The Retail Therapy Guide - 6/12/2020

In addition to our event and retail information for you, we have been working on a police news newsletter that brings you up to speed on the developments that happened in anti-racism and police brutality in Beacon this week. That will get delivered tomorrow.

This weekend is the Phase 2 Reopening weekend. Which is on the one hand exciting (yay, stay in business! yay, see your friends!) is also one that comes with caution because the virus is still getting people sick. Even at A Little Beacon Blog, we each feel varying degrees of caution and develop our own safety plans of what feels safe or responsible to us. As you are too.

Even though we want to jump up and down for joy, we're taking the road of: "Just be careful." Businesses are starting to let customers in their doors - with new safety measures of course and limited capacity. Restaurants are getting creative with their outdoor dining options, barbershops and salons are booking appointments, and places of worship can re-open at 25% capacity

Whether you're dining out, shopping, or protesting - social distancing is still recommended as we are still in the middle of a pandemic. Don't leave home this weekend without your masks or face coverings! Businesses have the right to not allow you inside without them - just think of it like "No Shirt, No Shoes, No Service" only add masks to that too. Don't like your face mask? No problem! Start your collection by checking out our list of where you can buy masks from mask makers in Beacon and around the area.

PS: Oregon just paused their Reopening because their number of daily new infections got too high, and those Californians just really don't care that their numbers keep climbing! Stay safe, and keep the curve flat so that we can continue to make this Reopening happen and stay open :)

PTACEK HOME

Sad news from PTACEK Home: "After much deliberation, we have decided to close our Beacon location of Ptacek Home. We have loved being a part of the Beacon community, but sadly, we will be leaving as of June 15th. We will continue to sell our furniture line as well as custom furniture as we have in the past - but will have to do so without a storefront for now. For now, we will be focusing our time on our custom home building company:
Thomas Jerome Inc. www.thomasjeromeinc.com."
Beaconites: now is the time to visit their little shop down the winding path down by Mountain Tops. Clean them out of furniture inventory, and make their move-out easier.

For the brief moment that LLTO was with us on Main Street, as they were partners in the little shop with PTACEK Home, they too are moving out - but moving on! Online that is. Alas, you can always find LLTO online, and they are having a 15% off sale IRL (In Real Life). You can go into the store! Friday, Saturday & Sunday 11am-6pm. Says Tamara: "We are proud to be a Hudson Valley business and will still make local deliveries available for our Beacon, Cold Spring & Garrison Family!"

Please DM us recommendations and products you love."

A Protest, Happening This Weekend, And The Retail Therapy Guide - 6/5/2020

That's right folks...An old phrase has been added to our subject line: "Happening" Because things are Happening! This week was a big week. And it's not over yet.

Last Saturday: A gentle protest was held in Beacon by Southern Dutchess Resist.
Details >

Monday: A large peaceful protest was organized by these young people: Xavier Mayo, Ciarda Hall, and Stefon Seward was held in Beacon. Police provided an escort by way of moving street closure for protection, and two of Beacon's highest ranking police officers were granted permission to join. A Little Beacon Blog was there and covered it. See this article to get a feel for the experience, watch 2 videos of chanting in the beginning, and 1 video of the entire march, from inside the march. This article includes responses from the Chief of Police Kevin Junjulas and Mayor Kyriacou to A Little Beacon Blog's questions.
Get The Story >

Tuesday: Tuesday turned into Blackout Tuesday. With many white people learning and unlearning themselves, and black people asking white people to speak, there was a lot of words and social media flying around. This became a day of silence and reflection. A Little Beacon Blog was honored to get a call by Terry Nelson, Beacon's City Councilmember for Ward 1. He was at the march, and we reached out to fact check his daughter's name for an article. We came away with an incredible interview with Terry's experience when a member of the NYPD  putting a gun to his face when he was 17, and how he lives as a black man in America today.
Details >

Wednesday: Wednesday turned into a day of heaviness. When the reflection started, and vital sharing continued, many black and brown friends released their personal experiences of growing up black in America, and they were very sad and tired. Tired because they have been living with this for all of their years as a normal part of their lives, and now, some white people, were finally beginning to hear and see it. You may have received business emails from black owned businesses who don't normally talk about race in their marketing material, but on this day, they did.
Also on this day, Beacon's Patrolmans Benevolent Association issued a letter in response to George Floyd's killing. Signed by Officer Michael Confield, they referred to the death as an "unconscionable death."

Thursday: By now, peaceful protests had happened in Newburgh and Poughkeepsie, where both police chiefs (Newburgh's has an Officer In Charge as they are in transition after their chief resigned last month after a riot was sparked after an armed black man was fatally shot by police) kneeled with protestors.

Friday: That's today! See below for what's in store...
PS: Yes, we have started a comprehensive list of black owned businesses in the Hudson Valley and we wanted to release it to you today, but it's still being formatted and linked up.

The Retail Therapy Guide - 5/29/2020

Today is Friday. At the time of this writing (9am) a black reporter and the production crew filming him has been arrested by 6am, and later released (CNN's Omar Jimenez). The president has been neutered on Twitter for glorifying violence with a "looting and shooting" part of the tweet that was hidden. Debates on censorship and safety for humans between person to person contact as fueled by race and racism are happening all at once and very quickly (to see how we really feel about censorship of privately held social media companies, visit ALBB's sister company, Tin Shingle).

Safety is also being debated about (sad that the word "also" just slipped into there) about protecting one's self from a virus that you can't see. Writing about these different concepts happening at the same time is extremely difficult.

As it is to live it - on a sunny day on the weekend - as we slide into the first weekend of the Phase 1 opening, where we are jubilant with hope of doing old "normal" things like seeing each other easily out on Main Street glimmers into our minds.

Stay safe out there, as we learn the new normal as it gets developed.

The Retail Therapy Guide - 5/15/2020

It's Reopening Day today in New York State! That brings mixed feelings for different people, but we know this: you need a face covering when you venture out to that gardening center, golf course (already has been open, sans bathrooms or food), or drive-in movie theater.

And you need more than one face covering. A Little Beacon Blog has started our list of local recommendations - who is sewing and making local. See our Face Mask Gift Guide here.

If you are making and selling dynamite masks, we want to know about it. Please contact us with details on how to purchase. We know that there is an army of Makers who have been strictly making for the front lines. Now that the public is mandated to wear them when 6' social distancing is not possible, we want to help people feel proud and confident in their mask fashion.

PS: See how Beacon's floral shops, who need to remain closed because they are Retail, are still getting flowers to you.

If you've been following us on Instagram (@alittlebeacon), we've been sharing messages from readers who have contributed through our Readers Support page

FUNDRAISERS - HELP IN THE TIME OF THE PANDEMIC
At the request of one of our new reader supporters, A Little Beacon Blog complied an easy list of fundraisers to contribute to whenever you want to. Some of these are date driven. Those will be posted to the top of the list. This is a live guide, so refresh the page, and give when you can!

MEET THE ARF ALL STARS

Now more than ever ARF Beacon need your support and have launched for #givingtuesday Meet The ARF All Stars!  Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, they are not able to maintain operations as normal.  The main source of funds for ARF come through fundraising events & food/supply drives which have all been postponed indefinitely.
They have many animals that have been here a long time that may never be adopted through no fault of their own, "but we love them all," says ARF.  Your donation for one will help continue to provide the care needed for that pet and all of the ARF dogs and cats until they find their forever homes or no longer need ARF. But some pets come back, like Max, who came to ARF as a 3-month pup when a high-kill shelter wanted to put him and his siblings to sleep. He's back after his adopter needed to move and surrendered him. You can select the pet you want to donate to, as well as other animals in ARF's care, as needed. To see the individual animals you can donate to, click here.
The shelter will be closed to the public until further notice. This campaign is only a week long, and there are only 6 days left! Please contact ARF at www.arfbeacon.org if you are considering adoption.

FIREFLY YOGA FUNDRAISER
Yoga is a passion for our Managing Editor, Marilyn Perez. She practices yoga, completed her teacher training, and currently teaches at Firefly Yoga in Fishkill.  They just set up a GoFundMe page in order to help with rent and utilities, continue to provide free morning meditations, free classes on Wednesdays, as well as a full digital class schedule. Check out Firefly Yoga GoFundMe Page to learn more about this community and to donate.

BEACON HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS
The Governor announced today that both grade schools and colleges were officially closed for the remainder of the school year. In his message to the community sent via robo-call, Beacon's Superintendent Matthew Landahl gave a moment of consideration for the Senior class. A fundraiser has been started for them, by way of yard signs. Buy a sign for $20 and show your support in your yard.

THE CRAFTY HAMMER

One of the first things The Crafty Hammer did upon moving to Beacon was to advertise with A Little Beacon Blog. We will never forget their support and generosity, and are doubly sad to report that they are pulling up the pins and leaving Beacon. The husband and wife team both have lung diseases that make dealing with the virus too risky. Everything in the shop is for sale (most everything). Find pieces of decor, shelving, bins, and more. See their Facebook page for pictures, and contact Joely Polokoff joely@thecraftyhammer.com with questions and interest.

Made by PTACEK Home, who has a store right here in Beacon. They can provide the look that will change your space.

Pick one thing and move forward with it, and quiet those other requests that threaten to distract you.

The Retail Therapy Guide, 4/3/2020

weekend-retail-therapy-guide-MAIN.png
Hello and Happy Friday.

It's a busy Friday. It's a Friday where some banks opened to take applications from businesses applying for the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP), but there's a flood of applications and some banks are delaying in order to prevent fraud. The new owners of Homespun Foods have been on it like bonnets from the beginning, trying to save their restaurant, and applied today, and have a hopeful response. We'll send you their story soon.

In the Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) department, masks are being talked about in a big way for a variety of reasons. There's the shortage of hospital-grade ones. Beacon Makers, organized by the Mutual Aid Beacon and Beacon Moms Group (and possibly others) have also been on it like bonnets and have been making CDC-approved emergency masks for weeks to try to help the front lines at the hyperlocal level in Beacon and beyond. The making continues, as a lot more masks and gowns are needed.

And then there is my mom, who live-texts me the daily briefings from Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine, and sends me the latest in cybersecurity alerts, like this one from the FBI regarding defending against VTC Hijacking and Zoom-bombing. Great. Well, now you know how to tell your boss to have shorter meetings!

All of these articles are going to come to you, but after our regularly scheduled Retail Therapy Guide. Get this guide, know how to get your wine delivered, treat yourself to a new shirt or pair of glasses, and then continue on with the harder stuff.

BUT FIRST, A THANKS TO OUR ADVERTISERS
As best we can, people are trying to pay in place - keep the system moving as if money is still flowing. A Little Beacon Blog has some advertisers who have stayed on, and we appreciate them so much. Their support helps us report on the virus, and business developments in town. To those businesses who needed to pull out, we get it! And we support you too, and know that we are cheering for you to make it to the other side of the apex.

Advertisers trying to continue to support us (give them extra love!):

Antalek & Moore Insurance Agents.
As you juggle which bills to pay, pay your insurance bill if it's through an agent. If people skip their insurance premiums, the good people at Antalek & Moore don't get their commissions. Antalek & Moore employs several people, and they work hard doing homework to make your home and business insurance life easier. If you aren't in their good hands yet, call them today to transfer your insurance to them. Honestly. They do the work for you. They find the right fit with an insurance carrier, and they do the rest. Need a new Workers Comp policy? They are on it. Change of address? Done.

Binnacle Books.
Huge supporters of many movements. Order your books through their easy web page. The fact that an independent bookstore even opened in the past few years is amazing, and now they're riding out a pandemic.

Eat Church.
Bless them. Their food truck is powered down for now and they are still supporting ALBB. They are also involved with Animal Rescue Foundation (ARF), so any extra love we can throw ARF's way to encourage you to donate to help the dogs and cats, we will. Donate here. Or adopt!

Luxe Optique.
Another huge supporter of local, and thinking outside the box to make things work, and make you happy with your vision and your style. We miss their faces and energy so much!

PTACEK Home.
Newbies to Beacon from Garrison, and they dove right in months before the pandemic shut them down. They have the custom-made furniture shop off the beaten path, but really they make homes and custom-designed furniture. See below for ideas.

LLTO (Live Light Travel Often).
Partners with PTACEK Home in the shop only, Tamara Reynolds is the founder of LLTO and its curated stock of beautiful products from her travels to Japan and knowledge of artisan-made goods.

The Retail Therapy Guide This Week - 3/27/2020

Happy Saturday!

Apologies on the late send... My (Katie) son's eighth birthday was yesterday (Friday), and we had an early evening drive-in birthday sing for him. Hope that was OK! Most were in their cars or across the street in their own Sphere Locks (that's what I call household social distancing).

Internally, Marilyn and myself wondered what would become of the event-based weekend newsletter? We decided to dedicate the Friday newsletter to "Retail Therapy," because gosh darnit, the beat still goes on! We still need good books, new shirts, new shoes, new bikes, and delivery.

ALL RESTAURANT + SHOP COVID-19 STATUS ALERTS REGULARLY UPDATED
Marilyn, who is A Little Beacon Blog's Managing Editor, scours the socials to find out which restaurants are still doing carry-out, curbside delivery, etc. She updates the Restaurant and Shopping Guides for every single storefront on Main Street, East Main, and West Main. If your storefront is not in these guides and your business has a storefront here, let us know. If you see a "@inkcoffeeyoga NL" in the comments of your business's social media account, it means we've been by and are going to update a Guide or feature something here in the newsletter!

NEW: Also for Main Street businesses, we have added Fitness businesses into the Business Directory to include which Beacon fitness studios are doing things online. We are doing this basic listing for free. Any other type of business who wants inclusion and promotion in the Business Directory can learn about it here. We are doing this free of charge for storefronts, as a way to support our storefronts.

SUPPORT OPTION: If you do want to support ALBB, and want to include your scheduled class times and other fun details, as well as guarantee your upcoming online Zoom class schedules are included on ALBB's website and in this newsletter, you could start an advertising campaign. Starts at $100/month. Regardless, basic listings with links to the schedules are free at this time on the website.
Special note: Studios from Fishkill, Cold Spring, etc. are welcome and encouraged to be listed in the Business Directory, but we can only extend the free listing to Beacon businesses at this time. We are buried in our workload, but want to help!

BARB'S BUTCHERY (Closed For Now)
Barb's Butchery announced their temporary closure this week. The orders came in fast and furious. There were many tears in the Instagram. But businesses have to sift through a lot right now, figuring out financing and other everyday big hurdles that any business hits. We are all anticipating Barb's return so that we can fill our bellies once we all bounce back on the other side of the wave.

THE BEACON HOTEL & RESTAURANT
Also announced this week, the Beacon Hotel & Restaurant is also temporarily closing. From their Instagram: "Although this was a very hard call to make, we have made the decision that it is best to close our doors including take-out and delivery to protect the health of our employees and community. We appreciate every single one of you who has been here to support us during this hard time. We will all get through this, and look forward to having you as our guests when we re-open."

Other restaurants continue to be open.
Do check our Restaurant Guide and order takeout/delivery!

TIN SHINGLE
Every Wednesday at 1pm, Katie hosts a live webinar for small businesses. Usually it focuses on how to pitch your business to the media for publicity (still relevant... SO many articles are being produced right now!). It alternates between free and open to all, and private for members only. This week's was private, and included Hudson Valley EATS and Fluid Running (jogging in place in a pool... sells a flotation kit and an app with running routines). Both businesses are navigating how to get the word out. Fluid Running is experiencing healthy sales from states down south as people shift running routines and run in their pool. Fluid Running wants to get the word out in a sensitive way, being mindful of people who don't have pools.

Happening Today 3/20/2020 Edition - COVID-19 + Shopping + Restaurant Edition

Hi,

This week was a little rough. It was the first Learn From Home Week for parents, the Internet got glitchy, and last night, California did go on a "Don't Leave Your House This Evening" drill (they've already been living in a Stay At Home state). That was the first time most of us saw something like that happen. At least lately, LOL. The national media has woken up to coronavirus, possibly in part because their offices have been shut down for COVID-19 prevention, and their coverage has gone wild. It is helpful to have the information, but it's a lot all at once.

This morning while outside, a long siren sounded. ALBB has gotten questions about it in the past, but we never pursued it. So today, we pursued it. People walking around, who might normally be at work in New York City but are housebound now, might have been little spooked to hear that old-fashioned sound. Turns out, it's just a regular old fire announcement siren from across the river that traveled here especially loudly because of the humid, foggy day, according to Beacon's fire chief. The sirens are used to alert volunteer firefighters to the call of duty. Beacon does not have sirens, says the chief, because the fire department uses other technology to mobilize their force. Awesome to know this bit of Beacon trivia.

Beacon businesses have been preparing for a 100% closure of non-essential businesses all week. In one week, we saw statewide mandates for bars to close, movie theaters, gyms, casinos, and others. The mandate to close barber shops and salons came next, and shortly after that, the 100% just-close-everything-that-is-non-essential.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo has been stressing the importance of regional cooperation, so that states next to us don't get flooded with people seeking what they need. Therefore, Connecticut and New Jersey are working together to make the same policies as New York. Ohio is also a few days ahead of us in policies that New York eventually makes. So policies are spreading and catching on. Just like Social Distancing.

Gov. Cuomo has been reassuring to listen to during this crisis, mind-bending as it is. But we need a leader. A general. As he describes it, we are in a war fighting this pandemic. In one week, we are at war mentality. One of the best things he has done is providing context to his announcements. He leads us down the path of what he needs (ventilators, ICU beds, buildings to put those beds in, etc.), and then delivers a dramatic mandate to help slow the spread in order to give him time to get this preparation work done.

A Little Beacon Blog is going to take that cause-based approach in our article production as we cover coronavirus. Headlines alone can be shocking. We need to know the why behind the headline, and why now. We are going to do our best to deliver to you timely information. But we are only publishing articles after we listen to a press conference, grab a significant amount of quotes, and present what just happened.

HOW A LITTLE BEACON BLOG IS DOING
Good. Katie will always tell you "good," but ALBB will provide preparation-type articles that may sometimes be uncomfortable to face.

TEAM: A Little Beacon Blog is paying our people in place. That is a little wobbly, because our business is based on advertisers, many of whose businesses have just been cut. In this time, Team ALBB has never been more at-the-ready to jump in and make something happen. Team ALBB will get paid as long as we can hold out! One of our revenue streams is website production, and we did have a client pull out from the VC medical device world, but we are getting requests for other projects, so we shall see.

We are stretching everything we can to bring on more writers to bring you developments in a more timely fashion. You may hear something on national news, but it can be a lot to take in at once. We are going to cover it with an angle on how it impacts Beaconites.

Katie's spouse works in the film industry, and they are completely shut down for at least two months, but are not going down without a fight. As you may have seen, Savannah Guthrie of the TODAY Show has COVID-19 symptoms, and filmed from her home basement, and Conan O'Brien announced he will record his show on his iPhone while his crew works from home. Love this resilience.

ADVERTISERS & SPONSORS: As we are seeing, businesses are responding in new ways to still get their product to their clients and customers. Business people are some of the most resilient and creative people we've met. A Little Beacon Blog is super-focused on their needs, and will help promote whatever they are doing when they need it. If now is the time you want to get a permanent spot in our promotion, do it. We're ecstatic to have you, and to get your message to the people eager to help you and buy from you.
HELPING BEACON BUSINESSES
A Little Beacon Blog has further enhanced our Restaurant and Shopping Guides. Both Guides rank No. 1 in Google when people search for where to shop or eat in Beacon, so repurposing these into a Coronavirus Cheat Sheet is the most efficient way we can show people how to reach our Main Street businesses right now.

This includes updates for ALL of the Restaurants and Shops on Main Street. We look through their social media, and take insider tips as well. The basic update is done at no cost to the business. The support from our current advertisers of A Little Beacon Blog (see below) are how we make this happen, and we are able to show you more of what our sponsors are doing through their regular placements. If you would like to show more of what you offer, you can look into that here for Restaurants, and here for Shopping. Other types of businesses (fitness, beauty, etc) can look into our Business Directory.

The (Not) Happening This Weekend Guide - 3/13/2020

Published Date: Friday, March 13, 2020

Hiya...
Whatcha doin'?
Yesterday (Thursday) was a big day. The past couple weeks have actually been big weeks in terms of coronavirus takeover, as industry standard across the United States has become the cancellation of trade shows (Architectural Digest's AD Show), medical device companies swamped in backorders and canceling trade shows until October, movie companies halting international premieres until Christmas, talent agencies (such as CAA) mandating that their client meetings happen remotely.

So when a reader wrote in on Wednesday to ask to ask if Beacon's St. Patrick's Day Parade was going to be canceled, we pursued the question but didn't believe that it would actually happen. The answer was that the City of Beacon and the Parade Committee had been meeting about it, and would announce on Thursday morning. This is when our brain broke. What does that mean for businesses? If gathering in a large group outside is being avoided, what does that mean for art gallery openings? This is Second Saturday! Fortunately, it is also Summer Camp Planning Season, so Wednesday night distracted us back to normal as we dove into organizational upgrades to that guide, so that parents would have an easy time searching camp options by week and age range.

Thursday happened. By now A Little Beacon Blog was ready. ALBB published that the parade was canceled. Managing Editor Marilyn Perez began fielding the cancellation emails for other events. Second Saturday Guide Editor Catherine Sweet began thinking about how to address the semi-self-quarantine vibe that was taking over Beacon and the Hudson Valley. Governor Cuomo gave a press conference and recommended (OK, mandated) that gatherings of 500 and more were banned in all of New York State, and gatherings of less than 500 could happen, but the venue's legal capacity of the room should be reduced by 50 percent in the name of reducing density to stop the spread of the virus, in the name of not overloading hospitals. Dutchess County held a press conference, and State Senator Sue Serino then issued an email suggesting that groups limit themselves to 20 people.

One reader response was: "That's family dinner." Right. That's probably the point. The virus is so contagious, and we have seen with others, like with the New Rochelle family, that carriers can be asymptomatic. So, if you feel fine, and go out because you aren't sniffling or sneezing, you still might pass it to someone, and that someone might have a minor lung issue, or a weak heart. And those people are the most at risk. Care for serious patients exists in the hospitals, but not if there are a lot of cases at once.

We have the Second Saturday Guide for you below. We have a few coronavirus articles for you as well. How you balance your social life is up to you - because seeing others is important. Laughing, dancing, supporting businesses who are open - all of these things are very important. Fortunately, we are in a use-your-best-judgment zone at the moment (unlike Italy).

No. 3 Reading Room and PhotoBookWorks: Closed for now, until this passes.
Mother Gallery: March 21 Jenny Morgan opening canceled; gallery closed until further notice.

Special Note From Catherine Sweet,
Second Saturday Guide Editor:

Hey, Beaconites and any people thinking of visiting town for this month’s Second Saturday! We’re hearing about event postponements and gallery closures as they come in, and we’ll try to keep everything here updated. Please have patience with us, with gallery owners, and with one another if you’re out and about - we’re all just trying to do our best.

In light of Gov. Cuomo’s statements on limiting public contact, and Dutchess County’s strong recommendations to avoid gatherings of more than 20 people (post from county legislator Nick Page on Facebook), there’s a good chance that many more Second Saturday activities will be postponed and canceled. But the art will still be there when we’re on the other side of this virus. If you do decide to go out, please be conscientious about your habits and consider the people around you. If a venue looks like it’s more than half-full, look through the window and scope it out for next time, then saunter on down to the next gallery. Remember, too, that historically, lots of art gets created when people are facing challenging conditions.

Might this be the last weekend we need mittens? Maybe! Which is perfect because this weekend is the Dutchess County St. Patrick's Parade in Wappingers Falls. (Admit it, you're going to miss cute winter accessories!)

There is a reason this year's daylong festival is such a big deal: Wappingers Falls has been recovering from its second major fire within a decade which happened last week. The multi-alarm fire ruined the homes of and displaced 32 (number had increased since previous reports) people and wiped out four businesses. This day will be especially important as a community comes together. There are at least two big raffles, a race, Irish coffee and hot toddies, and more fun. A Little Beacon Blog has the scoop here.
