Glenham Street Sign Serves As PSA: Prevent Freezing Pipes By Dripping Your Water

Beacon had a first run of the freezing weather over the holidays. The heating and plumbing trucks were out. Emergency wait lists were full. Beacon’s City Administrator Chris White advised people to prepare their homes for freezing temperatures during recent City Council meetings. Last year, he urged out of town residents who live or are vacationing long term to turn their heat on a little, as some homes experienced burst pipes when they got too cold. Which means water everywhere and damage.

Be mindful of the seasons and weather. Be proactive when it comes to freezing temperatures and making sure your heat is set at an appropriate temperature to avoid freezing pipes. Especially if you will be away from your home. Claims definitely go up during these times. Nothing worse than coming home to water damage caused by broken pipes.
— Susan Pagones, Antalek & Moore Insurance Agency

Today on K-104.7, Traffic Reporter Christina Lang told listeners about how pipes burst in her parents’ home and caused long term damage with mold growth. Local insurance agency Antalek and Moore is always thinking of you, and wrote this Winter prep checklist with advise. Antalek and Moore’s partner, Susan Pagones advises ALBB readers: “Be mindful of the seasons and weather. Be proactive when it comes to freezing temperatures and making sure your heat is set at an appropriate temperature to avoid freezing pipes. Especially if you will be away from your home. Claims definitely go up during these times. Nothing worse than coming home to water damage caused by broken pipes.”

A street sign in Glenhan serves as a reminder to you prepare your pipes to not freeze and explode during extreme cold temperatures. Here are the most basic and easy tips you can do to prevent your pipes from freezing and exploding water everywhere:

  • Water Dripping:
Drip your water in unused places, like the faucet outside with the snow.

  • Heat and Vacation:
Turn your heat on low when you’re out of town for more than a day.

Valentine's Day Essay: Gushing This Season

Back when I used to have kid/family-themed a column in a newspaper, I would emerge from the holiday months of November/December of not publishing anything (those are my Struggle Months) to bursting open in February for a Valentine’s Day themed column. I gave up the column, but why not publish it here at A Little Beacon Blog? You can print it out to make it “in print!” Otherwise, blog articles do exist forever (or as long as there is electricity and an Internet connection) in pixelated stardust.

This year, the kid-themed Valentine essay will be about tapping into Valentine’s feelings, why they might gush more times than others, and how to keep yourself mushy in order to feel the feelings. This, speaking as a person who does not normally feel the feelings.

PS: For the one reader who loves my grammar (and I say that dripping, overflowing with sarcasm), they will love this meandering-style essay. Buckle up! This one is an emotional roller-coaster.

Finding The Valentine

The valve that has been opened is releasing what seems to be currents of emotions. There is a fear of bleeding out. The desire to shut down is strong.
— ALBB

Step 1 I suppose is finding the Valentine. This person you could be looking at for years and years, or days and days, and all of a sudden, a valve is switched, and the feelings are gushing out. If you never wrote a Valentine to anyone before, you may find yourself writing a Valentine card 5 times over - all with different themes - because the feelings won’t stop. This is for a consensual communication, where you both are on the same page.

Not having found a Valentine since 8th grade, and before that, 1st grade, to find one after decades of life could result in paragraphs and paragraphs of feelings. But why?

The Coats - Where Is Your Coat?

What inspired this column was the ongoing coat issue in my house with my two older children. They either won’t wear them, or they want to wear one, but can’t find the perfect one. This, on the Friday that is starting the arctic winter blast where the temperature will dip to the single digits.

My children both walk to school. My one child looked sad the other day leaving, and I asked them why. They said: “Because it’s so cold - I don’t like walking in the cold. But you can’t drive me because of the other younger children.” Understood. However. This child goes out the door by choice in a sweatshirt, sweatpants, and upgraded slippers, with no hat, scarf or gloves. Despite being surrounded by such accessories.

During the winter holiday, one of the gift themes was finding the perfect coat. The perfect coat must be found for the winter. Through much research, the perfect coat was found! And gifted. But it is now rarely worn.

This results in this feeling of: “But…the perfect thing was found for you…I don’t understand. Why aren’t you wearing it if you are cold?” But they are young children with minds of their own, and have decided that sweatshirts are the wardrobe. And they aren’t alone. Some kids wear coats, and some are in the sweatshirt combo. I could force the child to wear the coat, but that’s not my style. I give up. It pains me to see them cold. And not bundle them up. But I have to let go (though I still get to bundle up my youngest child).

For my middle child, they have several coats (as does the previous child). On the coldest day, suddenly the puffiest, most softest coat was unsatisfactory. The child could not fathom wearing it because in their opinion, it made them look funny and the fabric bothered them. Understood. Respected. I found a rejected jacket from the older child and tossed it on top of the other rejected coats, offering it to the child.

As for my heart - I wasn’t mad or yelling or forcing them to wear the coat. I just gave up. I try to provide the love and comfort, and it’s not taken. They seemed to only care about that I searched for more coats that may or may not exist. So I continued on with my morning. Hoping for the best. Hoping they are happy walking to school in whatever they cobble together, and might change their mind later to bundle up. But if they don’t, I let it go. It’s their choice.

Back To The Gushing Valentine’s Feelings

So when you have all this love stored up, it may not have anywhere to go, if it’s not being absorbed. If you happen to have found a Valentine, they might get all your love. And it might be smothering for them. Who knows?! That’s the only way I can explain this gusher.

How do you get to gush mode?

Stripping One’s Self Of Defensiveness

There is one other factor playing into being able to feel the feelings. Aside from allowing yourself to pour love somewhere if it’s not being absorbed elsewhere. And that is: stripping one’s self of defensiveness.

Melting Defensiveness

If you’re normally a defensive person, like I am, the defensive blocker will make you unable to see clearly, or maybe even allow you to express how or what you are feeling. Defensiveness can happen for a number of reasons, including low self-esteem, and fear of rejection. I just learned about Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria (RSD). I am overjoyed with this discovery, because I don’t feel so alone in my feelings anymore. I’m not even at the tip of the iceberg with researching it, but it’s mentioned so that others can look into it too.

Because I was recognizing a defensiveness in me with someone I cared about, I was trying to melt it away. So that I wouldn’t say sarcastic responses, or lash out. I was asking myself: “Why did I say that? What am I really feeling? What words actually describe what I was feeling?” Sometimes it takes days to peel the onion to figure out this simple answer. Journaling is very key for this. And cardio exercise.

But once you do dig down, the answer is there! And it’s in a very vulnerable place. With the help of information shared by Dr. Jaimee Arnoff and Moraya Seeger DeGeare at BFF Therapy (find Moraya also at The Paired App), I’ve been learning that being and showing vulnerability is a good thing. And if shown to a person who responds gently to it, even better. And results in more vulnerability getting shown. Which feels very mushy and uncomfortable. And if you keep repeating, you will have very many words for that Valentine.

Self-Deprecation Is Really Harmful

Recognizing self-deprecation as part of your love-language or social norm is important. It needs to be edited out.

I am fluent in my languages that are not worldly related, like sarcasm and passive aggression. Another language I am fluent in is self-deprecation. I thought it was just in my family, but I’ve noticed it in women in general. Maybe mothers in particular. It’s seems to have become a requirement in a greeting. One mother can’t greet another mother without pointing out how there is snot on her child’s lip because their nose won’t stop running. Or about their hair being a mess. Or that they haven’t showered in days (shower! shower every day! the hot water feels so good! unless you have active eczema and then you need a steroid cream…so go see Witch Hazel in Beacon for preventative cream options before it gets to steroid level).

Self-deprecation results in 2 people being hurt: yourself, and a person you are dealing with. If you don’t value yourself, because you have trained yourself to put yourself down, then you’re not going to value the person across from you, who very likely may be a person who identifies female. This is how women sometimes cut down other women, or punish them in passive ways.

If you’re doing you, and you’re looking good and feeling good, do not cut that down. Enjoy yourself. If you did a great job at something, remember it. Do not cut it down. Embrace it. Celebrate it. Have caution of course, but let yourself shine. Dim yourself if you need to for a moment. But ditch the self-deprecation as a social norm.

What To Do With The Gushing Valentine

Not sure what to do with the recent gushing, as a person new to feeling feelings. The valve that has been opened is releasing what seems to be currents of emotions. There is a fear of bleeding out. The desire to shut down is strong. So. Will keep reading Secrets of Divine Love and will keep the faith and do the things the book suggests, like pray or meditate, and ground one’s feet while in those focused moments to find calm, melt, and open. And schedule a session with my therapist to discuss the feelings in order to better process them.

The Costellos Release Their 6th Album, "Hold On," And Share Their Love Story On ALBB's Podcast

Recorded live in the old Citizens Bank on Beacon's Main Street during the inaugural Beacon Bonfire festival, The Costellos sat with Brandon and Katie of the "Wait, What Is That?" podcast to discuss their latest album, "Hold On," which contains a love song heavy with longing written and sung by Lynn Johansen for her husband, Bobby Costello, inspired by 7 weeks of being apart for travel. During this episode, The Costellos previewed two tracks from their new album, and shared the songs' backstories. The Costellos are local and nation-wide performers, but also write love songs for wedding ceremonies of friends and family.

They shared their own love story with the pod. Listen to it here.

Spirit Of Beacon Day Opens Web Shop For T-Shirts & Hats As They Come Out Of Hibernation

The Spirit of Beacon Day Committee has been a little quiet since the whirlwind event production that was the Spirit of Beacon’s 45th Day last September 25th, 2022. Doing all they could to coordinate the day so that it wouldn’t crack, the Committee immediately went back to their jobs in teaching, designing, grocery storing, coaching, writing, and everything else free spirits do to pay the bills in Beacon and beyond.

With Shipping and Free Pickup now in place, the Spirit of Beacon Committee has opened their web shop for online orders of the t-shirts and hats - while supplies last! Free Pickup is an option for locals. In true Beacon fashion for a new business or enterprise, the Open Hours for pickup are selective and read like an Onion article: “Hours for pickup are varied and not consistent. Generally range from 12-2pm on the weekday, and sometimes on the weekend. For Free Pickup, please email spiritofbeacon@gmail.com after you order to see when Katie (the Spirit of Beacon Committee President) is at the co-work desk to give you your order. Alternatively, she will email you. Or find your place of residence to put it in your mailbox and disappear.”

The logo was designed by Kim Dei Dolori, and t-shirts designed by Allie Bopp. Design direction for all from Katie James, Inc. The hats were produced by Joker Ink, and the shirts produced by Remark Printing.

Will the t-shirts be a new color this year? Who knows! Only you can get the original design now. And sport that hat. Click here to shop now.

Are You Still In Hibernation? Enjoy That Hibernation...And Eat And Shop This... | Retail Therapy Guide 1/27/2023

Dear Beaconites:

THE RESTAURANTS DEPEND ON YOU.

If any of you complain that Beacon has become a "bedroom community" where only tourists keep it alive, ALBB can tell you right. now. that YOU have the power to sustain us throughout the week. But you might not be coming out!

Silly. Lots of you complain - or give the reason - "Oh, well, I don't come out mid-week because everyone is closed! I can't remember what day they are open!" True, Dear Reader. Usually Tuesdays are the worst days in Beacon for places to be closed.

But. Places like Homespun and MOD and Ziatun and Max's on Main and Hudson Valley Food Hall have been trying their best to stay open 7 days for you, and for that, they must be rewarded. By You. You really need to go to them on a Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday. Their sales need to go up on those days! The weekends are flooded, yes, but the restaurants and boutiques cannot survive alone on that. They need you! You need them!

PRO TIP: Order ahead. If you are working in an office in Beacon, and you say: "But ALBB, I only get a few moments for my lunch. I take a brisk walk down Main Street, and then I'm back in my building!"

ALBB can tell you: "Order ahead, silly! Duck in on that fast walk and pick up!"

PS: This newsletter is late because, well, ALBB got cats (3) from Beans Cat Cafe this week, and we published the breaking news story that the City of Beacon has finally released the name of the man who died in the woods (the rock-bed stream, it is now confirmed) along Teller Avenue. Read it here.

Scroll down, and form your menu and shopping plan.

Are you a restaurant who is not on the menu?
You can change that right now by advertising.

Are you a patron of a restaurant or boutique, and love ALBB, and want to see your favorite shop advertise? Tell them! They need your encouragement. We can only continue publishing with the financial support of readers and businesses. Thank you!

ALBB is small but mighty, and people love us.  And we love them. xoxoxoxo

City of Beacon Identifies Walter Miranda As The Man Who Died In The Woods Along Teller Avenue - No Foul Play Suspected So Far

On Thursday, January 26, 2023, the City of Beacon has released the name of the man who died on New Years day in the woods in a stream that runs along side Teller Avenue. It has been 26 days since the man’s name has been publicly released, yet some locals did know who the man was. While there was speculation for the cause of death, it surprised some that identification was not confirmed. Beacon’s City Administrator Chris White emailed the press release to ALBB (often we are with our young kids or dog/cat pets or at the dentist, so emails are appreciated).

According to a press release written by the City of Beacon’s Chief of Police Sands E. Frost - one of the most comprehensive press releases written to date - the man who passed away was Walter Miranda, age 58 who resided at 916 Wolcott Avenue, which is a multi-unit apartment house located across the street from the house that was torched two days later by someone else, owned by the same landlord. The incidents have never been connected.

The stream that runs under Teller Avenue, near the area where the City of Beacon Police were called to respond to the suspected deceased body, who was identified as Walter Miranda, age 58.

According Chief Frost, no foul play was suspected after a dual-investigation by the City of Beacon Police and the Dutchess County Medical Examiner’s Office. Chief Frost stated: “Everything regarding the joint investigation is pointing to Mr. Miranda's death being related to a fall causing a head injury.” The stream that Walter was found in was a shallow, rock-bed stream. Exposed rocks were in several areas. If one were to cross over the barricade near the sidewalk on Teller Avenue (across from Ballet Arts), and fall into the stream, with one’s head hitting the rocks, that would be hard fall.

According to locals who knew Walter, he was a skilled carpenter who passed into Beacon. He had friends on the street and beyond. He worked from job to job doing carpentry work during the seasons.

Chief Sands Frost’s press release has been re-published in full below:

On January 1, 2023 at approximately 11:46am, the City of Beacon Police Department received a call regarding a person believed to be deceased in a stream located in a wooded area just off Teller Ave. near Henry St. This was called in by a subject who was with his family. The City of Beacon Police Department responded, along with the City of Beacon Fire Department, Beacon Volunteer Ambulance Corps and Ambulnz.

EMS workers advised the subject was indeed deceased and the Dutchess County Medical Examiner's Office was contacted and they responded. A joint investigation into the death was started immediately by the City of Beacon Police Department and the Dutchess County Medical Examiner's Office.

The deceased person was identified as Walter Miranda. He is a 58-year-old male who resided at 916 Wolcott Avenue in the City of Beacon.

An autopsy was conducted on Mr. Miranda on January 3, 2023 by the Dutchess County Medical Examiner's Office. The City of Beacon Detective Bureau spent many days examining security footage from area cameras and interviewing associates and family members of the deceased. Important information was gathered regarding social interactions, habits, any chemical dependencies, etc.

Although the Dutchess County Medical Examiner's Office has not finalized its report yet due to awaiting toxicology results, everything regarding the joint investigation is pointing to Mr. Miranda's death being related to a fall causing a head injury. There are no other signs of a struggle or any other injuries indicating an assault.

I know community members get frustrated when something like this occurs in the area and not much information is available right away. We owe it to the victim and to the victim's family and friends to be as thorough as possible investigating any death that may seem suspicious. This process can take quite a while to complete. Our heart goes out to Walter's family and friends. We would also like to thank everyone who cooperated with us in the investigation.

Sands E. Frost
Chief of Police

Beacon's City Administrator Won't Release Identity Of Deceased Man Found Near Teller Ave. - This Time Citing County Medical Examiner Investigation

On January 1, 2023, at 12pm, the Beacon Police responded to a deceased body found in the woods near Teller Avenue. This was according to people who saw the response and posted to their social media, as well as the Press Release issued by the Beacon Police. In the Press Release, the police did not state how they knew about the deceased body, stating only: “On 1/1/2023 at approximately 12pm, the City of Beacon Police responded to the wooded area off of Teller Avenue for a deceased male subject who was in his 50's.” It is unknown if they were called by a person who saw the body, or how they knew about the body.

The City cannot release investigations. Similar, with the murders.
— Beacon's City Administrator Chris White

During tonight’s public City Council Meeting, Beacon’s City Administrator, with the Mayor’s prodding, updated the public regarding the deceased male who was in his 50s, according to the Press Release.

City Administrator Chris stated: “Regarding the deceased individual found in the woods: the City has not released details on that because we are waiting on reports from County Medical Examiner. I understand that people want to know right away what happened. The City cannot release investigations. Similar, with the murders.” He indicated that police have been working on them, and that if the City gets to a point when an announcement can be made, that they will.

Some of the murders City Administrator Chris is referring to is the shooting in the parking lot of Forrestal Heights: “Resident’s Brother Was Shot & Killed At Forrestal Heights Beacon Housing Authority”, as well as at least one murder at Tompkins Terrace.

There is the 2022 Christmas murder of Rene “Scout” Vivo on or near S. Brett Street and Main Street while he was walking home. While the Beacon Police did not release his name immediately, A Little Beacon Blog learned from several sources that it was him. While the City of Beacon declined to share the name of the recent deceased on Teller Avenue, Scout’s family thanked A Little Beacon Blog for publishing his name, and continued to share about his local funeral arrangements at Libby’s Funeral Home.

For this death near Teller Avenue - the cause of which remains unknown but speculated by those familiar with the deceased - the Beacon Police continue to not release his name, leading to wild speculation by the local public and now beyond Beacon by people simply making things up.

A Little Beacon Blog was very familiar with Scout. Not so with this individual, so cannot confirm in the same manner without family members or close friends coming forward.

During tonight’s City Council Meeting, the Council voted in favor of an investment in cameras that can read information about vehicles leaving and coming into Beacon, for a two year agreement, stating that so far, the City has relied on cameras from the Bridge Authority to seek such information. Councilperson Molly Rhodes confirmed with the City Administrator that the technology does not include facial recognition. It is not clear if this would help identify someone on foot, who may or may not leave the City of Beacon after an incident. Except for perhaps on a public bus. Or through the woods.

“Tara” Opens In Hudson Valley Food Hall - Former Employee , Trina, Takes Over & Reimagines

One of the most positive people in all of Beacon is Trina.

I loved the people around me and loved the guest compliments and reviews about the food which I was preparing. It boosted up my confidence again that I can do it!!!”
— Trina Mazumder

If you don’t know Trina Mazumder yet, she was an employee of Hudson Valley Shawarma, a food stall located at the front of Hudson Valley Food Hall, which is next door to Subway. Trina is also a henna artist. She also burns intricate designs into wood. Some of you were lucky enough to have her paint onto your hands at A Little Beacon Blog’s table at Spirit of Beacon Day 2022.

Map of Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and India.

Trina is from Bangladesh. She is an accomplished and credited foodie with Big Dreams. Through the course of events that is small business ownership, Trina purchased Hudson Valley Shawarma with the support of her husband, Buddika Amila Pg who owns the restaurant Lotus Deluxe in Sri Lanka, and her family. She reimagined what she could serve at her own new restaurant: Tara.

“Back home, I completed my Hotel Management Degree and came to the United States as an Intern Chef. It was my dream to open my own restaurant one day. Additionally, my husband used to work in hotel food and beverage service, and he has a restaurant back home in Sri Lanka. So when I started the job in Beacon (at the former Hudson Valley Shawarma), I loved the people around me and loved the guest compliments and reviews about the food which I was preparing. It boosted up my confidence again that I can do it!!!”

Trina shared the idea with her parents and husband. “They inspired me more, and I believe that yes, we are going to do it!!”

The Chicken Samosa at Tara, prepared in Bangladeshi style with a crispy outside.

The food on the menu is a fusion cousin of Bangladeshi, Indian, Sri Lankan and Middle Eastern food. Look for options like Chicken Samosa (Bangladeshi), Moglai Paratha (Indian), Watalappan (Sri Lanka) and Falafel (Middle Eastern).

The name Tara is a combination of Trina and her husband’s name (Buddika Amila Pg…he goes by Amila). Tara also means “star” in Bangladeshi Indian.

Fitting, as you will feel like a star each time you go into the Hudson Valley Food Hall. The vendors are pals and work together. Each trying to make the magic happen.

On a Saturday night in January, the Hudson Valley Food Hall was hopping.

Beaconites should take special note: if you want to love your town, you will need to go to these restaurants in the middle of the week. If you are going to complain that Beacon is becoming a bedroom community, ALBB is going to tell you that it is your fault. For not coming out for Bangladeshi chicken samosa on a Monday or Wednesday for lunch or dinner.

Are you kidding!?!

Trina is amazing, and so are you. Warm your blood with her food any day of the week. She is open all days except Tuesdays. Because such is Beacon. :)

There is a bar in the back - The Roosevelt Bar. Plus a patio on the side. Plus they are dog-friendly. You have everything you need. Done. See you there!

New Art Gallery Opens In Beacon "Super Secret Projects" Through The Hallway Of Hyperbole - Open 7 Days

A new art gallery called Super Secret Projects has opened down the hallway behind the boutique Hyperbole at 484 Main Street on the east end of Main Street near the mountain. Says Carolyn Baccaro, co-owner of the space: “We did a small renovation, and now you can walk right through the shop. We're also open 11am-6pm daily, so this is a full-time art gallery in Beacon, yay!!”

The creator of Super Secret Projects, Diana Vidal, likens the space to a speakeasy since one accesses it by walking through the boutique and down a hallway to get to the gallery, she told the Highlands Current. The co-owners of Hyperbole, Carolyn Baccaro and Andrea Podab are known for their collaboration with business and artistic projects, which have involved a pop-up shop at A Little Beacon Blog’s former space before they opened their own shops Artifact Beacon and Wares (which merged into Hyperbole), and a partnership with Beacon Mercantile who later opened a storefront on Main Street until she needed to move out to help a family member with their health.

About “Duality”

The 100% artist-run and curated space will host a public reception for their first group show, “Duality,” on Saturday, January 14th, from 7pm to 10pm at 484 Main Street. The exhibition, which runs through February 4th, will feature the work of local artists Alyssa Follansbee, Darya Golubina, Allegra Jordan, Yunmee Kyong, Elin Lundman, Evan Samuelson, and Diana Vidal.

According to the press release: “Conventionally, duality is defined as an instance of opposition or contrast between two aspects of something. Within this exhibition, we will endeavor to creatively explore the multitude of ways that the conceptual ideas of duality identify themselves within our existential outlook, history, and approach to the world. Like two sides of a coin, or interchangeable roles, a dichotomy of reality exists within us all. The work shown here is our reconciliation.”

About Super Secret Projects

Super Secret Projects is an artist-run initiative created to foster community and facilitate opportunities for emerging and mid-career artists to collaborate, experiment, and share their work. Visitors can peruse fresh and exciting local art 7 days a week from 11am to 6pm with new exhibits every month.

Follow @HyperboleNY and @SuperSecretProjects on Instagram for more details.

To apply for membership, apply to the Open Call for artists, or sign up for a workshop course, visit www.SuperSecretProjects.com.

Things To Do In Beacon | Retail Therapy Guide 1/13/2023

For this Friday the 13th, we're bringing it back to the message that the local spiritual healer Raven and the Wolf encouraged to her readers some time ago. She circulated the history that Friday the 13th was to celebrate the female energy. You can read more about how other healers educated about it here at Vice: “Before patriarchal times, Friday the 13th was considered the day of the Goddess. It was considered a day to worship the Divine Feminine that lives in us all and to honor the cycles of creation and death and rebirth.” A female typically has 13 cycles per year.

In case you were having a slumping Friday, fast forward you energy to Monday, which is Martin Luther King Day, and for Beaconites, this means you have the opportunity to celebrate it with the Southern Dutchess Coalition at the Springfield Baptist Church. The 1-block radius parade is scheduled to kick off in the morning, followed by a day of programming.

And finally, to warm up your gray day, do stop into the Hudson Valley Food Hall because there are a lot of options for you to warm your soul, like Miz Hattie's irreplaceable Mac 'n' Cheese served in a pan, and the Quesadilla at Dulce Cielo MX, who just got her new hand-painted sign from Katie James, Inc.!

A Deceased Male Found in the Woods Near Teller Avenue - Name Not Released

According to people in the area who posted on social media the day it happened when the City of Beacon Police began knocking on doors to learn more information, a deceased person was found near Teller Avenue on New Year’s Day at 12pm. At the end of the day, the Beacon Police issued a Press Release about the person: “On 1/1/2023 at approximately 12pm, the City of Beacon Police responded to the wooded area off of Teller Avenue for a deceased male subject who was in his 50's. The deceased was transported to Dutchess County Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy. At this time, the investigation is going and no further information will be released pending notification to family members. if anyone has any pertinent information, they are asked to contact the Detective Division.” The press release was submitted by Detective Sergeant Jason Johnson #315.

Shown in the photos above are a ledge on Teller Avenue next to the sidewalk above the rock-bedded stream that runs through. Locals were saying that the deceased was found near “the creek” which usually implies Fishkill Creek, which is a much larger body of water on that side of town.

This was closer to the street, where there are several exposed rocks on the ground in the stream. A more accurate description may be: “the stream behind the Veterans Memorial Building, which is across from Kennedy Fried Chicken and the old hardware store, and is also across from the Yankee Clipper Diner and Ballet Arts.”

No other Press Releases have been issued, and as of this publishing of this article on January 9, 2023, the name of the deceased has not yet been released. A Little Beacon Blog emailed the Beacon Chief Of Police Sands Frost and City Administrator Chris White to confirm the name, but have not received a response yet.

The Press Release gave no indication of how the person died, but people familiar with the situation say that he may have fallen from a higher point near the sidewalk onto the rocky bed of the stream that runs under Teller Avenue, hence the small bridge with barricade that exists there.

Locally, people in the community have been upset that more information has not been released, and are getting familiar feelings to other deaths that have occurred in the City, including the murder of Rene Vivo “Scout,” a known walker of the streets of Beacon who held different jobs. His death remains unsolved.

Days after this loss of life occurred, the boarding house at 925 Wolcott Avenue was set fire by a former male tenant who had been scheduled to attend an eviction hearing from that property. People in the community began demanding to know more information about man whose body was found in the woods days prior, even though the events may be unrelated. People did this via social media, and by emailing the media like A Little Beacon Blog with their concern.

It is not confirmed if the incidents are related in any way, or if the men knew each other in life.

People are encouraged to submit tips to the Detective Division of the City of Beacon Police. People can also submit tips to ALBB.

Local Beaconite, Tyler S.J. Brzozowski, Recognized By The Public, Passed Away November 2022

There are many people on the streets of Beacon that locals are familiar with. Could be a person who seems to always be on the same grocery store schedule with you, or a person walking on the sidewalk at different times. Tyler Scott John (S.J.) Brzozowski was such person for many, though those familiar with him may never have known his name.

Tyler could be seen often sitting outside of Beacon Pantry or near the Veterans Memorial Building on Main Street. Sometimes he sat on Wolcott Avenue near the boarding house formerly known as “The Guest House.”

Always friendly and usually quiet, Tyler passed away at home on November 19, 2022 at the age of 38, according to his obituary published in the Poughkeepsie Journal. He was born in Poughkeepsie, NY on February 14, 1984. “Tyler was a graduate from Arlington High School. He enjoyed playing ice hockey and roller hockey. He was an avid fan of the New York Rangers, who also enjoyed cooking and art. He is survived by his mother, Barbara (Ruppenstein) Brzozowski of Poughquag; his brothers, James Brzozowski and his wife Erin of Union Vale, Erik Brzozowski of Camano Island, WA, and Craig Brzozowski and his wife Christin of Union Vale; his nieces and nephews, Paul, Asher, Lucian, Madilyn, and Blake; his aunt, Flo Brzozowski; and many cousins and friends. Tyler was predeceased by his father, Richard E. Brzozowski.”

Tyler’s funeral was at McHoul Funeral Home, Inc. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Kateri Church. He was buried at Clove Cemetery.

The obituary states that donations may be made in memory of Tyler to Mental Health America of Dutchess County.

Eviction Assistence For Beaconites From Legal Services Of The Hudson Valley

Last year, as a result of public outcry at rising rents and evictions in Beacon, the City of Beacon entered into an agreement with Legal Services of the Hudson Valley in order to in provide increased access to assistance for Beacon tenants facing eviction.

Legal Services of the Hudson Valley encourage all to not self-evict. Meaning, if a landlord tells the tenant to leave, the tenant may have rights that they are not aware of. There are times when some people opt not to pursue outside help when faced with a landlord telling them they need to leave, preferring instead to deal with matters on their own.

A phone call to Legal Services of the Hudson Valley would be worth it, just to see what happens and what strategies are available. Call the paralegal, Steven Mihalik at 845-253-6953 to inquire.
