's property easier (aka Accessory Dwellings Units ADUs). His rational is that the apartments can rent for a low price because they are in theory "small." Most Councilmembers don't see how this is possible, and in fact, want Beacon to pursue enforcement of illegal Airbnbs (owners own more than one property and are short term renting those additional properties). Members of the public have been showing up to demand that the focus be on passing a law called Good Cause Eviction, as another layer of protection for renters. More and more, renters are being pushed out of Beacon, replaced by those who can pay higher prices. Say the organizers: "The City has been ignoring the housing crisis. Don't let this Be a Silent Night for tenant protections!!" Veterans and Main Street :: Retail Therapy Guide 11/21/2021

All 3 media outlets covering Beacon (Beacon Free Press, Highlands Current, ALBB) stopped and focused on the new mural on the Dutchess County DMV building on Main Street that is thanking veterans. It is a daily reminder to smile, say thank you, outreach to a veteran if you know one or know how. In the Beacon Free Press version of this coverage, catch an interview with the muralist as she paints it. Beacon Free Press Columnist and Veteran Tom Zurhellen writes enthusiastically almost every week about how to help veterans. In this week's column, he points out that nearly 40,000 veterans are homeless (the Military Times cites 37,252). In Beacon, one might not know who is a homeless veteran as they walk by someone. So as you walk by the Memorial Building especially, give someone a sunny "Hello." An easy way to help make veterans in this area more comfortable is to donate to their food pantry in Castle Point. Immersive Climate Theater Experience Comes To Long Dock Park: "Climate Change Theatre Action 2021"

SOON IS NOW is an immersive climate theater experience paired with activism presented in Scenic Hudson's Long Dock Park Beacon, NY on Saturday afternoon October 23rd, as part of the Climate Solutions Week (October 17-24) sponsored by Sustainable Hudson Valley. Theatrical performers showing their activism through spoken word and movement, and many of your favorite climate justice and education groups have come together to present solutions in a theatrical way called Climate Change Theatre Action 2021.

Hudson Valley and NYC based artists will read a selection of plays commissioned by Climate Change Theatre Action, a worldwide series of performances of short climate change plays presented biennially to coincide with the United Nations COP meetings. In addition, actors will read a portion of full length play and eco-parable, Escapegoat, by May Treuhaft-Ali. There will be poetry readings by Edwin Torres and Tom King, music by Elizabeth Clark (Seeds Under Nuclear Winter: An Earth Opera) and visual art and activism. Additional participants include: Hudson River Playback Theatre, Katiana Rangel, Twinkle Burke, Andrew Brehm, Chloé Hayat, abigail jean baptiste, Eric Magnus, Jean Brennan. Beacon Conservation Advisory Committee, Sustainable Hudson Valley, Fareground, Clearwater, Climate Reality Hudson Valley & Catskills chapter and others will be present to provide ways for the community to take action.

Schedule:

1pm Activism & Art: Environmental groups present to provide actions & Beacon based artist Jean Brennan will share FRUIT&ROT, an imprint centered around art and ecology.

2:00pm Performance Walking Loops: Sign ups begin at 1:30pm for the 3 walking tours of micro-performances that will take you along the wooded paths, tall grasses, and beach areas of the park. Tours start at 2pm, 2:15pm, and 2:30pm and last approximately one hour. 20 ppl max each tour and first-come, first-served. These tours are not catered towards young children. We can provide masks. Wear comfortable shoes!

2:15pm Sitting/Standing Performances: performances by Hudson River Playback Theatre, Edwin Torres, and Twinkle Burke will take place around the perimeter of the green field next to the Long Dock. These 3 performances are open to all including young children! They will take place in a loop and last until approximately 3:30pm. Bring your folding chair!

Parking Recommendations

Parking in Long Dock is limited. Walking, carpooling and the Free Beacon Loop Bus are encouraged. The Loop Bus drops you at the train station, and you can walk over to Long Dock. The best place to park is in the train station on the side closest to the Hudson River, where all spots are free on the weekends!

Remembering and Seeking :: The Retail Therapy Guide 9/10/2021

Tomorrow (Saturday) is 9/11, the culmination of September days leading up to this moment, mixed with first day of school excitement and raw emotions that come with that for parents, kids, educators and staff. Happy Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year that happened this week, and Happy Muḥarram, the Islamic New Year that happened in August. This year is the 20th Anniversary of 9/11, and circumstances are very different. Americans and the world watched the departure of American troops from Afghanistan, and have been learning about the varied emotions that is bringing to veterans and people who have been investing in Afghanistan to be part of building infrastructure and societal systems in Afghanistan. American women watching Afghan women protest the Taliban is opening a new chapter in this "war on terror." Does the war on terror include all skin colors, including those on January 6th at the U.S. Capitol? Seeking a perspective from other people this year might be something to consider when deeply reflecting on the loss that occurred that day. Consider reading this article on Deadline from the makers of "Ramy," a show on Hulu starring Ramy Youssef (winner of a Golden Globe and Peabody Award) and producer Maytha Albassen: "‘Ramy’ Star & Producer On 9/11 Aftermath, Arab American Muslims & A Real Bite Into “Strawberries”" Local Beaconite author Olivia Abel has been working at Guidposts, and just published a story on the Fireboat McKean that saved hundreds of people that day, has the strangest history of always being in the right place at the right time, despite being decommissioned. The fireboat is being turned into a floating museum. Maybe we'll see it up here in Beacon? Olivia starts the article out with: "I heard lots of stories on 9/11. I was a reporter at People magazine in New York City then; that day we scrapped the weekly issue that was slated to close that night and put out a special commemorative 9/11 issue instead. I reported on the phone, hearing harrowing tales of regular people on hijacked planes calling to say goodbye to their loved ones. I reported from the streets in midtown Manhattan, where dazed New Yorkers milled about telling me about narrow escapes, missing loved ones and amazing stories of strangers taking people into their cars and their homes. By the time I left the office at 5:30 a.m. the following day, the sun was dawning on a city—and a world—that would never be the same. My mind was full of incredible stories of unimaginable tragedy, as well as unimaginable heroics. "But until recently, I had never heard a story about an amazing boat that rescued hundreds of people on that fateful day." The firefighters on boat rescued people in the darkness of the fallen towers, and was able to pump water from the Hudson River when water main pipes had broken. It could pump the equivalent of 18-20 fire engine trucks. The festival culminates in an afternoon of hayrides and an outdoor concert featuring a local jazz orchestra, Big Band Sound.
