Second Saturday! Beacon Gallery Openings for October 2018

Happy Second Saturday, October edition!

Happy Second Saturday, October edition!

Happy Second Saturday, folks! This mid-October weekend is jam-packed with gallery openings (and one closing 😥) as well as so many non-art events. The common theme? Community. Head out to the galleries. (Our Guide gives an overview of each exhibition or screening we track down.) Talk with your neighbors, visitors, or the artists. Buy their work if you're in a position to - get a jump on holiday gifting, maybe? Then head out again on Sunday, with the Car Show on Main Street and the Pumpkin Festival at Pete and Toshi Seeger Riverfront Park. Get the artsy-tartsy scoop here in our Art Gallery Guide, and read about all of the amazing non-artsy things in our Event Guide.

Some familiar Beacon faces highlight this #2Sat. At Scenic Hudson's River Center (the big red barn at Long Dock Park), Eleni Smolen of TheoGanz Studio has curated a selection of works by Hiro Ichikawa, a Hudson Valley painter, printmaker, and nature lover who passed away early last year.

At No. 3 Reading Room and Photo Book Works, revisit Melissa McGill's starry Bannerman Castle installation and read writer Sam Anderson's reflections, in Reverse Punctuation Constellations.

Matteawan Gallery will be closing after the current show, Eleanor White's Bittersweet, wraps up next weekend. (Read more here about Matteawan and what’s next.)

Brief descriptions in our Gallery Guide can't possibly do justice to all of the artists exhibiting around town, so you really should check them out yourself. If you're inclined, report back and let us know what you loved seeing. Comment here, on Facebook, on Instagram, or Twitter. We'd love to hear from you.

Rhinebeck Bank | Fall Home-Buying Tips
Pro tip from Rhinebeck Bank: Just as purchasing a home is an extensive process, selling one can be as well. Most sellers do not want to enter the holiday season with interruptions and the selling process on their mind. It is not uncommon for homeowners whose houses have not sold by the fall to wait until the following spring. With this being said, sellers are worn out and may be more willing to negotiate and expedite the closing and move-in process.

Writerly Happenings: New Literary Guide for Book Lovers & Writers

writerly_guide_new.png

Hey there, reading anything good these days?

If you want to know where to find your next book, and where to go to mix it up with other literary types, this new ALBB Guide to Writerly Happenings has you laced up. Every couple of weeks we’ll round up the best events happening in our growing local community of writers and readers and the people who love them.

Writerly Happenings in Cold Spring

Sunset Reading Series presents another stupendously located and top notch reading at The Chapel of Our Lady Restoration in Cold Spring on Sunday, October 7, at 4 pm when Sam Anderson, local author and New York Times Magazine Critic at Large, will read from his widely and wildly acclaimed book BOOM TOWN The Fantastical Saga of Oklahoma City, Its Chaotic Founding, Its Apocalyptic Weather, Its Purloined Basketball Team, and the Dream of Becoming a World-Class Metropolis.

This event is being co-hosted by Split Rock Books, who is also kicking off their inaugural book club event on Thursday, October 11, from 7 to 8 pm with If Beale Street Could Talk by James Baldwin. The film adaptation of this book, by Moonlight director Barry Jenkins, is due out in November. They are also having a storytime for kiddos with Bear and Wolf author Daniel Salmieri on Sunday, October 14 from 10:15 to 10:45 am.

Writing Groups In Beacon

If you are looking to join a writing group, on Monday, October 8, or Monday, October 15, you might check out Words & Womyn. This fresh weekly workshop from the Wyld Womyn, a new space on Main Street, is described as “a safe space that welcomes anyone female-identifying to sit and soak in the power of thought and prose.”

The night before, you could also get your book club on with Binnacle Books’ ongoing book discussion at Denning’s Point Distillery. On Wednesday, October 10 at 7 pm that group will be diving in to There There, by Tommy Orange.

Get Lit Beacon continues to work the room at Oak Vino in Beacon on the second Sunday of each month! Have a glass of wine and enjoy the salon there on October 14 at 5 pm. Katie from A Little Beacon Blog will be on hand to answer questions about local news media, as well as Brian PJ Cronin (Update: Danielle Trussoni, a memoirist and novelist, was slated to speak, but won’t join in this month). You can sign up to read for 5 minutes yourself. Get the lineup here.

Book Talks in Beacon

Later in the month, the Beacon Library is hosting a discussion of the much-acclaimed book Everything I Never Told You, by Celeste Ng, so start reading now if you want to get in on that on Tuesday, October 30, from 2 to 3 pm. The discussion will be led by Dr. James Cotter as part of the NEA Big Read program.

Open Mic Nights That Literary Types Might Like

For monthly open mic nights check out The Falcon Underground in Marlboro, the Wherehouse in Newburgh, The Howland Cultural Center in Beacon and Fiesta Friday in Poughkeepsie.

Farther afield, but well worth the drive, are two favorite bookstores that host loads of writerly happenings: Golden Notebook in Woodstock, and Rough Draft Bar & Books in Kingston.

We’ll see you back here in a couple weeks with more upcoming events. Tell us where to go and what to read in the meantime, if you like - email phoebe@alittlebeaconblog.com.

The ReAttached Team at Hanson Real Estate Partners Showcases the Creative Opportunities in Newburgh

Many thanks to ReAttached Team at Hanson Real Estate Partners, who have joined A Little Beacon Blog's Real Estate Guide as sponsors to show you a selection of their retail and commercial properties in Newburgh. If you were at Newburgh OPEN Studios this month, you may have experienced the buzzing energy over there - and gotten a creative itch to dig in. There's even a home for sale - a "TLC Heartthrob" on Beacon Street - in Newburgh! Check them out!

The ReAttached Team at Hanson Real Estate Partners invests in America’s livable urban spaces. They help creative and motivated individuals define their ideal lifestyle, and understand how owning or leasing real estate in Newburgh, New York, can accelerate people’s personal, professional and financial growth. See all of the ReAttached listings and call them for tours!

Sarah Beckham Hooff founded the ReAttached Team at Hanson Real Estate Partners after living abroad for 10-plus years, working as an environmental scientist, grant writer, social activist and performer. Three weeks after she discovered Newburgh, NY, she packed up and relocated. Shortly after landing, she founded a performance and recording studio in what was then an abandoned hair salon.

Inspired by other creatives’ interest in rediscovering and reinventing “downtown" American living, she founded a trilingual (Spanish, Russian, English) real estate sales team to support creative investors who think like homeowners, and motivated homeowners who think like investors. In 2018, Laura Suárez joined the Team as a licensed real estate agent, to facilitate transactions with Spanish-speaking clients.

Lights! Camera! Action! Locations Wanted for Filming in Dutchess County

film_dutchess.png

This just in from Dutchess Tourism!

Film production has been picking up in the Hudson Valley, with a new film production facility going up in Newburgh (as we discovered through this commercial/retail Real Estate listing, thanks to the tip from Sarah Beckham Hooff). CineHub in Beacon has been a great resource for filmmakers over the years. Residents of Beacon have already experienced film production. Now a wider range of businesses can get in on that call for “Action!” by serving as an amazing backdrop location to films and television shows filming in Dutchess County.

You and your business can get in on the fun and benefit from the filming boom that has hit the area. Dutchess Tourism provides film location assistance to location scouts and producers, and they are working to expand their database so they can respond more quickly to requests. The types of locations they seek span from homes and local businesses, to farms and warehouses.

You can be added to the recommendation list by filling out this film location form. Hosting a film or photo shoot can increase your exposure as well as provide some economic benefit. The Hudson Valley Film Commission has estimated that in 2017, the direct regional film spending was over $30 million.

You can learn more about the benefits of being a part of filming in New York State, such as earning tax credits, by clicking here.

Advice About Being A Location For A Film

Hey - it’s Katie from A Little Beacon Blog here, taking over this part of the article. While the fame and glory of having your home or business be in a film or television may be appealing, there are a few items you’ll want to be aware of as you negotiate your way through an experience. Disclaimer: My husband is a Location Manager, and I have worked as a Production Assistant on jobs, where I carried around a walkie-talkie and basically relayed messages and told people where the bathroom was. (The film production life wasn’t for me… the way-too-long hours were a deal-breaker.)

  • The filmed part that your house or business is in may end up on the cutting room floor. The film production may have spent a ton of money on it, but for whatever reason, it got cut out.

  • A “Union Production” can be a different ballgame than a production who doesn’t need to be union. This means that everyone in the film crew is in a union. It’s a “union job.” Members have to follow certain rules, and had to achieve certain milestones to get into that union. Pay scales may be different, and budgets may be different. To work with a job not in a union is fine, and may help a low-budget film production do some big things. It also helps people who aren’t in a union to get valuable experience.

  • Insurance: The film job should have it! Should something go wrong in your home or business, the production company may pay you directly to have it fixed, or their insurance company may pay. The job should have insurance in case this happens. Wishing for damage? Like, are you hoping for a new wall for your kitchen, and crossing your fingers that some piece of crew equipment would ding it pretty badly? Bad idea. You really don’t want to deal with the back and forth - it’s not worth it!

  • Check in with your neighbors. A film production gathering is a big deal. Sometimes they park on the street, sometimes they close a street. If it’s a night shot, there will be lights at night. You’ll want to talk to your neighbors to let them know if something will be going on.

  • Everything is negotiable. Usually in New York City, if someone’s apartment is getting filmed in, the owners of the apartment get paid, and the building itself gets paid. Not that a Producer or a Location Manager would like to pay everyone, but it’s good to know that for inconvenience, a price could maybe be negotiated for others.

  • Speaking of negotiation, read the contract. Know your contract well, and ask for things to be included in it that are important to you. Did they go past a filming date? Or an hourly end time? That should cost extra (them paying you). So, think of scenarios that might call for additional compensation, and ask questions.

  • You’ll be tight with Locations and the Art Departments. The Art Department will be the ones messing up your place, and cleaning it up again. They should return it to the state they found it in. Again, this should not be viewed as a free way to get a new paint job. The Locations Department will be with you from the beginning, and possibly after the Art Department has left. The Locations Department will be the ones giving you the check, delivering the contract, and working with the Art Department to make sure things are done right - as you want them.

Those Cinnamon Buns... That Crumb Cake...

IMAGE.JPG

The tiny counter at All You Knead Bakery is always filled with curious, good-smelling things that come fresh from the oven in the larger space in the back of the shop. This Sunday morning at 8:30am, fresh crumb cake sat warmly next to these gooey cinnamon buns. Not included in this picture were the salty pretzel bagels.

Tempting as this all was, I was on a mission for their chocolate croissant - which I found and devoured in four bites because it is so soft and generously filled with dark chocolate. I couldn’t leave without a blueberry scone, too, just in case anyone around me got hungry a few hours later after our Sunday errands. Turns out, I’m the lucky one who got hungry.

All You Knead Bakery is in the middle section of Main Street, just before Rite Aid and past Key Food if you’re walking from the train. It’s across the street a bit from the Howland Public Library. It’s located behind a simple wooden screen door. If you see their sidewalk sign out, you know they are open.

On Sundays they are also at the Beacon Farmers Market, just down Main Street. There, you’ll find a similar range of baked goods, but you may also find chicken pot pies, which I’m learning have quite a following. They also sell retail in stores like Adams Fairacre Farms, and you may find them in one of those Taste NY stores off the Taconic.

Mission next Sunday? Chicken pot pie.

JOB LISTING: Research Assistant for Media Resources at Tin Shingle (Part-Time)

tin-shingle-job-listing.png

This is a job alert for Tin Shingle, a national company that shares an office and a brain with A Little Beacon Blog. It would be really fun to find someone in Beacon for this job, even though it is a work-from-home-or-wherever job. There are a few requirements (like being a strong typer and someone who likes to do deep-dive research), so take a read and see if it’s a fit for you or someone you know!

ABOUT TIN SHINGLE

Tin Shingle is a training center and community for business owners, artists and makers who are promoting their brands. Tin Shingle puts the power of PR, social media, SEO, eNewsletter and design theory directly into the hands of creators, along with resources they can tap into any time. Crafted by business owners for business owners, Tin Shingle's programming trains people in how to get publicity, how to have sha-zam! social media streams, and how to master newsletter marketing. Tin Shingle offers a subscription membership where people can access different resources to improve their outreach. You can learn about that here.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The person who is the right fit for this assignment loves to dig online, research who‘s writing what in the media, and can’t help but get sparked with article ideas from the research. If you don’t know what an Editorial Calendar is, but you want to learn, that is great.

This Research Assistant position will be hunting and gathering for two of Tin Shingle’s resource databases, made available to our business and artist members who are pitching the media with article and story ideas:. The databases? Editorial Calendars and Media Contacts.

Editorial Calendars: These are PDFs put out by magazines that present what a magazine will be generally about for each issue. It’s a great way to know when a magazine will be doing their Back to School issue, or the big Gear Guide, or The Innovator Issue. The Research Assistant Googles and finds these PDFs online (usually found in Media Kits), or emails sales reps in the advertising department of a magazine to ask for the latest plans. Monthly themes are then typed up by the Research Assistant and imported into Tin Shingle’s database.

Media Contacts: Basic contact information for people who work in magazines, TV, podcasts, radio and blogs are available for Tin Shingle’s members to search through. We start our research in a bigger media database called Meltwater, and then whittle down that list by our own cross-checking research to make sure a person still works there, or works in a different capacity (maybe a top editor moved from a full-time position to a part-time contributing writer at a publication). Job assignments will be to take a deep dive into a media outlet (Vogue) or a subject (Spirituality) to gather or update fresh information.

Please Note: This is a not a free ride into Meltwater for a PR professional looking for contacts for their own clients. This is a research position that involves cross-checking and communication with Tin Shingle’s owner Katie to make sure we are updating people correctly. If you are a PR professional who really wants this gig, you can apply, but know that there are deliverables for each assignment and you won’t be pitching the media for this.

Skill Sets Needed for This Job:

  • Fast Typer: You will be copying and pasting a lot, and may be re-writing in order for Tin Shingle’s members to get a better read on a person or magazine theme.

  • Fluid In Social Media: While researching a media contact, you will know how to Google and search to verify where someone is working, and what they tend to write about.

  • Excel Nerd: Everything we do at Tin Shingle is in Excel. Information you find is typed into Excel spreadsheets, and uploaded into Tin Shingle’s database by you (don’t worry - we have step-by-step directions!). A guide to our systems, to keep track of when a media outlet was updated, is also in Excel in Google Drive so that we can stay coordinated and work together from the same document.

  • Communicator: You will be working directly with the owner of Tin Shingle, Katie, giving updates on what you are finding, and any questions or judgment calls you have along the way.

Location

This position is work-from-home (or wherever). You can live in Beacon or California or Colorado or Georgia. Tin Shingle does share an office with A Little Beacon Blog on Beacon’s Main Street, but our Open Hours are irregular. So it’s work-from-wherever to start.

TO APPLY:

Please send cover letter and résumé to katie@tinshingle.com addressed to Katie Hellmuth Martin. Email is best - no need to telephone in.

PAY RATE:

$20/hour, Part Time

Thank you!

Pumpkins and Corn Stalks for Home Decor at Sunny Gardens On 9D

Pumpkins at Sunny 😎 Gardens...always a festive sight on Route 9D on the way to or from Poughkeepsie or Wappingers Falls. The main goal for this visit is to pick up bales of hay for mulching before the winter, to hopefully slow weed growth come spring (it should technically be straw but we’re going the hay route). Two years ago I tried leaf mulch and that produced great soil, but resulted in stray leaves all over the snow.

Keep your eyes peeled for Sunny Gardens’ light-lined rows of Christmas Trees 🌲 in the winter!

Meet a Designer for Little Beacon Blog - Allie Bopp!

IMAGE.JPG

Meet Allie Bopp. She’s a graphic designer behind some of A Little Beacon Blog’s designs, and sometimes is Event Space Manager when our office in the Telephone Building is rented for a pop-up shop.

I first discovered Allie Bopp in a Beacon bus stop on Main Street. A new babysitter had canceled on me - a second time in a row! - and I was down in the dumps about it because I was supposed to teach a class for Tin Shingle and couldn’t make it. So my kids and I took a walk, and they had always wanted to sit in the bus stop just to sit. So we sat. Taped to the glass, behind my head, was a flyer with the cutest designs. It was black with rainbow fireworks or stars all over, advertising for a babysitter. I took the number and called. Was I crazy? Calling a random phone number from a bus stop? Turned out, it was Allie Bopp, from Wappingers (she’s a Beaconite now). You can see her work at her website, and she also does work for me at my design shop, Katie James, Inc.

Allie is amazing and in addition to staffing A Little Beacon Blog’s table while I marched in the Spirit of Beacon Day Parade with South Avenue Elementary, she rocked ALBB’s table by setting it up with our new totes (!!!) and meeting the wonderfully different people who wander up to the table to ask questions and sign up for the newsletter.

Pictured above is her boyfriend, posing as a signer-upper. (I’m told he really did sign up!) The best question we got of the day was: “Are you going to keep covering the storms?” When we did the story on the macrobursts, it made quite an impression on someone who really wanted more information on the local weather and its aftermath. That meant a lot! We are going to try. When there are big repercussions from big weather events, we do try to produce an article for it to help get information out.

During the research for that article, we became aware of some great sources for confirmations of weather events, so we’ll pursue those when something happens. Great sources found at the time included Hudson Valley Weather’s Facebook and Central Hudson’s Twitter. You can always email pictures of damage or something incredible to Editorial@alittlebeaconblog.com.

The mums at our table were from Key Food next door, purchased that morning for about $5 each! A passerby told us that we could plant them in the ground and they’d come back for years if we cut them back at the end of each fall. Will try!

Raffle: Chance For A Kid To Win A Ride To School On A Fire Truck

rombout-raffle-firetruck-MAIN.png

If you missed this event last year, you have another chance to enter your kid to win a ride in a fire truck! Each $5 ticket into Rombout’s Raffle helps raise money for the eighth-grade Washington DC trip. This raffle’s grand prize is a ride to school in a fire truck driven by the City of Beacon Fire Department and Slater Chemical Fire Company. Your child could be picked up at home - in a fire truck - and driven to school!

One kid from each of the four elementary schools in the Beacon City School District (South Avenue, Glenham, J. V. Forrestal and Sargent) will be selected as winners. Flyers went home in the little kids’ folders, so fill those out and send in money with your tickets - $5 per ticket or 3 tickets for $10! There is no limit to how many tickets you can buy.

If you want to buy several raffle tickets and need to print more raffle forms/tickets, you can print out the raffle form tickets here and keep sending them in, just in case riding to school in a fire truck sounds TOO COOL and you really want to increase your chances.

This is a highlight from A Little Beacon Blog’s School Opportunities Guide. There are more special events listed there, plus ways you can effortlessly donate to one of the schools in our district, through glass bottle collection, box tops, and other easy ways.

The Spirit in the Spirit of Beacon Day 2018 - Pictures from the Day of "Unity in Community"

spirit-of-beacon-day-2018-MAIN.png

Everyone has their first Spirit of Beacon Day experience. If you moved here recently and didn’t know about it before, you may have woken up on Sunday morning to a lot of excited commotion, with a frenzy of people setting up tables and coordinating with one another on Main Street.

The Spirit of Beacon Day is one of the biggest efforts put on by the people of Beacon to strengthen the community of Beacon. If you just moved here from another place that didn’t really have a strong sense of community, then this feeling might be new for you, and you will most likely love it. The spell of the community is part of what you felt when you visited Beacon for the first time, and fell so unexpectedly in love with it.

Pictures of the Spirit of Beacon Day are below. But first, a brief history for those who have newly moved here or are newly interested in Beacon -because I hear the FAQs, and “What is the Spirit of Beacon Day” is an FAQ I hear often!

What Is The Spirit of Beacon Day?

The Spirit of Beacon Day festivities started in Beacon in 1977 as a call to mend a broken relationship between the youth of Beacon, and the schools and surrounding community. Well documented by the Beacon Historical Society’s book titled "Celebrating Our Centennial," in the winter and early spring of 1977, "racial problems became severe" for several days and nights. City leaders decided to meet several times to discuss the issues that were causing unrest. Organizers included a representative from the FBI's Community Relations office, Dutchess County Youth Bureau, then-Mayor Robert Cahill, local legislators, City Council, local churches, and representatives from youth-focused organizations like Beacon City School District, the Howland Public Library, the Beacon Community Center, and others.

It was decided that there would be a Community Day aimed at bringing the people of the city together in order to "get to know one another better, learn what each other liked, [via] conversation, feelings, entertainment, education and food." And so the Spirit of Beacon Day was born. Here are some pictures from over the years.

2018 Marked a New Year for Spirit of Beacon Day

This is an event put on by the people, and not an official sponsored City of Beacon event. The organizers usually were behind the scenes, sought very little recognition, and for the most part, the majority of Beaconites didn’t know who they were. That is, until the longtime organizers decided to retire from the role in 2017 (don’t worry - they didn’t really retire).

This prompted a new group to say: “Wait! What? No! The Spirit must go on! We will help!” And so the Spirit of Beacon Day has continued, under new leadership, with the help of the former leaders. The Spirit of Beacon Day has a new website to help get the word out, new megaphones, and new T-shirts to help people know what’s going on during the day. This year, the motto on the T-shirts was: “Without Unity There Is No Community!”

Your Spirit of Beacon Day 2018 In Pictures

There are so many photographable moments. Here are a few we found or captured. As for the schools, the PTA/PTO/PTSO is usually behind the production of designing and building each school’s parade contribution. It’s a challenging job to come back to, just after summer break - to dive into a big float-making project! But they do it each year (I’ve been a part of it for the past two years with South Avenue).

South Avenue Elementary School

Representing the parade theme of “Celebrating Unity” by celebrating our differences and beauty in the the moments when we become one, together, despite our differences. The Hudson River flows in two opposite directions, yet is one river. The fish and other wildlife make up one ecosystem, just as we do in Beacon!

It’s rainbows and unicorns at Sargent Elementary! And they shared some behind-the-scenes photos of how those magical balloon arches got made.

Glenham Elementary

The kids of Glenham Elementary drew their pictures, cut out their handprints, and hung them together to symbolize togetherness rooted in the world.

Walking down Main Street after the parade, the street was alive with options. The Spirit of Beacon Day is the perfect opportunity to learn more about the various community organizations, so you and/or your kids can get involved.

Spirit Of Beacon Day 2018 Is Today! Pictures Are Rolling In

Main Street is aflutter with people setting up for Spirit of Beacon Day! The official theme of this year is “Celebrating Unity!” Official parade volunteers are wearing white shirts that celebrate unity and community.

Here are two South Avenue Elementary PTA moms, Ryan and Juliet (Juliet owns Beacon Pilates) picking up balloons 🎈 for the South Ave. marchers. The balloons are by the wonderful Junko at Flowers and Gifts, near All You Knead bakery (who is open and smells delicious!) . 🙌🙌

Disclaimer: I’m with them! I was part of this year’s float-making with the kids and parents. Look for so many other floats and presentations from other Beacon schools and local organizations.

J. V. Forrestal Elementary is having a water theme with little fishies - look for jellyfish or anything constructed with individual wagons. The kids got together on Family Fun Nights to unite in their creativity.

More pictures will be added here during the day, so keep checking back and refreshing this page!

Putting Up the Spooky Lights on Main Street

We’re setting up the spooky lights in the office ... After seeing orange, purple and pink Halloween 🎃 lights going up already on front porches of Beacon, we had to join in the spooky spirit!

Usually Home Depot has the glorious spread of Halloween yard decorations, but this year, Rite Aid in Beacon has enough choices on the shelves to do in a pinch. Brett’s Hardware, down on West Main, has the mums (flowers, not mummies!) and some other colored lights.

Happy Fall!
