The green bus of Common Greens’ Mobile Farmers Market has been seen powering up and down Beacon’s streets, making its way to its two parking lot destinations every Wednesday from July to September! The program’s mission is to reach low-income families in the City of Beacon with farm-fresh produce directly from Common Ground’s farm located on Route 9D.

The two locations are Beacon’s Community Health Center parking lot on Henry Street (Wednesdays, 11 am to 12:30 pm), and Forrestal Heights, in Parking Lot #2, next to the Senior Friendship Center (Wednesdays, 1 to 2 pm). The Common Greens Mobile Farmers Market accepts WIC, FMNP, EBT/SNAP, and Greens 4 Greens. The currency known as Greens 4 Greens is also accepted at the Beacon Farmers Market on Sundays from 10 am to 3 pm at Veterans Place.

According to Common Ground’s website, their produce is reaching the low-income families it is targeting: “In 2017, a combined total of over 2,000 pounds of produce from Common Ground and the Green Teen gardens was sold at the Common Greens market, and 61% of mobile market sales were made using some form of food benefit, which is an indication that the market is reaching our target population.”

Common Greens Mobile Farmers Market was created in partnership with Green Teen Community Gardening Program of Cornell Cooperative Extension Dutchess County. The County of Dutchess partially funds Cooperative Extension in Dutchess County.

On The Nightstands…

In that same spirit, this edition of What Are We Reading is keeping it real and not worried about intellectual heft. Our fearless leader Katie confesses that she went to Rite Aid and bought all of the rag magazines and a Clive Cussler book for summer reading. She is on a quest to save the magazines. Right now, you’ll find all of them at big box stores. So, people need to buy them. You can pick up your favorites at Rite Aid too. And Vogel Pharmacy, if you’re out near Leo’s.

Managing Editor Marilyn Perez is reading “Mindful Yoga, Mindful Life” by Charlotte Bell for the third time! She comes back to it every couple years, and I can only assume it helps to inform her excellent yoga teaching at Firefly Yoga in Fishkill.  

As for me, I’m staying informed about local events and maintaining a very low overhead by enjoying the Chronogram and Edible Hudson Valley (yay, Weed Issue!) and the award-winning Highlands Current.

Writerly Happenings Around Town

Split Rock Books has this pretty incredible offsite event with author Benjamin Dreyer, discussing his book at the Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival on Friday, July 12. I’ve heard a lot of great things about his book, “Dreyer’s English: An Utterly Correct Guide to Clarity and Style.” 

Saturday, July 20, competes for your heart and mine with an intergalactic event at BAU. Matt Clifton and Larry Sansone are organizing a reading alongside an exhibition of Sam Beste and Elizabeth Arnold’s artwork. The subject is space exploration (in tandem with the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission) and the fragility of life on earth.

Also that night, there’s another Spring Street Reading Series over at Atlas Studios in Newburgh. “Women and their Bonding,” from 7 to 8:30 pm, features writers Laura Brown and Idra Novey and is curated by Ruth Danon.

On Sunday, July 28, you could take a workshop with Donna Minkowitz, who will also be reading at Get Lit on Sunday, July 14, at Oak Vino. In the Beacon Summer Memoir Intensive, participants “write about our lives using the five senses, lyricism, emotion, critical thinking, and the art of storytelling." Then on Saturday, August 24, she is offering Writing From the Body at Wyld Womyn. This is a memoir workshop for all who identify as women, nonbinary or trans, and want to write about their “lives, sensations, pains, pleasures, and feelings of all kinds.”

Speaking of Get Lit, there’s a great interview with the righteous Ronnie Farley up on their website, and on Sunday, August 11, from 5 to 8 pm at Oak Vino they will feature poet Catherine Arra. Their lineup is looking very interesting for the fall, too.

And while we’re on the subject of of 50th anniversaries, on Tuesday, August 13, in conjunction with the 50th anniversary of Woodstock, you can head to the Howland Public Library in Beacon to hear local author Sharon Watts discuss her newest book, “By the Time I Got to Woodstock - An Illustrated Memoir of a Reluctant Hippie Chick,” which she both wrote and illustrated! 

Farther afield, there’s this fascinating series happening up in Hudson that I’m really intrigued by - The Home School Poetry Readings at Time and Space Limited - and they have a pretty stellar (interstellar?) lineup of writers. 

Also I saw a very pretty picture of some lucky writer working away at the Kingston Writer’s Studio and felt such envy! They are all booked up for members, but you can get a day pass and write all the things.

So then, if you Writerly Types can put down your magazine and climb out of the hammock, come join us. There will be air conditioning and no judgment about your summer trash-reading game. We’ll be tailgating out front with a popsicle.

"Perfectly Puzzled" Exhibition Of Work By Adult Artists In Anderson Center For Autism Expressive Outcomes Program

The Howland Public Library in Beacon is pleased to host Perfectly Puzzled, an exhibition of work created by adult artists in Anderson Center for Autism Expressive Outcomes program. Perfectly Puzzled will be on display at the Howland Public Library from Second Saturday, July 13, through Saturday, August 3. A Second Saturday artists’ reception will be held on July 13 from 5 to 7 pm. 

About Anderson Center for Autism Expressive Outcomes Program

In 2004, Anderson Center for Autism established Expressive Outcomes, a program to engage Anderson adult clients in the arts. The program provides adult artists with opportunities to experiment in visual, spoken, and performing arts. Visual art exhibits take place throughout the year. At these exhibits, artists discuss their inspiration, techniques, and ideas surrounding their art. Artists are encouraged to explore new creative realms based on their interests and goals, and are assisted in displaying their work in community galleries and other venues.

About The Art Projects And Expressive Opportunities

Projects are expressive and playful in nature, demonstrating the artists’ enjoyment working in different media, textures, and with each other on collaborative projects. Over time, artists have developed more sophisticated pieces while continuing to collaborate. Distinct artists have emerged, independently creating unique artwork. Some of the artists have been motivated by their success to enter their works in outside exhibits.

Expressive Outcomes offers new opportunities for artists to express themselves and develop new skills, including music, movement, and theater. This program connects the artists with other artists, arts organizations, and the broader community, widening our individuals’ network and bringing new opportunities to our adults. The 16th Annual Great Newburgh to Beacon Hudson River Swim - Registration Closes Friday, July 19!

The River Pool at Beacon is hosting the 16th annual Great Newburgh to Beacon Hudson River Swim on Saturday, July 20, 2019 (rain date is Sunday, July 21). All swimmers must pre-register to swim by Friday, July 19, 2019. Registration on race day will not be allowed.

The race is a wonderful opportunity for experienced swimmers to swim about one mile (72 lengths of a standard 25-yard pool) across the Hudson River and raise funds to benefit the nonprofit volunteer organization River Pool at Beacon (a 501c3 tax-exempt organization). You can also learn more about the River Pool from this article we published about their 2018 opening.

Swimmers will check in on the Newburgh side of the river at Water Street, between 3rd St. and 4th St. (UNICO Park Plaza) between 8:30 and 10:15 am. Swimmers must be at least 10 years old, but swimmers ages 10-17 need certification of ability signed by a coach or athletic director.

Family and friends are encouraged to drop off swimmers in Newburgh, watch them start the race, then drive across the bridge to Beacon to greet them as they come out of the water. There will be light snacks, food, and beverages available for purchase on the Beacon riverfront.

Kayak Escorts Wanted

In addition to swimmers, they are also looking for kayak escorts for the race to ensure the safety and well-being of all swimmers, as well as keeping them on-course. There are no registration fees to be a kayak escort.

Is Beacon Open On The Fourth Of July? Here's A Short List

Holidays are tricky for shops and restaurants. On a holiday, most people who have salaried jobs have the day off - or a paid holiday - and take to traveling. To places like Beacon! But people who work usually part-time jobs for small businesses also want the holiday off. So it can be hard to find employees to work on the day. And if you’re the business owner like me, there isn’t such thing as a paid holiday. We just work all the time, LOL.

A reader wrote into A Little Beacon Blog today to ask about whether stores and restaurants would be open. Sometimes holiday weekends - especially Monday holidays - can be very busy in Beacon. Remember Presidents’ Day weekend a few years ago?

Meanwhile, the business owners in Beacon were asking themselves the same thing in a Facebook group. We caught a few answers, and then social media went dark as Facebook and Instagram decided to break for today and not work. Thank goodness for blogs and newsletters (ahem)!

We are awaiting confirmation on Darryl’s Clothing Boutique. They are usually open on Thursdays, but we aren’t sure either with the holiday!

The movie theater will be open, if you need to cool off.

[UPDATED 7/4/2019] Also open will be Beacon Pantry, Trax, Mountain Tops, Bank Square Coffee, Blackbird Attic, Utensil, and most likely several others! Have fun out there, and please no U-turns in the middle of the street!

The public Beacon Pool is open! Anyone can go. Day passes are $5, $3 for kids. Season passes are still available to buy. You can bring your own food, but you must eat it outside of the fence. This is to help prevent bees from gathering inside the pool area.

The Declaration of Independence is being read down at City Hall. This is the big municipal building at the entrance of Main Street and Wolcott. If you’re walking up from the train, you’ll walk right by it. The reading starts at 11 am. Find details in A Little Beacon Blog’s Event Guide.

Dear Everyone: Please Stop Doing U-Turns On Main Street!

OMG y’all - people of Beacon and those visiting Beacon - this Monday you are up on your U-turns on Brett Street on Main Street (right by Key Food)! It’s not a good idea!

More U-turns happen at Cliff Street and Main Street, and I’m sure in more areas of town that others have seen.

Seriously - just figure out another way to turn around. Go around a block, maybe.

Oh, and passing a car who is parallel-parking is not legal if you’d have to cross a double-yellow or single-yellow line to pass. We checked with the Beacon police, and if you pass on a solid yellow line on your side, that will get you a ticket. The reason I know this is because I was jay-walking (also wrong, eeks, I know), and a car wasn’t expecting a pedestrian there while they were peeling around the parking car, so they almost flattened me.

So be careful, and patient. Let’s all do better.

Stony Kill Foundation's Annual Butterfly Festival

The fun and family-friendly annual Butterfly Festival at Stony Kill Farm is happening this year on Saturday, July 27, from 11 am to 3 pm. Master gardeners are in attendance to educate and answer questions about Stony Kill Foundation's Verplanck Memorial Garden.

What To Expect - Butterflies, Of Course

The festival will feature local vendors, a plant sale, a monarch butterfly expert and education table, storytelling, music, food, crafts, face painters, a henna artist, hula hoop demonstrations, and of course - the butterfly tents that the festival is known for!

And Horses

This year there will also be a horse show for the first time. There will be many types of activities and opportunities for the family to experience.

Tickets and VIP Perks

This event, which regularly draws over 2,000 people, is always a big hit every year. VIP fast-passes are available - they include a ride on the Butterfly Mobile, an event T-shirt, and a ticket to the “Fast Pass” Butterfly tent so that you’ll be able to avoid the regular long lines to get in and see the butterflies. It’s like the Fast Pass at Disney, but better because you’re at Stony Kill Farm in the fresh air!

You’ll get all of this for a suggested donation of $17 ($65 for a family of four, and kids under 5 are free!).

Looking for a sweet? The Crafty Hammer’s Grand Opening and Ribbon 🎀 Cutting with Beacon’s Chamber of Commerce is this Saturday, June 29, 2019, and there will be power-drill shaped cookies!! Those will make great fuel for the two days of DIY woodworking workshops for you to enjoy.

Look for blocks of wood you can stencil and paint, as well as other crafty hammer challenges. The Crafty Hammer is located at 4 South Chestnut Street, across from Rite Aid, in the former purple yoga studio spot. What was once purple is now brown - for wood!
